Brown on First Team, Three Others on Second Squad

Oskaloosa–The William Penn softball team had four players receive league accolades as the all-Heart of America Athletic Conference teams were announced Monday.

Emily Brown (Jr., Waverly, Iowa, Biology) was one of 20 players picked for the league’s first team, while Michelle Castro (Fr., Acampo, Calif., Business Management), Kodee Johnson (Sr., Stockton, Calif., General Mathematics), and Chyanne Koko (Jr., Waianae, Hawaii, Physical Education) all earned second-team recognition (20 players on that team as well). Seven additional players claimed honorable mentions.

The awards are the first for both Brown and Castro, while Koko and Johnson are now two-time honorees. The quartet guided the Statesmen (24-29, 12-22 Heart) during the 2017 campaign.

Brown hit .350 (55-for-157) with 11 doubles and a team-best five home runs. The junior catcher finished the season with 33 RBIs and 24 runs scored. She also posted a .516 slugging percentage and a .391 on-base mark (nine walks, three hit-by-pitches). A one-time Heart Player of the Week, Brown owned a five-game hitting streak.

Castro topped the navy and gold with a .368 batting clip (team-high 64 hits in 174 at-bats). She recorded 19 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 21 RBIs, and a squad-best 41 runs. The freshman also had a .557 slugging mark and a .400 on-base percentage (five walks, five hit-by-pitches). Castro, who also led WPU with nine stolen bases, tallied a season-best 10-game hitting streak.

Among all Heart players, Castro was third in both doubles and doubles per game (0.38), fourth in hits per game (1.28), fifth with 117 fielding assists, eighth in hits, runs, and total bases per game (1.94), ninth in batting average, and 10th in runs scored per game (0.82).

Johnson’s .359 batting average (56-for-156) included three doubles and one triple. She scored 25 times and drove in eight runs with a .391 slugging percentage and a .365 on-base mark (two walks). The senior stole eight bases and also posted 11 sacrifice hits. Johnson managed an eight-game hitting streak.

Koko posted a .340 batting average (54-for-159), highlighted by 18 doubles and four home runs. She had 30 runs and 28 RBIs along with a .528 slugging percentage and a .386 on-base mark (eight walks, four hit-by-pitches). Koko’s longest hitting streak was seven games.

The junior ranked fourth in the conference with .38 doubles per contest and fifth in total doubles.

Brown, as a catcher, and Koko, as a center fielder, were also named to the Gold Glove team. Brown owned a .993 fielding percentage with just one error in 151 chances (121 putouts, 29 assists), while Koko had an .872 clip (86 chances–65 putouts, 10 assists). The fielding award is the first for both athletes.

Devin Brown of Grand View was named Heart Player of the Year, while teammate Claudia Farrell was picked as Pitcher of the Year. Freshman of the Year laurels went to Sydney Tigges (Clarke) and Alexis Paulo Meyers (Peru State) collected the Newcomer of the Year accolade. Clarke’s Jeff Lamb was tabbed as Coach of the Year by his peers.

John Mellencamp: Rock’s Glory Days Are Over

John Mellencamp has joined the likes of former KISS drummer Peter Criss in thinking that Rock is no longer relevant and that it’s never coming back.

During a Q&A session for the Direct Connection event series, Mellencamp explained his stance off the consuming and staying power of music.

“I’ve got two boys, 22 and 21, and I don’t think they ever sat down and listened to a whole album in their whole life,” said Mellencamp. “I read just the other day — I think it was Ray Davies — that rock ‘n’ roll is going to come back. It’s not going to come back. We’ve seen it. It happened … it’s like we had a 50-year run of a particular type of music and history will tell us that.”

When someone pointed out that rock was just one of the styles of music that had its turn on top of the charts, Mellencamp argued that it wasn’t just the cyclical taste that hurt rock’s time at the top, but the way the industry is hobbled by the rapid amount of entertainment options for the consumer.

“I’m not saying there aren’t great songwriters out there. There are,” he added. “But we’re never going to experience them the way we able to experience them in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. We’re not set up for that anymore.”

Though Mellencamp believes the heyday of rock is over, he recently released his new album, Sad Clowns and Hillbillies.

Human Ken Doll’s Next Plastic Surgery Could Leave Him Blind

It seems like every few months we hear of a new plastic surgery addict trying to turn themselves into a doll. Well Rodrigo Alves might take the cake for most dedicated. The 33-year-old, who lives in London, has already spent $515-thousand on over 150 procedures, but his next one could leave him blind.

Alves is flying to New Delhi to get his eyes permanently changed from brown to gray so he can stop wearing pricey contacts everyday. Doctors are set to slit his eyeball and “slot in” an artificial iris next week. All for $10,300.

Why is he flying all the way to India? Understandably, there aren’t too many surgeons willing to perform the very risky surgery.

Escaped Zebra Goes For A Run In Florida

Imagine driving down the street and getting hit by a zebra. That’s right, getting hit by a zebra. That’s what happened to a man in Wimauma, Florida who had a run in with an escaped pet zebra.

The animal ran into the driver’s side of his car, breaking his window and sending glass flying, some of which hit him. The zebra then ran into a field where it was eventually corralled by authorities.

While the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation won’t say how exactly the animal managed to get out, its owner does have the proper permits to house the zebra. As for the driver, it appears he wasn’t seriously injured.

UPDATE: Ronald McDonald statue found:

Ronald McDonald is back home. Authorities in Clinton, New Jersey found the life-size statue that was stolen from outside a local McDonald’s earlier this month. Police aren’t giving any more details, but the Micky D’s owners say the Ron is unharmed but will be moving to a more secure location.

Police accidentally discover a stolen goat:

When authorities in St. Paul, Minnesota saw a driver blow a stop sign, they figured they had a regular old traffic infraction on their hands. Instead, after a brief chase, cops discovered a frightened goat in the back seat of the SUV. The driver and three passengers tried to flee on foot but were caught. It turns out the gaggle of idiots stole Gordy, one of the 30 goats brought to Indian Mounds Park to eat invasive weeds. Now two 29-year-old men are being held on possible theft charges. What’s more, the men had knocked down the goat enclosure so cops also had to round up Gordy’s pals, who had gone for a walk after the goat was stolen.

Man destroys his house trying to get rid of possums:

It’s going to be hard for this guy to go the rest of his life knowing he was outsmarted by a group of RODENT COWARDS.

A guy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania went to war with a group of POSSUMS who were living in his yard last week. And on Wednesday night, he tried to SMOKE them out by lighting a pile of leaves on fire in his backyard.

But the fire got out of control and spread to his house . . . and burned it down.

Fortunately, no one was killed in the fire, but a firefighter had to go to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

There’s no word on whether the guy accomplished his goal and got the opossums to leave or if he’s going to be facing any charges.

And one more thing: The fire department said he told them he also has a problem with bees. Can’t wait to see how he tries to deal with THEM.

On this day in 1969, The Beatles released “Get Back” as a single in the US. The song was originally released just as a single credited to “The Beatles with Billy Preston.” Eventually, a different mix would wind up as the closing track for the album Let It Be. The single version was later issued on the compilation albums 1967–1970, 20 Greatest Hits, Past Masters, and 1.

John Lennon stated in 1980 that Paul McCartney looked at Yoko Ono in the studio every time he sang “Get back to where you once belonged.” Lennon also stated that “there’s some underlying thing about Yoko in there”.

The song hit #1 on nearly every single major pop chart and was Certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.

Cryptic Message on Robert Plant’s Website Starts Led Zeppelin Reunion Rumor

“Any time now…”

That’s the message that Robert Plant has on the front page of his website. And that’s it. There’s nothing else on the page.

With those cryptic three words, Plant has put the internet into a frenzy. Could Led Zeppelin be reuniting?

Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones reunited 10 years ago in London, with Jason Bonham taking his father’s place behind the drum kit. Since then, Plant has turned down any reunion rumors.

While many are getting their credit cards ready to purchase Zeppelin reunion tickets, the message could be misleading, as Plant has been working on new material, so the message could be referring to that.

According to Feel Numb, however, their sources are telling them that Zeppelin will be reuniting for the festival Desert Trip 2017, which would coincide with the Led Zeppelin 50th Anniversary.

The festival is due to take place in Indio, California, in October. Last year’s event featured the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, the Who and Roger Waters.

Skydiver Survives Being Entangled Under Plane

A skydive in Denmark almost turned deadly. Almost. A skydiver jumped from a plane, only to be entangled underneath the aircraft.

It turns out, pilot Leif Johannsen forgot to cut the line connecting the diver’s deployment bag to the plane. Firefighters put down a foam to cushion a grassy area, which helped ease the landing.

Incredibly, the skydiver only sustained bruises. According to pilot Johannsen, it was the 45-year-old jumper’s calm demeanor that also helped prevent a bigger tragedy.

Darth Vader Costume Prompts Evacuation

To “Star Wars” fans, May 4th has become an unofficial holiday. While people were saying “May the fourth be with you,” a play on the movie’s iconic “may the force be with you” line, one high schooler in Wisconsin got in the holiday spirit by dressing up as villain Darth Vader.

Unfortunately for the unnamed teenager, a parent got nervous when she saw him walking in through a back door wearing a mask, what she thought was body armor, and carrying a bag. The unidentified woman then called 911.

Ashwaubenon (PR: ash-WAH’-beh-non) High School was evacuated and despite it being a false alarm, authorities say the parent did the right by reporting what she saw as a threat.

Woman Swallows Thousands Of Dollars During A Fight With Her Husband

A woman in Colombia had saved $7-thousand after having sold several electrical household items. She was going to use the money for a vacation with her husband, but they got into a fight. The unidentified woman didn’t want her hubby to know about the cash, so naturally she swallowed rolls of $100 bills.

Surgeons have removed 57 of the hundreds from the woman’s stomach and intestines. The rest will pass through her colon, director of surgery Juan Paulo Serrano explains.

He adds that since the rolls of cash weren’t wrapped up or packaged, it’s unlikely the money was swallowed for any criminal reason.

Man arrested at the airport with a backpack full of snakes, lizards, and more:

Everybody loves a good souvenir, but one man returning home to Russia from a trip to Brazil did not follow customs rules. The unidentified man was found with dozens of live snakes, frogs, cockroaches and lizards hidden in his luggage, some of which were extremely poisonous. The man was arrested and held in custody while an investigation was launched. The reptiles and insects were taken to an animal shelter.

Couple admits to giving their tween 10 shots of vodka:

Charles Younger Jr. and Michelle Edwards have taken the idea of being “cool” parents way too far. The Allentown, Pennsylvania couple allowed their 13-year-old daughter to celebrate her birthday by taking 10 shots of vodka. The teenager was airlifted, while unconscious, to a hospital with a blood-alcohol level of .32%— four times the legal limit to drive in Pennsylvania (and basically lethal). What’s worse, Younger and Edwards fled the house after 911 was called. They’ve since pled guilty to child endangerment charges and could each serve more than a year in the county jail.

Man charged with bowling pin attack:

Michael Joseph Schumacher is not the man you want living next door. The 51-year-old from Missoula, Montana was living in a motel when he got into a fight with two men. It’s unclear what the fight was over, but Schumacher came back for round two swinging a bowling pin, which he used to hit his neighbor. He also threatened to shoot the neighbor. Schumacher is now facing a charge of assault with a weapon thanks to that bowling pin.

Man Once Convicted in 2009 Iowa Slaying Reaches Plea Deal

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A man once convicted of killing an Iowa City landlord in 2009 has made a deal to plead guilty.

A motion submitted Thursday in Johnson County District Court doesn’t say what charge will be pleaded to by Justin Marshall. The motion asked the court to set a hearing for the plea and sentencing.

In 2013 Marshall was convicted of shooting to death 64-year-old John Versypt in a stairway at the Broadway Condominiums in southeast Iowa City. Police and prosecutors have said it was a robbery gone awry.

But Marshall’s conviction was overturned, and the Iowa Supreme Court ruled last June that he should get a new trial because authorities relied on the testimony of a jailhouse informant, violating Marshall’s right to an attorney.

Fellows and Anderson Repeat on Shawn’s Hay Grinding Night

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 3rd, 2017) – The Southern Iowa Speedway roared in to the merry month of May with Shawn’s Hay Grinding of Keystone Night at the races. The pit area saw 82 cars checked in the five weekly IMCA divisions on a nice chilly spring evening. Also in attendance was three Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models hot lapping for their weekend swing in Iowa, those three was Ricky Thornton Jr., Rodney Sanders and Billy Moyer.

Daniel Fellows (IMCA Sport Compacts) and Shannon Anderson (IMCA Hobby Stocks) repeated with their second feature wins in as many weeks. Nathan Wood (IMCA Stock Cars), Curtis VanDerWal (IMCA SportMods) and Kelly Shryock (IMCA Modifieds) took their first win of 2017 at the monster half mile.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap Kelli Steil State Farm IMCA Sport Compacts feature event and it was Nathan Moody and Bryan Claussen leading the field to the green. Last week’s winner Daniel Fellows started eighth but be the end of lap one, Fellows was in the race lead. Fellows began to pull away but the caution came out when Austin Reumann went on a spin cycle on the fronstretch. Fellows flexed his muscles to take the win despite late challenges from Belleview, Nebraska’s Denny Berghahn, Berghahn finished second. Barry Taft driving his car this week came home third, Dillon Richards from Beatrice, Nebraska was fourth and Cody Van Dusen was fifth.

Donnie Pearson and Louis Lynch led the field to the green in the 18 lap Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event. Lynch grabbed the top spot on lap one but left the door opened allowing Nathan Wood to take the top spot away on lap two. Wood began to pull away until lap nine when last week winner Mike Hughes began to chase down. The caution came out on lap 11 for Damon Murty coming to a stop in turn one. Wood and the field saw the caution come out again on lap 16 for Dustin Griffiths spinning on the fronstretch for a left front flat. Wood had great restart both times meanwhile Hughes saw Todd Reitzler and Derrick Agee show their strength late in the race. Wood took the win ahead of Reitzler, Agee, Hughes and Danny Thrasher.

Oskaloosa True Value IMCA Sport Mods 16 lap feature event was next on to the monster half mile and it was New Sharon’s Colton Livezey taking advantage of his outside front row starting spot by taking the early lead. Livezey saw Carter VanDenBerg take the lead away on lap five. VanDenBerg began to pull away meanwhile Curtis VanDerWal messed up in turns three and four losing a few spots around the same time. VanDerWal worked his way through the field and began to chase down VanDenBerg. VanDenBerg saw VanDerWal take the lead away on the high side with two laps to go. VanDerWal made the high side work and held off VanDenBerg to get his first win of the 2017 at his hometown track. VanDenBerg settled for second. Livezey, Logan Anderson and Jason McDaniel rounded out top five.

Kelly Shryock started outside front row of the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event and never looked back going on to take the win. Todd Shute, who ran second for much of the race saw Brookfield, Missouri’s Hunter Marriott take the second spot away putting Shute back to the third spot. Colt Mather worked his away up to finish fourth and Cayden Carter came home fifth.

Final feature of the night was the KBOE Radio / Mahaska Bottling IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. Mike Kincaid and Steve Allen led the field to the green and it was Kincaid taking the lead early. Kincaid held the top spot until lap fourwhen Shannon Anderson was able to get by after working his way from the eighth starting spot. Anderson went on to repeat from last week with Kincaid, Brad Stephens, Bill Bonnett and Aaron Martin completing out the top five.

Next Wednesday Night, the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders will take to the Southern Iowa Speedway for Oskaloosa True Value Night. Along with the Sprint Invaders will be all five IMCA Classes. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm.
