On this day in 1974, Grand Funk Railroad started a two week run at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with their version of the Little Eva hit “The Loco-Motion.” The song was released as a single for the album Shinin’ On.

It was only the second time that a cover version had been a No.1 as well as the original.

Steve Smith: Perry Passed the Torch’ to Arnel Pineda at Hall of Fame

After 12 years, Steve Perry joined his former Journey band members on stage to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. According to drummer Steve Smith, when Perry decided not to sing, he “passed the torch” to the band’s current vocalist Arnel Pineda.

Smith spoke to Las Vegas Weekly and discussed the level of interaction he had with Perry during the HOF induction. “Whatever you saw onstage was it! I think some of the guys saw him backstage for a little bit, but I just saw him onstage. It was great to see him. He was very gracious. I thought he gave a beautiful speech, thanking the band, the management and the fans. And also he acknowledged Arnel, which was really a beautiful moment. It really makes it clear that he’s passing the torch to Arnel. He’s the lead singer in Journey and he’s doing an amazing job. He’s a tremendous singer and a really compelling frontman.”
On the subject of speculation that Perry had considered singing at the induction, Smith said: “There’s really not much of a story there. We asked him if he wanted to sing, and he declined – he said no, but that he would be there.”

Rhino Horn Stolen

The University of Vermont has been home to a black rhino horn since around 1900. That is, until someone stole it. Whoever took the item used a drill to break into Torrey Hall, where the horn had been hanging for decades.

Authorities believe the horn is heading for the black market, where it’s worth a pretty penny. To try and keep that from happening, the Fish and Wildlife Service are offering a $3,000 reward to solve the theft.

Airline Offers Gluten-Free Man A Banana

Gluten free seems to be a trend nowadays, but for Martin Pavelka, it’s medical necessity. So when the London man was flying from Tokyo to Sydney on All Nippon Airways, he ordered the gluten free breakfast option.

While his fellow passengers were enjoying eggs, sausage, mushrooms, bread, and yogurt, he was given a banana and a package that contained a fork, knife, and salt and pepper packages.

“This was a nine-hour flight,” Pavelka explains of his $15-hundred trip. “Although definitely gluten-free, the banana did not keep me full for very long.”

He adds that fellow passengers chuckled as he complained to a flight attendant, who agreed it was a problem. Pavelka has complained to All Nippon Airways but hasn’t heard anything yet.

Funeral Home Mix-Up Ends With A Mystery Body In The Casket

The family of Alice Dunn not only had to deal with her death, but with an incredibly unorganized funeral home. When they showed up to Swanson Funeral Home in Flint, Michigan, they discovered the wrong body was in the casket.

“I told them ‘that ain’t our mama,’” Maurice Dunn explains. “It was a total stranger dressed in the clothing that my brother Joey picked out.”

Perhaps the craziest part? At first, the funeral home denied they made a mistake insisting the woman in the casket was Alice. Eventually, Swanson Funeral Home brought out the right body. Maurice said he didn’t get a “heartfelt” apology, though.

Drunk driver says her name is Hillary Clinton:

Regardless of politics, cops are not likely to enjoy a joke from someone accused of driving under the influence. Police began chasing Holly Lynn Donahoo in Maryland before spike strips were used to stop her in Chalkhill, Pennsyvlania. That’s when she told authorities her name was Hillary Clinton. It’s unclear why she decided to lie, but Donahoo was taken to a hospital, where she allegedly refused drugs and alcohol testing. Donahoo’s since been jailed on charges including driving under the influence and fleeing or eluding police.

Underwear-clad carjacking suspect arrested:

Sharnett Burton didn’t feel the need to dress up before committing a crime. The 30-year-old Florida woman was the suspect in a carjacking case and when police found her, she had crashed into a pole near the entrance of a Walmart and ran into the store…wearing only a bra and underwear. When police tried to arrest Burton, she continually tried to flee. In the end, she was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with damage and one count of resisting arrest without violence. Oh, and a charge in a nearby town for that pesky old carjacking.

Man breaks into his neighbor’s house…to eat:

Joel Puglia really didn’t want to go grocery shopping. The 55-year-old man told cops he broke into his neighbor’s Rock Hill, South Carolina home because he didn’t have anything to eat in his house. The neighbor’s security camera caught Puglia walking into the house, where he admits he made a pimento cheese sandwich and had a pickle. Puglia’s now facing burglary and petty larceny charges.

New Trial Ordered for Man Convicted of Killing Ex-Girlfriend

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A new trial has been ordered for a Cedar Rapids man who’d been convicted of stabbing to death his former girlfriend.

The Iowa Court of Appeals said in its ruling Wednesday for Nicholas Luerkens that the trial court “erred in denying the defendant’s request to submit an insanity defense instruction to the jury.”

In November 2015 a jury found Luerkens guilty of first-degree murder for killing 29-year-old Lynnsey Donald. Officials say Luerkens stabbed Donald dozens of times in a Marion parking lot on April 21, 2015, as Donald’s 7-year-old son watched. Prosecutors say Luerkens had been following Donald for months before the attack.

Defense lawyers say Luerkens was overusing an antidepressant drug, which contributed to diminished mental capacity during the attack.

Chegwidden, Lundsgaard Named All-Heart

Oskaloosa–A pair of William Penn men’s golfers were rewarded for exceptional campaigns as the all-Heart of America Athletic Conference team was announced Tuesday.

Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management) and Frederik Lundsgaard (Jr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) were named to the 15-player squad. Both are first-time honorees.

The two award recipients are the most for William Penn since it also had two in 2010.

The duo helped the Statesmen to a record-breaking season that concluded with WPU tying for second at the Heart Championships. It was the program’s best league finish since joining the NAIA and its best in decades.

William Penn won six tournament crowns, tallied two runner-up placings, and managed four more bronze finishes.

Chegwidden owned a 72.5 stroke average, while Lundsgaard was at 73.3; both competed in 24.5 rounds. Each individual broke the school’s single-season stroke average (previously at 73.9).

Lundsgaard snapped WPU’s 18-hole record with a 65 at the Central Methodist Open in September, while Chegwidden’s 134 (66-68) at the William Penn Classic in October set the program’s 36-hole mark.

Chegwidden went under par 11 times (once on a nine-hole course); Lundsgaard accomplished the feat on five occasions (also on a nine-hole course). Both linksters won (or tied for the low score) in three events and both were in the 60s or 70s in all but one event each. Chegwidden went under 70 seven times and Lundsgaard did so in three rounds.

Kaz Sakai of Missouri Valley was tabbed as Heart Player of the Year, while MVC’s Jordan Dickson and Chris Winkle of Grand View shared the Coach of the Year laurel.

On this day in 1986, Robert Palmer went to No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Addicted To Love'”. The song was released as the second single from Palmer’s Riptide album.

The song originally was recorded by Palmer and Chaka Khan as a duet, but due to contractual problems, her voice was removed.

It was one of the last 45 RPM singles to receive a million-selling Gold certification.

The Eagles Suing the Owners of a “Hotel California” in Mexico

The Eagles have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court against the Todo Santos hotel in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The band says the resort is infringing on their trademarks, billing the property as the “Hotel California” without permission from the band.

Todos Sants opened as the Hotel California in 1950, before going through a number of name changes and owners. The Current owners restored the “Hotel California” name in 2001. According to numerous sources, including TripAdvisor, the hotel plays Eagles songs over the PA system, also it sells t-shirts that call the hotel “legendary” — as if to suggest that it was the inspiration for the song. They also own the website hotelcaliforniabaja.com.

The complaint reads, “Defendants lead U.S. consumers to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and, among other things, served as the inspiration for the lyrics in ‘Hotel California,’ which is false.” The paperwork also notes that the owners attempted to register the Hotel California name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Eagles’ Don Henley has always insisted that the lyrics were not about an actual hotel, but rather a metaphor. “It’s basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about”.

A 17-Foot-Long Snake Is On The Loose

The residents of Meadow Lakes, Alaska are understandably a bit concerned. A 17-foot-long pet python has somehow gone missing.

The serpent’s owner has gone door-to-door warning neighbors that the bright-yellow and white animal is on the loose. Officials recommend small pets be brought inside while the hunt is on for the snake.

In mildly calming news, pythons are not venomous. Instead, the snakes kill their prey by constriction. It’s worth noting that this particular python weighs a hundred pounds…

Got some serious expendable income and want to ride in style? Head to Japan. A railway company has launched Train Suite Shiki-shima, which boasts sky views, bathtubs and dark wood interiors…and a $10-thousand price tag.

The train takes passengers on a four-day trip during which they can enjoy glass ceilings and walls built into two observatory coaches at the front and rear of the train.

Thing is? Even if you have the cash, you’ll have to wait a minute to get that luxe ride. The 10-car train is fully booked until March 2018.

A Guy Rescues a Woman Who Fell Onto the Train Tracks . . . and Someone Stole His Backpack

See, this is why you never do anything for anyone.

A 34-year-old guy named Anil Vennavalli was at a train station in Edison, New Jersey last Friday morning when one of his female coworkers FAINTED and fell off the platform onto the tracks.

Anil immediately dropped his backpack and jumped down to help her. Two other people also jumped down, and the three of them pulled the woman to safety JUST before a train arrived.

And what was Anil’s reward for his heroism? While he was down on the tracks, someone STOLE his backpack.

He says it had his $700 computer, $200 cash, and his headphones inside. The cops are trying to track down the thief.

As for the woman, she said she fainted because she hadn’t had time to eat breakfast that morning. She wound up with a fractured knee and a broken ankle.

911 dispatcher heard snoring on the job gets suspended:

Being a 911 dispatcher is a draining job, but that doesn’t mean you can take a nap mid-shift. Jasmin Thomas was caught sleeping on the job after she was heard snoring after picking up a call. What’s more, this isn’t the first time she was in hot water for catching some z’s. Fortunately for her, and maybe unfortunately for the people of Cleveland, she was only suspended for six days and was able to keep her job.

Man steals woman’s gaming consoles at gunpoint after sleeping together:

Kareem Mutcherson is the worst kind of person you could meet on an online dating site: a criminal. The 23-year-old from Florida slept with a woman he met on Plenty of Fish only to later return to her house, hold all the occupants at gunpoint, and steal stole several gaming consoles. What’s more, Mutcherson has a history with the victim’s family. Think this crook can’t get any more scummy? Not only did he pistol whip the victim’s 68-year-old dad, but it turns out he had a child waiting in his getaway car. For what it’s worth, Mutcherson claims the victim gave him those gaming consoles as gifts. Police aren’t buying it and charged him with robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older.

Another Person Charged with Burning “The Bridges of Madison County” Bridge in Iowa

WINTERSET, Iowa (AP) — A third person has been arrested in the burning of a covered Iowa bridge featured in the novel “The Bridges of Madison County.”

Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes said Tuesday that 19-year-old Alivia Bergmann, of Des Moines, was taken into custody in South Carolina on an Iowa arson charge and will be returned. Court records don’t list the name of an attorney for her.

One of the two other defendants, 18-year-old Joel Davis, pleaded not guilty Monday. The initial arson charge against the remaining defendant has been dropped. But prosecutors say they expect to charge the 17-year-old with a lesser count. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

The bridge destroyed April 15 near Winterset also was featured in the 1995 movie adaptation.
