Tom Petty’s Daughter Responds to Cause of Death Report

Following the official statement from Tom Petty’s family revealing that his death last October was the result of an accidental overdose of pain medication, Petty’s daughter AnnaKim has reached out to fans to stress that, in her eyes, her father was not addicted to opioids.

As previously reported, Petty’s family said he’d been prescribed “various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches” prior to his death, at least in part to help him battle through a hip fracture during his 40th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers. Adding that they recognized the news “may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis” and expressing hope that “in some way this report can save lives,” the family’s statement shed painful new light on Petty’s final days.

It was not, however, intended to suggest that Petty had lapsed into addiction before his death. As his daughter AnnaKim wrote in an Instagram post days later, Petty wasn’t using his meds recreationally — he was simply doing his best to cope with a crippling injury that was only getting worse, all in order to live up to his touring commitments.

“His recent death is tragic, yet he died from doing what he loved and what will continue to keep his spirit alive,” reads the post in part. “Touring with a broken hip because he would have it no other way. He loved performing. There are no hypothetical questions I love my dad and feel he is an immortal badass. The amount of pain his hip caused was beyond a normal surgery.”

In 1977 – Stevie Wonder went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘I Wish’, his 5th US No.1, it made No.5 in the UK.

In 1969 – The Beatles moved from Twickenham Film Studios to Apple studios in London to start recording the “Get Back” LP. Billy Preston was brought into the sessions (John, Paul, and George knew Preston from 1962, when he was a member of Little Richard’s backing group). The Beatles were determined to record the album “live”, flaws and all.

And in 1964 – The Yardbirds featuring Eric Clapton appeared at The Cavern Club, Liverpool, England.

Offbeat News: Tide Pods, Time Travelers, & More

The “Tide Pod Challenge” is sweeping the Internet and leading to some scary health problems for teens partaking in this craze. During this time of crisis, restaurants are capitalizing on situation by creating Tide Pod inspired food and drinks. In looks only, of course.

A donut shop in Missouri is making Tide Pod donuts and have shared their creation on Facebook. A bar in Brooklyn is serving up Tide Pod shots by adding blue and red colors to their booze.

Others, who have seemingly nothing else important to be doing, have Photoshopped images of Tide Pod limited edition Oreos and Tide Pods with Lays Potato Chips.

The power of social media is not a force to be reckoned with. After a Facebook event was set up by Alison Cyr and Valerie Sanborn of Portland, Maine…dozens congregated dressed up as T.Rex.

The event required participants to show up at Portland’s Monument Square and “dance around” and they did. Sanborn says she got the idea for the event after she bought the costume for herself for only $50. She bought one for her brother, too, ad they did a mock shoot at Portland City Hall claiming the two T. Rexes had eloped.

Word spread of the even like a wild fire and on Saturday at 3pm, dozens of people dressed as the dinosaur danced are Monument Square like no body’s business!

A bizarre new video has surface of a man claiming to be a time traveler who has seen the year 6000. He says he’s got the secret technologies being used and claim human brains will be uploaded onto a computer so they can live forever.

In a video, which sees the man’s face is blurred and voice is distorted, he claims to have been a part of a secret program in the 1990’s that sent people forward in time. He even took a “distorted photo” of an unnamed city, which he claims “became distorted” from the travel back to present time (convenient).

At one point, our traveler gets choked up about having to leave a close friend behind in the future – he also says he knows people won’t believe his story and he doesn’t blame them. It’s not his “intention to deceive,” but claims we will have technology to time travel by 2028. Lay off the drugs dude… You can check out the video on the Bob’s Morning Brew facebook page.

Philadelphia “Crisco cops” greased light poles throughout the city before yesterday’s NFC Championship. They were hoping to prevent Philly’s faithful fans from climbing them by making them slippery. The fans are known to get pretty wild and the city took preventive measures so drunk fans couldn’t get injured.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

A drunk driver in Maine was also accused of punching himself in the face three times to avoid a sobriety test. Brian Fogg was found in his car, stuck in a ditch, and police tried to test for his blood-alcohol level. Fogg ended up punching himself in the face, causing him to bleed, but police later charged him for operating under the influence anyway. After getting treatment for his injuries, Fogg was charged with falsifying physical evidence with the blows, and criminal mischief. He’s since been released on bail.
Don’t mess with a man and his cheesecake. Police in Moundville were called to a residence where two men – brothers – were allegedly fighting over the size of a cheesecake slice and it grew violent. “Fun” began when the older unnamed brother supposedly punched his younger brother in the face and busted his lip because his slice wasn’t big enough. The younger called the cops to the scene after feeling threatened by his brother – and when they arrived, The oldest brother, still holding the knife even asked police “if the slice looked big enough for a grown man.” No word on the flavor of cheesecake at issue.
Police in Bristol, England have arrested a man scamming people out of money by claiming his wife is in labor. The man was spotted approaching businesses and homes for money for a taxi, after he told them his wife’s water broke and they needed to get to a hospital. The arrest was made after a homeowner called the police after realizing he had approached other homes. Next time, try showing up with a pregnant lady. It may be more convincing.

Bussey Man Charged with Sexual Abuse, Possession

The following is a news release sent to KMZN Radio from the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office:

On Friday, Jan. 19, at approximately 8:00 AM, members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 1000 block of 300th Street, in rural Mahaska County, regarding an assault.

As a result of the investigation into this matter, Sheriff’s Officials arrested 57-year-old Douglas Wade Pettyjohn of 507 3rd Street, Bussey, Iowa. Pettyjohn was charged with 1 count of Sexual Abuse in the 3rd Degree (a class C felony) and 1 count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (a simple misdemeanor).

Pettyjohn was taken to the Mahaska County Jail where he was incarcerated. He will make his initial appearance in the Mahaska County District Court on Jan. 20, 2018. The victim of his assault was an adult female.

** A criminal charge is merely an accusation and all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

This day in Rock History: In 2000 – tourism chiefs in Liverpool were banned from putting up motorway signs saying ‘Liverpool, the Birthplace Of The Beatles’, because the Highways Agency thought the signs would distract motorists.

Speaking of The Beatles, in 1971, The Beatles White Album was played in the courtroom at the Sharon Tate murder trial to find out if any songs could have influenced Charles Manson and his followers to commit murder.

In 1998 – Carl Perkins, the rockabilly pioneer whose song “Blue Suede Shoes” and lightning-quick guitar-playing influenced Elvis Presley, the Beatles and a slew of other performers, dies at the age of 65, from complications following a recent series of strokes.

And in 1949 – Singer Robert Palmer is born in Batley, England.

Joe Perry Assembles ‘All-Star’ Band

Joe Perry is taking the stage in support of his new solo album — and he’s rounded up a bunch of his famous friends.

As previously reported, Perry is prepping Sweetzerland Manifesto, his first non-holiday solo studio effort in nearly a decade. Due Jan. 19, the new album finds the Aerosmith co-founder working with an array of well-known collaborators that includes Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander, Terry Reid and David “Buster Poindexter” Johansen.

Perry was joined by Zander — as well as Extreme singer Gary Cherone and Stone Temple Pilots members Dean and Robert DeLeo — for his set at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 10. Dubbed “The Sound of Rock,” Perry’s performance spanned 17 songs, touching on covers and new material, as well as Aerosmith classics.

All four of those special guests will be on hand at Perry’s pre-release show for Sweetzerland Manifesto at the Roxy in Los Angeles on Jan. 16, along with Johansen and Reid. Billed as a “Joe Perry and Friends” performance, the sold-out date could be just the start of Perry’s concert calendar this year — as he told Best Classic Bands recently, he expects to be back on the road with Aerosmith later in 2018, launching the next leg of a tour he expects to last into 2020.
In the meantime, Perry has plenty of his own projects to keep him busy, including a new boom box he’s releasing in conjunction with Monster. Promising to “deliver the sound of classic rock the way it was intended,” the new “Monster Blaster Classic Rock Edition” actually comes with a classic rock setting — reportedly tuned by Perry himself — that “pumps up the bass” while still accentuating mid- and high-range frequencies in order to deliver “the full emotional impact of the music.”

Fans can expect to see the new unit in stores this summer, with the first 200 set to be personally autographed by the guitarist himself. “The Monster Blaster is the last boom box you will ever need,” enthuses Perry in a press release. “It’s an instant party that will Rock Your World!”

‘The Police’ Hold First Rehearsal Ever

This day in Rock History:

In 1998 – Tonight at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, the Mamas & the Papas, Santana, Lloyd Price, Gene Vincent, Allen Toussaint and Jelly Roll Morton.

In 1993 – Cream reform at tonight’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Los Angeles. Other inductees are Creedence Clearwater Revival – who don’t reform at all – the Doors – who can’t reform – Van Morrison, Sly & the Family Stone, Frankie Lymon, Dinah Washington and Etta James. The reclusive Sly Stone appears at the ceremony rocking the Prince look, but says nothing. He’s later found to be living in sheltered housing in Los Angeles.

And in 1977 – The Police had their first rehearsal, held at drummer’s Stewart Copeland’s London flat, with Henri Padovani on guitar.

Before they were “The Police”, they were a band called “Strontium 90”.

Offbeat News: Soda Pop Shop & Japanese Astronauts

Veronica Spekis, a retail clerk at the Soda Pop Shop in Maryland, got a pair of scratch-off lottery tickets from a regular customer as a year end “tip”. When she rubbed the first $5 Holiday Riches ticket, she discovered she’d won the $50,000 top prize.

Spekis, who was totally stunned by the holiday miracle, says she plans to use her winnings to help reach her goal of buying a house.

Norishige Kanai, a Japanese astronaut, apologized while on his way to the International Space Station for stating he had grown 3.5-inches while in space and expressing concern about whether he’d be safe on his return to Earth.

“My height’s been measured here in space and somehow, somehow, I’ve grown 9 cm! In only three weeks I’ve really shot up, something I haven’t seen since high school,” he tweeted. “This makes me a little worried that I might not be able to fit in the Soyuz seats for our return.”

When his tweet caused a media blitz, he apologized and said he’d measured himself after his captain raised questions about the apparent growth. Turns out, he’d stretched only 2 cm from his Earth-bound height.

A little known fact is, many astronauts “grow” one space missions, because their spines extend in the absence of gravity. They only grow a few inches usually, and it all disappears once they return home.

“This mis-measurement appears to have become a big deal, so I must apologize for this terrible fake news”, Kanai tweeted in a correction. “It appears I can fit on the Soyuz, so I’m relieved”.

Ikea is using some creative marketing to feel cribs. The Swedish furniture giant has asked women who think they may have a bun in the oven to urinate on its latest print ad to find out for sure. If the test is positive, discounts on baby furniture await!

Here’s how it works. The ad is running in Swedish magazine “Amelia” and has a picture of a baby crib with the text, “Peeing on this ad may change your life” at the top of the page. If the test is positive, a discount code is revealed for the advertised crib.

“This ad is also a pregnancy test. Pee on the marked area and wait a moment,” the print says. “If you are expecting, you will get a surprise right here in the ad.”

The agency behind the campaign said there were even “technical advancements made” while crafting the pregnancy test technology to work from a magazine page. Apparently, those advancements may have the potential to improve medical diagnostics in the future.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

A hard rockin’ 50-year-old man was arrested for allegedly making off with a massive haul of KISS memorabilia. The owner of the collection called police when he discovered his precious collection of shirts, records, action figures and magazines from his favorite band had been snatched from his storage unit in San Angelo, Texas. Surveillance video of the heist led police to Michael W. Roehr, who was charged with burglary of a building after his home was searched. He was also charged with burglary of a habitation and possession of a controlled substance. Some of the collection was recovered and returned to its owner, which is a good thing because he’d been collecting KISS goods for over 40 years!

A man in Russia apparently needed a drink so bad that he rammed a tank into a shop window, climbed through the rubble and stole a bottle of wine. Apparently, the already-drunk man swiped the vehicle from a motorsport training ground nearby, and took it on a joy ride bound for more booze. He also crushed a Daewoo car parked nearby in the midst of his desperate robbery, which ended up with him in cuffs. The shop wasn’t licensed to sell alcohol that early in the morning, authorities noted.

A bunch of folks parked at Greater Rochester International Airport over the Christmas holiday came back to fewer car parts than when they left for holiday vacation. Harry Coates III just may be to blame. He was arrested in connection to jacking multiple car parts and taken into custody after deputies tracked him to his home in Rochester. Coates admitted to stealing Cadillac rims and a Ford F150 tailgate from the airport parking garage, but that’s about it. He was charged with two counts of fourth degree grand larceny, one count of second degree auto stripping,and one count of third degree criminal mischief.

This day in Rock History: In 1971 – The trial over Paul McCartney’s move to dissolve the Beatles partnership begins today in London’s High Court. Ringo testifies, “Paul behaved like a spoilt child.”

In 1956 – Elvis Presley starts his first recording session for RCA. The result includes “Heartbreak Hotel.”

In 1952 – Pat Benatar (Pat Andrzejewski) is born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her first six albums all go platinum, selling more than 1 million copies.

In 1945 – Roderick (Rod) Stewart is born in London. His biggest hit, “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright),” is No. 1 on Chart Toppers’s Hot 100 for eight weeks.

And finally, in 1948 – Donald Fagen of Steely Dan is born in Passaic, N.J. The pop/jazz group has three top 10 albums, including “Aja,” which goes to No. 3 on Chart Toppers’s pop chart.

“Go Rib or Go Home”

Maeli Aguilar-Alvarez fully believes in going big or going home. The 26-year-old was spotted by a cop leaving Rines Market IGA grocery store in Indiantown, Florida. What really caught top police officer’s eye? Aguilar-Alvarez pulled a full rack of ribs from his pants.

A further search yielded two packs of hamburger buns, nine pieces of fried chicken and some mashed potatoes, all of which Maeli stole. Probably not surprisingly, the hungry crook reportedly smelled of booze and was intoxicated while dealing with police.

Aguilar-Alvarez has been hit with a retail theft charge.

“Dead Asleep”

Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez gave morgue employees in Spain a real scare when all of sudden he started snoring. The problem? The 29-year-old had been declared dead by three different doctors.

The man was an inmate at a jail in the Asturias region and it was there a guard first discovered him – appearing to show no signs of life. More than three hours later, and only a few minutes before his autopsy, Jiménez started snoring in his body bag.

Workers helped him to his feet and now Jimenez is under observation at a nearby hospital. Doctors believe he was suffering from Catalepsy, a condition characterized by a very weak pulse and serious muscular rigidity.

OFFBEAT NEWS QUICKIES:

Remember the elderly couple caught with marijuana they claimed were Christmas presents? Well, they’ve been arrested yet again.
Jamie Lee Curtis has been arrested. No, not that Jamie Lee Curtis. This Pennsylvania man led cops on a chase in a stolen truck that he later crashed.
A young moose got stranded in the feet of snow that fell in Crouseville, Maine. Cue the nine good Samaritans who grabbed their shovels and rescued the animal.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

“Über Stupid”

New Orleans authorities arrested a couple on Saturday night after they attempted to rob an Uber driver. The victim reported a woman, whom he had met and given his number to after a prior Uber ride, after she invited him to come over and the following transpired: When he arrived, the woman was topless in an attempt to seduce the driver, while her boyfriend robbed him at knife point. When met with resistance, the boyfriend ran off, but was eventually located by police via search dogs and was subsequently bitten by one of the dogs after refusing to come out of hiding.

“Elderly Eluding”

Age is but a number for the 80-year-old Swiss man who has been arrested for masked bank robbery. It’s unclear how much money he stole, but a photo of the man was released showing him in the mask holding a blue plastic bag of money before fleeing on foot.

“Gun Safety for Criminals”

If you’re going to go into a life of crime, you really shouldn’t be trigger happy. A trio of men broke into an apartment when one accidentally shot himself. According to Fairfax County, Virginia police, the wounded robber had an unintentional, self-inflicted wound to the lower body. Police say the three robbers fled the scene but it’s not sure if they stole anything.
