Osky Man Charged With Attempted Murder

The following is a news release sent to KMZN on behalf of the Oskaloosa Police Department:

(Oskaloosa, Iowa)–On Friday Jan. 5, 2018 the Oskaloosa Police Department obtained an arrest warrant charging Deon Damon Freeman, age 26, of Oskaloosa, Iowa with attempted murder. The defendant was later located at his residence and taken into custody on this charge. The charge of attempted murder stems from an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported December 19, 2017 shooting that occurred at the intersection of Pella Avenue and Green Street in Oskaloosa. During the shooting the defendant advised police officers that he fired six rounds from his handgun into the back of another vehicle that was occupied by two individuals.

The defendant was taken to the Mahaska County Jail and released into their custody with a $100,000 cash only bond. Attempted Murder is a class “B” felony punishable by up to 25 years in a state penitentiary.

This investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.

Criminal charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

KISS Signs First Contract

On Jan. 8, 1974, the band KISS is signed to its first recording contract. Members manage to drum up some press by performing a “dress rehearsal” shortly after signing to Casablanca Records and honing their carnival-esque image. A reporter from Rolling Stone said, “The group plays very heavy, loud and ultimately monotonous rock in the Black Sabbath tradition. … A sure crowd-pleaser. The crowds of kiddies, that is.”

Osky Water Board Meets Today

The Oskaloosa Water Board of Trustees will meet today (Jan. 8) for a regular meeting at 4:00 PM. Routine agenda items are on the docket, such as approving the agenda, approving meeting minutes from December, and more. A customer forum will also be held, as well as discussion about an agreement for professional services with Garden & Associates for water system improvements on A Avenue West, Hwy 432, and North L Street.

Looking ahead, the board will discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2018-2019 budget, talk about wastewater operations, and will receive an update from the general manager. Before adjourning, the meeting will focus on updates from member(s) of the Board.

“Man’s Best Friend”

Think you and your dog are best friends? Well Tom Turcich and his pooch Savannah are also travel companions. Tom, who’s from New Jersey, was inspired to walk across all seven continents after a close friend died. While in Texas, he adopted Savannah.

“After spending nearly every minute of every day with her, she’s definitely my best bud,” Tom says. “She walks every mile with me and always has energy left over at the end of the day.”

Unfortunately, after more than 700 days on the road, Tom was sidelined by a bacterial infection. He’s now on antibiotics and has no plans to stop his “World Walk,” he’s just postponing it.

“The World Walk is still all I think about,” he wrote on Instagram. “It took me eight years from the idea’s conception to taking the journey’s first steps. So a few month illness is nothing more than a painful, unwanted detour.”

“Lost at Sea”

An English boy has been reunited with the sea-swept camera he lost four-months-ago on the North Sea. William Etherton lost his video camera while filming in Thornwick Bay on England’s east coast. It was carried off by a wave on September 1st and drifted for two months.

German resident Roland Spreer spotted the camera on Nov. 2 after it washed up on a small island off Germany’s western coast. Thanks to its waterproof casing, it still worked.

Spreer’s son posted footage from the day it washed away, in hopes of finding the camera’s original owner. Reports of the video attracted so much attention, Etherton’s father eventually found the post and the boy was finally handed back his well-traveled camera on Saturday.

“Terrorized by Turkeys”

A workplace hazard for mail carriers in Rocky River, Ohio? Wild turkeys. About 25 to 30 homes in one part of town haven’t been getting their mail delivered because of the birds…for three weeks.

“There’s a lot of bird feeders over there, so there’s a food source in that area,” Rocky River Mayor Pam Bobst explains. “It is an issue, so we’ve asked residents to cease putting out bird seed and bird food so we can see if they will go [elsewhere.]”

Some carriers have been pecked, but have not been hurt. Regardless, the unsafe conditions caused by the birds has forced some residents to go to the post office to get their mail.

A cat jumped into a woman’s car and started attacking her. Not bad enough? While she was trying to escape, she was run over by her own car.

“Stopped by Snow”

Mother Nature stopped Dustin Johnson from stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the Minot, North Dakota Hobby Lobby. The 22-year-old filled up a shopping cart with about $4,000 in products before walking out of the store. Unfortunately for him, his cart got stuck in the snow in the parking lot and tipped over. Johnson fled, but he left his wallet in the cart, which contained identification with his address. He is now facing a theft charge.

“Life of the Party”

If you want to meet the life of the party, head to Miramar Beach, Florida. An unidentified woman was arrested after she not only stole drinks from the Baytowne Wharf bar, but also refused to leave the bar’s stage. The staff asked her multiple times to leave, but instead she stopped her singing and dancing and simply sat and refused to leave. In the end, she was escorted out of the bar and charged with trespassing.

Pedestrian Struck by Patrol Car in Monroe

(MONROE, Iowa)– On Jan. 4, at approximately 6:38 PM, a Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a car/pedestrian accident at Casey’s Store, located at 201 E Ralph St. in Monroe, Iowa.

According to a news release sent by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Nick Aldrich was operating a patrol car in the east parking lot when he struck a person who was walking in the lot.

Monroe Fire and EMS were requested and the patient was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The Iowa State Patrol has been requested to investigate the accident. There were no other injuries or damage to vehicles reported at the time the news release was sent out to local media.

“It’s Raining Lizards”

Residents in South Florida are not only dealing with chilly temperatures but falling iguanas, too. That’s right, lizards are falling from the sky. Well, trees, technically.

Temperatures have fallen to 40-degrees in Miami and with that, the exotic green iguanas are becoming immobilized and falling from their perches on tree branches. Naturally, people have been posting photos of the strange phenomenon on social media.

Don’t worry, though. Wildlife officials say the cold animals may appear to be dead, but are often still alive…and just fine.

“The Hair Harborer”

Plenty of people collect things, but Ezzeya Daraghmeh has a particularly unusual hobby. The 82-year-old Palestinian woman has been collecting her own hair since she was 15.

“I like my hair and I hate to throw it away,” she explains. “Even when I comb my hair or wash it I keep the hair that falls off.”

Ezzeya has now collected enough strands of her own hair that she stuffed three pillows full of it. She uses the pillows as decoration in her West Bank home.

“A Late Start to a Long Commitment”

John Corby is sick of dealing with late brides. The English priest has decided that he’s giving brides a 10-minute grace period on their wedding day. If they’re any later in getting to Holy Cross Church in Bearsted or St Mary’s Church in Thurnham, he’s charging them $135.

Corby’s decision is less to make a quick buck and more for all the other people who work weddings, like the choir, organist, and bell ringers. “I wanted to show that I was taking my staff seriously because they weren’t doing it for the money,” Corby adds. “I thought this is the way to do it.”

No word yet on if he’s had to dish out any fines.

“Anything for Love… Including That”

Dustin F. Pedersen’s romantic side has landed him in jail. The 36-year-old is being charged with robbing a bank in Middletown, New Jersey. How’d they know it was Pedersen? He allegedly wore the same hat during a second robbery. He isn’t a complete jerk, though. Pedersen bought his girlfriend an engagement ring worth just under $4,500 less than an hour after the robbery. He denied robbing one of the banks, but there are jail phone calls of Pedersen and his fiancé discussing the crimes. Hey, at least she said yes.

“May Cause Side Effects”

What’s dumber, snorting cocaine or snorting a powder you think is cocaine? A group of nine backpackers from multiple countries were rushed to hospital in the west Australian city of Perth after snorting a drug they mistakenly though was cocaine. In reality, they had ingested Hyoscine, a prescription drug which left them suffering seizures, paralysis and hallucinations.

“Winging It”

Being stuck on the tarmac after your flight lands is annoying. A passenger sick of dealing with the delays took matters into his own hands and disembarked… by way of the emergency exit.

The 57-year-old man had flown from London to Malaga, Spain. The trip started with an hour-long delay and when they landed in Malaga, passengers were stuck on the tarmac for another half hour. That’s when the unnamed antsy passenger reportedly told a fellow flyer “I’m going via the wing.”

Security caught up with the man while he was hanging out on the wing and eventually convinced him to re-board the plane where he was held until authorities arrested him.

“An Itch to Scratch”

Not only is James Perry lucky, he also got a satisfying apology from his wife after she tried to convince him to stop buying scratch-off tickets. It’s understandable why Linda Perry thought he should give it up, considering James won $262-thousand from a Show Me Cash scratch-off ticket in July 2016.

She’d have to eat crow and apologize though, because James has won yet another jackpot. This time, the Chillicothe, Missouri man landed a $25-thousand a year for life prize off a different scratch-off.

James is now planning on retiring.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

“Price Tag Panic”

Most likely, the person who stole the bottle of Russo-Baltique vodka from the Cafe 33 bar in Copenhagen, Denmark knew what they were doing. According to the bar, the bottle is the most expensive in the world, valued at $1.3-million. While the price tag means a potential windfall, it also means plenty of people want the bottle back, including the Russian businessman who loaned the booze to Cafe 33. It’s unclear if the police have any leads.

“Salty After Stella”

Anthony Anderson has clearly never heard of moderation. The 43-year-old from the UK claims he got into a fight after sticking up for a friend. At one point a security guard got involved… and Anderson bit him on the leg. Probably not surprisingly… Anderson admitted to having a few beers. More specifically, he knocked back 20 pints of Stella. In the end, Anderson was sentenced to an eight-week prison sentence, community service, and fines.

“New Year’s Napper”

On New Year’s Eve, a man in Copenhagen, Denmark got in a taxi and asked to be driven to Oslo, Norway… about a six-hour drive. By the time the passenger arrived, it was New Year’s Day and he had a $22-hundred fare to pay. Instead, the unidentified man disappeared into his apartment. The driver understandably called police, who responded to the residence and found the passenger asleep. They woke him up and forced him to pay up. The driver’s 2018 started off with yet another annoyance: he required assistance after his battery died while waiting outside the customer’s home.

Rick Hall Dies At 85

Rick Hall, who produced dozens of hits as the owner of FAME Studios in Muscie Shoals, Ala., has died. He was 85.

Judy Hood, the wife of bassist David Hood and the chairperson of the Muscle Shoals Music Association, told Billboard that Hall died of cancer.

“I am sorry to hear about the passing of the ‘Father of Muscle Shoals Music,’ Rick Hall,” tweeted Alabama governor Kay Ivey. “He was truly a music legend and one of Alabama’s stars. He will surely be missed.”

As told in the 2013 documentary Muscle Shoals, Hall was born into poverty on Jan. 31, 1932 in Tishomingo County, Miss. He suffered a crushing blow when he was five when his three-year-old brother died. This split apart his family, with his mother becoming a prostitute.

“I carried that shame throughout my life,” he told No Depression. “It turned me into a rascal of sorts, and I became very hardened and determined. My determination made me a tough businessman and I was very hard to say no to. All of this helped me become a great record producer.”

According to Rolling Stone, he learned how to play guitar, mandolin and violin, playing in local country and R&B bands. But in the late ’50s he found himself as a songwriter, penning Roy Orbison’s “Sweet and Innocent” with Billy Sherrill. The duo, with Tom Stafford, formed the publishing house Florence Alabama Music Enterprises (FAME) in 1959. But they split with Hall, who retained the rights to the name, and he built FAME Studios in nearby Muscle Shoals.

He quickly had a hit in 1961 with Arthur Alexander’s “You Better Move On,” which was covered by the Rolling Stones. This allowed him to build a bigger studio and he soon put together a crack house band known as the Swampers — Hood, Barry Beckett (piano), Jimmy Johnson (guitar) and Roger Hawkins (drums) with Spooner Oldham (organ) and a horn section — all of whom were white, but fluent in soul music to the point where African American singers were surprised to discover who made the music when they arrived at the studio.

After Percy Sledge had a No. 1 hit in 1966 with “When a Man Loves a Woman,” cut at FAME, Jerry Wexler at Atlantic began bringing his artists to the studio. Wanting in on the action was a young guitarist, Duane Allman, who camped out in FAME’s parking lot until Hall gave him a shot, making his mark on Wilson Pickett’s cover of “Hey Jude” and Aretha Franklin’s cover of “The Weight.”

But by 1969, Hall and Wexler were feuding, and when Hall signed a distribution deal with Capitol, Wexler took the Swampers and helped fund the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, which they owned, across town. The split prompted Hall to return to his country roots, and many country and crossover hits over the next few decades were tracked within its walls. Gregg Allman chose FAME for his final record, Southern Blood.

Hall published his memoir, The Man from Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame, in 2015. He is survived by his wife, Linda, and sons, Rick Jr., Mark and Rodney.

Sir George Martin is Born

On January 3, 1926, Sir George Martin, who produced most of the Beatles’ most memorable recordings, is born in London.

When he was six, Martin’s family acquired a piano that sparked his interest in music. Following his graduation from high school, he worked for the BBC’s classical music department, then joined EMI in 1950. He was mostly known for producing classical and comedy recordings until The Beatles auditioned for Martin on June 6 of 1962, in Studio Three at the Abbey Road studios.

From that point, Martin would go on to produce all of the Beatles recordings until their final album Let It Be, which Phil Spector produced.

In addition to The Beatles, Martin produced other hit records by Cheap Trick, the Little River Band, America, Jeff Beck, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Gerry & The Pacemakers.

Sir Martin passed away at the age of 90, on March 8, 2016.
