In 1980 – Uriah Heep kicked off their 19 date 10th Anniversary UK tour at Birmingham’s Odeon, supported by Girlschool.

In 1963 – 17 year-old Neil Young performed his first professional date at a country club in Winnipeg.

And in 1952 – Rick James is born in Buffalo, N.Y. Among his R&B hits are “Give It To Me” and of course, “Super Freak.”

In 1987 – Paul Simon went back to No. 1 on the UK album chart with ‘Graceland’, the album stayed on the chart for 101 weeks.

In 1967 – The Beatles spent a second day at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, England to complete filming for the ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ promotional video. The film was shot in colour, for the benefit of the US market, since UK television was still broadcasting only in black and white. Taking time out from filming John Lennon bought a 1843 poster from an antiques shop in Surrey which provided him with most the lyrics for The Beatles song ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite’.

And in 1978 – Talking Heads made their UK TV debut on the ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’.

Offbeat News: Emotional Support Animals, Beer, & Stupid Criminals

OFFBEAT NEWS:

In case you missed it, “Live & Let Fly” reported earlier this week that an unnamed United Airlines traveler tried bringing her emotional support peacock on a flight out of Newark’s Liberty Airport. Her request was shot down – even though she had a second ticket for it, but the airline still denied the bird board because of concerns about passenger safety.

United says the “animal did not meet the guidelines for a number of reasons, including its weight and size.” But they also say this shouldn’t have been a shock as they told the customer that on three separate occasions (in advance) that her bird wasn’t gonna fly with them.

So what happened? The woman – now identified as New York artist Ventiko, says some “human friends” agreed to drive her and Dexter on the thousand-mile journey. And are we shocked to hear that Dexter has his own Instagram account? Of course not.

A Vietnamese airline is apologizing for an “improvised performance” by its flight attendants, news outlets have reported. The airline crew reportedly stripped down to bikinis and underwear to welcome home a national soccer team that didn’t even win their match. The airline has previously used attendants in bikinis to attract customers, but claims this wasn’t a marketing ploy. They were hit with a small fine and a slap on the wrist from Vietnam’s civil aviation agency.

The first thing to do when it snows is to throw salt on the roads, but some states are starting to think the salt is contaminating waterways. Their solution? Beet juice, and in some cases, BEER! Experts think that the sodium being added to the water from the roads are making fresh water lakes an rivers unsustainable for aquatic life. Not so sure if beet juice, molasses, beer, and for Wisconsin, cheese brine will resolve that issue…but it doesn’t tear up the bottom of your car, so yay!

STUPID CRIMINALS:

An Alabama man has been busted with a large amount of meth found inside a fake soda can. Thomas Wayne Wilemon was spotted driving his car at a gas station when police realized there was a warrant out for his arrest. They found a small bag of meth in Wileman’s pocket and a fake soda can with a false bottom containing 30 grams of meth, several needles, an assortment of pills, and digital scales. How big was this “soda can?”
An unnamed 20-year-old Seattle man was arrested after robbing a Pizza Hut delivery driver. He and another man allegedly called in an order under an alias to have the food delivered, but when the delivery girl got there, she was given the run around and eventually robbed of the pizza at gunpoint. She’s fine, but here’s the best part: Pizza Hut tracked down the culprit… because he used the same phone number to order pizza a few days prior. It STILL gets better! When cops arrived at his door they say they smelled marijuana, heard loud music and announced themselves. That’s when they they heard a voice inside saying, “Don’t answer.” Bad move. He was arrested on robbery and assault charges.
A nursing home is under investigation after a resident offered a staff member a THC-laced Oreo. The cookies were supposedly from Michigan and help “manage his pain.” He wouldn’t reveal who brought the cookies to him, but about 20 were seized and destroyed. Any arrests in the case will hinge on findings of the investigation, which will focus on the source of the cookies.

In 1982 – Bluesman Sam “Lightnin”’ Hopkins dies. Age 69. The Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac and the Cowboy Junkies have covered his songs.

In 1973 – after recently changing their name from Wicked Lester, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss made their first appearance as Kiss at the Popcorn Club in Queens, New York.

In 1969 – The Beatles, with Billy Preston on organ, perform four songs on a London on Saville Road rooftop for the film “Let It Be.” Billy wrote and performed the Rhodes solo on “Get Back”. The set is halted after 42 minutes because an accountant at the nearby Royal Bank of Scotland complains about the noise.

And in 1951 – Phil Collins (pictured) is born in London. He will start his artistic career as a child actor, including a role as the Artful Dodger in an English production of “Oliver”, and an appearance in the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” film. He is the drummer of Genesis, and following the departure of Peter Gabriel becomes lead singer as well.

Phil not only was the drummer for Genesis and on numerous albums for other artists, but also formed the jazz fusion group “Brand X”.

Offbeat News: Fallin’ Walnuts, A Russian Superbaby, & More

OFFBEAT NEWS:

A Frankfurt judge has made an unusual ruling after a woman sued her neighbor for close to $5,000 in damages to her car from fallen walnuts. According to the woman, walnuts and branches from the tree fell onto her vehicle due to strong winds in October 2013 “causing dents to the body, hood and roof.”

She then sued her neighbor to cover the cost of repairs. The defendant argued that the branches of the walnut tree extended into the woman’s property and he regularly cut back the branches.

The judge made probably the best court ruling to date, by stating walnut trees must shed their nuts as the autumnal occurrence is a “fact of nature” and must be tolerated. The woman also has to pay the cost of the court case.

A Russian mom must be in a lot of pain after delivering a nearly 14 pound baby. The mom of now five, reportedly delivered the super-size tot without any painkillers. The baby came out at 13 pounds, 14 ounce which is basically twice the size of an average baby.

According to the medical team the baby already has problems with hearing and other problems may occur in the future. The craziest thing is that this isn’t even the heaviest newborn. According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest newborn was delivered by Italian Carmelina Fedele in 1955 and weighed in at 22 pounds.

UK homeowner Carl Betson is certainly adding some curb appeal to his home with new decking, but what he hides underneath may shock future owners. Betson purchased a fake skeleton and placed it underneath the decking in hopes to creep out the next owners!

“This is going to be sooooo funny in around 30 years time when the next guy replaces the decking,” Betson jokes. He posted about his prank on Facebook where some of his friends wished they’d thought of it themselves and others not so much. One bubble burster thinks it will be “hilarious” when the taxpayers money is wasted on a forensic investigation.

Good news is the prank only cost Betson around $2.50. Bad news is that he’ll never see the joke to fruition. No bones about it, this prank would be legendary if he can pull it off! Though he may not know until his own after-life.

The Flat Earth International Conference took place in North Carolina recently and they’re “proving” that NASA is a fraud and all world governments are lying to us. One conference speaker, Rob Skiba believes that “the bigger picture many have come to believe is hiding god.”

STUPID CRIMINALS:

German police say two truck trailers with 44 tons of chocolate were stolen and that they’re stumped as to who did it. While one was recovered with the load intact, the other was found near the French border France with two thirds of the loot missing. And get this – it’s reported the chocolate was worth nearly a half million dollars. The investigation continues.

Primus, Mastodon Team Up for 2018 Tour

On the heels of 2016’s The Desaturating Seven, Primus have recently announced a two-month stint of a U.S. tour, joined on the road by heavy metal rockers Mastodon.

On May 6, they’ll kick things off at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colo., and end July 7 at Phoenix’s Comerica Theatre. Tickets for all shows go on sale to the general public this Friday, Feb. 1, with a pre-sale beginning tomorrow with the password “Goblins.” Check out all the dates below and get full ticketing details at Primus’ website.

The Desaturating Seven album was based on a book called The Rainbow Goblins by Ul Del Rico that Primus frontman Les Claypool supposedly used to read to his children. The plot centers on seven goblins who “pull the color out of the world.”

“The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately, and I thought, ‘This would make good fodder for a piece of music,'” Claypool said in an interview. “The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony and deceit vs. unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”

Last night during the Grammy’s, Mastodon took home the Best Metal Performance for “Sultan’s Curse.” The track, which the band cross-promoted with its very own own beer, appeared on Emperor of Sand.

Offbeat News: Nutella Nightmare, Pre-Destined Destiny, & More

“Nutella Nightmare”

Discounted Nutella has turned into a Black Friday nightmare in what’s being deemed Nutellageddon. The chocolate hazelnut spread was discounted by supermarkets across France yesterday and caused an uproar with shoppers.

“They are like animals,” one shopper said. “A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand,” the woman explained. All this for 70-percent-off Nutella.

The outrageous fights broke out in multiple stores across the country. One store limited the sale to three jars per customer. According to the NY Post, France is second to Germany as the world’s top consumers of Nutella. That explains so much of what has happened!

“New Year, New Bill”

A newly introduced bill in California will prevent waiters from handing out unsolicited straws with drinks. The bill would require waiters to only hand out straws if a customer drinking a beverage asks for one. If a waiter serves a drink with an unrequested straw, they could face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Democratic majority leader, Ian Calderon, who proposed the bill, wants to “create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on [their] landfills.” The law seems to be gaining approval.

The Los Angeles Times even got behind the movement and also pointed out “repetitive sucking may cause wrinkles.” California cities San Luis Obispo and Davis already passed straws-on-request laws last year. The actual number of straws being used is unclear, however its estimated that 500 million straws are used a day. Calderon may be on to something.

“Pre-Determined Destiny”

Daniel and Danielle met on Plenty of Fish just as many couples now-a-days do. What’s different about their story is that their lives are extremely parallel and it has less to do about their similar names and more to do with fate.

Turns out- the two were born on the same day, in the same hospital! That’s not all. Both of their nicknames are Dan. If you didn’t think they were destined to meet from birth, how about the fact they both joined the Plenty of Fish online dating service on the same day. The pair hit it off so well they ended up getting married. They even welcomed their first child, Daisy on their first wedding anniversary.

Their lives are just full of coincidence. The two say that they felt like they met before, but it could’ve just been as babies in the hospital. Both their previous relationships never really worked out before and now they know why. Daniel says “it must’ve been fate- she’s my best friend.”

“Make It Rain”

In case you missed it, it was raining dollar bills on an Illinois highway on Tuesday. It happened after a car carrying money and cash vouchers spun out of control and hit a truck with a flatbed trailer. The money went flying everywhere, but police cleaned up everything before anyone could get their hands on them. Everyone in the wreck is safe.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

A woman arrived home to find someone was watching the place while she was gone, but they weren’t expecting to be there when she got in. According to the woman, she walked in on another female rummaging through her purse. The suspect fled, but didn’t make it far and was arrested shortly after.
A supermarket clerk thought she was super sly after paying a lottery winner five dollars when he actually won $600. Turns out Winn- Dixie clerk Crystelle Yvette Baton wasn’t so slick as the lucky lottery winner was an undercover agent working for the Florida Lottery Commission’s security division. According to the Miami Herald, the Lottery Commission makes random visits to make sure the games are played properly. Sounds like it wasn’t Crystelle’s lucky day.

Offbeat News: A Cadillac, Couch Potatoes, & More

OFFBEAT NEWS:

A 1969 Cadillac De Ville was converted into the “World’s Fastest Mobile Hot Tub” according to Guinness. It has now been sold at an Arizona auction for $26,400. The “Carpool De Ville” can reach speeds of 160-miles-per-hour.

The car uses its v8 engine to heat the water in the passenger area to 102-degrees. It was even awarded Guinness World Record status earlier this month and became the most attention-grabbing vehicle to hit auction. There’s only one catch, the vehicle cannot be registered or driven on any public roads. Bummer!

Calling all couch potatoes! There is now a spot for you to go to so you don’t feel ostracized by the active people in your life. Unfortunately, its in Germany. Founded by German entrepreneur Torben Bertram, the Sofa Sports Association found it’s feet after Bertram got fed up with colleagues who kept pressuring him to join workout sessions during lunch.

The Sofa Sports Association lets like-minded lazy people participate in sofa sports like sitting, eating cups of chips without using hands, and yelling like Tarzan (no idea why on that one…sounds like work). Bertram says he founded the association because he just didn’t like the “constant pressure to improve himself.”

The club has been meeting for about a year at bars and clubs and now has 25 members including Bertram’s wife, who originally thought it was “nonsense.” The club is geared towards non-vegan, non-career-obsessed and the non-overachieving masses. That’s the spirit!

STUPID CRIMINALS:

Apparently, 344 arrests is not enough for one man who found himself back in court this week. Richard Powell has been arrested on a “spectrum of charges” throughout the years and landed himself back in court for violating a ban from Miami Beach. He was arrested there for yelling in the middle of the street, carrying a beer, oh and he had marijuana stuffed in his shoes.
Oliver Montgomery had one job, and that was to help clients get their social security payments. Instead, he allegedly stole them. In all, he’s accused of swiping $37,000. It gets better. He reportedly owed an ex-girlfriend money and she threatened to take him to court. He shot a selfie with the stolen money and told her to “show the judges that stack,” implying he had the money. She showed the feds the photo instead and he was later arrested.

Offbeat News: Bats, Asteroids, & Stupid Criminals

There’s no longer any excuses to not hit the gym because this 105-year-old man will put you to shame. Jack Reynolds is currently the world’s oldest person to ride a rollercoaster, has flown a vintage plane and scaled three skyscrapers – all SINCE he turned 100. How does he do it? Loving family, sure…but he also drinks whiskey. Every day.

His youngest daughter, Jane Goodwin, says he puts whiskey in his tea every morning and two shots of Grouse (another brand of whiskey) in a glass with lemonade at night “and swears by it.” Not surprisingly, he even suggests whiskey as the best medicine for a cold!

Reynolds who was born in 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, also holds the record for oldest person to do the Ice Bucket Challenge at 102-years-old. He apparently wasn’t even phased. And he says that’s all that whiskey keeping him warm.

Villagers in India were sadly mistaken when they started collecting pieces of what they thought was an asteroid…or something else extraterrestrial after it fell from the sky. Hopeful villagers even preserved pieces of the then unidentified object in their refrigerators.

Turns out, the mysterious formation turned out to be now-frozen poop that came from an airplane flying overhead. This is a pretty rare occasion as most airplane toilets are meant to be emptied after landing, but some “remnants” may end up in the overflow outlet and turn icy when the craft cruises to high altitudes.

The guess is that some broke off…and now, a bunch of people have some serious housecleaning to do.

In strange things to see at Walmart, bats are now taking up residency at the store in Alvin, Texas. And here’s where it gets really icky: the bats that were spotted flying around two weeks ago, have apparently multiplied.

Fortunately, they mainly hang out in the ceilings and rafters of the store away from customers. STILL! The good news for the public?

Management has called in a wildlife organization to help capture the critters. Several have been caught and released – and the area in which they’ve been entering has been sealed off.

Aussie trick-shot team How Ridiculous has broken their own personal Guinness World Record for greatest height from which a basketball is dropped. They traveled to Maletsunyane Falls in Lesotho to drop a basketball into a hoop 660-feet and ten inches below them! They were successful and broke their previous record of 593-feet from the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

During an argument with his girlfriend, Juwan Brown allegedly threw a piece of fried chicken at the woman, striking her face. But that’s not all – Brown upped the ante when he stepped on her foot. All that scored him a domestic violence charge – against his girl…though tossing good fried chicken is pretty criminal, too. He was booked into county jail, but later freed on a $5,000 bond.
A Tesla on auto pilot is not a get out of jail free card when you’re driving drunk. That’s what one California man found out after he reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel after a few too many cocktails. He failed to pass a sobriety test when police found him in his stalled vehicle on the Bay Bridge. His defense? His fancy Tesla was on auto pilot. According to officers, auto pilot doesn’t cut it as the Tesla requires human response at some point or it eventually stalls, which is what apparently happened in his case. He’s been arrested and charged on suspicion of DUI.
In an ironic twist, a North Carolina man who previously won a donut eating contest has been arrested after stealing from a Dunkin Donuts. Bradley Harrison is charged with felonies including breaking and entering and larceny. It was not clear if he helped himself to some donuts. But hey… wouldn’t you?
