Oskaloosa High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Jacie White as the new high school head girl’s basketball coach.

Jacie White brings strong experience to this position. White has been the girls basketball assistant coach for the past 2 seasons and played for the Northwestern College Red Raiders. Jacie currently teaches business at Oskaloosa High School.

“We are extremely excited to name Jacie our head girls basketball coach,” said Ryan Parker, Oskaloosa Activities Director. “She has the drive and determination to lead this program and I know she cannot wait to get in the gym.”

The rock world was in shock last week, after the sudden death of Chris Cornell. Steven Tyler had posted a tribute to Cornell online, but Tyler felt like he needed to do more.

During the Aerosmith show at the Black Sea Arena in Batumi, Georgia, over the weekend, the members of Aerosmith led the audience in a moment of silence for the Soundgarden & Audioslave lead singer.

In the fan-shot footage below, Tyler told the crowd “Let’s take a moment of silence for Chris Cornell,” and added, “Dear God, may this man forever dream on.” Tyler sat a piano while an image of Cornell was broadcast over the screens in the arena, as the band performed “Dream On”.

Insurance Brokerage Agrees to Repay Cities, Counties

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State regulators say an Iowa insurance brokerage accused of a deceptive practice has agreed to repay more than $1.3 million to local governments.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/2qRv7kn ) that Two Rivers Insurance Co., which is based in Burlington, was accused in 2014 of inflating the amount it spent on premiums for health coverage purchased from Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Documents released Monday say Wellmark complained to state regulators that the brokerage had improperly included up to 7 percent in its own fees in “premium” costs that it billed to local governments for insurance for 10,500 public employees.

Two Rivers President Todd Ackerman says the brokerage still denies any wrongdoing but is settling the dispute to avoid “an extremely costly and burdensome legal process.”

Chegwidden Earns All-Region Award

Oskaloosa-–Zachary Chegwidden (Fr., Essex, England, Business Management) was honored as one of the top golfers in the NAIA as the PING all-region teams were announced by Golf Coaches Association of America Thursday.

Chegwidden was one of 15 individuals named to the North region’s squad, while 15 linksters were picked for the South, Central, and West regions as well.

It is not only the freshman’s first regional recognition, but also the first in the program’s history.

Chegwidden guided William Penn to a record-breaking year that ended with the Statesmen tying for second at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships.

The freshman owned a 72.5 stroke average in 24.5 rounds, snapping the school single-season stroke average record. His 134 (66-68) at the William Penn Classic in October set the program’s 36-hole mark.

A three-time tournament low-scorer, Chegwidden was in the 60s or 70s in 23.5 rounds (seven times under 70, low of 66). He broke par 11 times (once on a nine-hole course).

On this day in 1971, The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers started a four-week run at #1 on the US Billboard 200 charts. The album was the group’s second #1 album in the US and is known for its iconic artwork. On the original vinyl release, the cover had a working zipper that opened to reveal cotton briefs, which was designed by Andy Warhol.

The album produced a number of hits for the band, including “Brown Sugar”, “Wild Horses”, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”, and the sweeping ballad “Moonlight Mile”. The album has since been Certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA

Brian May Reveals New Details of the Final Days of Freddie Mercury

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times (via the Daily Telegraph) Queen guitarist Brian May revealed new details on the legendary Freddie Mercury’s final days. Mercury was a very quiet when it came to his personal life, protecting his privacy, even as he battled with AIDS.

One of the most shocking things to come out of the interview was May claiming the disease was taking Mercury down piece by piece, including his foot, which had to be amputated.

“The problem was actually his foot,” May told the Times. “Tragically there was very little left of it. Once, he showed it to us at dinner. And he said, ‘Oh Brian, I’m sorry I’ve upset you by showing you that.’ And I said, ‘I’m not upset, Freddie, except to realize you have to put up with all this terrible pain.’”

Mercury would shortly before the major advancements in AID research. May believes if it would have happened later, that he’d still be alive.

“He missed by just a few months. If it had been a bit later he would still have been with us, I’m sure,” said May. “You can’t do ‘what if,’ can you? You can’t go there because therein lies madness.”

Since this interview has come out, May has expressed his unhappiness with the interview, which was to originally focus on the Queen in 3-D retrospective book.

“This woman came into my house, pretended she was a fan and was going to write a nice piece about the book, as agreed; then went away and wrote this pathetic sensationalistic drivel. I’m angry and disgusted,” wrote May, pointing out that he’d agreed to give the Times the exclusive on the book, including any photos they wanted to run — and they “used just two of them, one of them reproduced not much bigger than a postage stamp; the rest of the piece illustrated with recycled ordinary snaps from God knows where.”

May didn’t single out any specific quotes that left him unsatisfied, but he did admit his anger towards what the headline described as “the debauchery of the Freddie Mercury years.” He also revealed that he will never give the Times “the time of day” from here on out, he assured fans that the book has nothing to do with the story presented by the article.

“I spent over two years fashioning this into the first book of its kind — EVER — a biography of a band from the inside illustrated with my own photographs — and in 3-D, with a fabulous viewer to bring them to life in three dimensions,” May insisted. “It’s honest, goes deep and is tasteful and dignified (I have been told!) but nobody reading this awful amateurish piece of journalistic opportunism would know it.”

Lottery Winner’s Son Sues For More Money

Dave Dawes won $131-million in the lotto. He’s had to use some of that money for legal fees because his son Michael tried to sue him. Why? He wanted more money.

Dave gave his son, who has a high paying IT job, about $2-million. Within two years, 32-year-old Michael and 34-year-old partner James Beedle had blown through most of it. So Michael did what ungrateful child would do: took his dad to court claiming his pops and stepmom Angie promised he’d never have to worry about money.

Thankfully, the judge in the case saw the situation for what it was and dismissed Michael’s claims. As he puts it, “there was no basis on which any rational or normal human being could conclude that they could go back for more money whenever they wanted.”

Weed Stash Accidentally Donated To Charity

Whoever dropped off a bag of clothing at the Maplewood, Minnesota consignment shop Once Upon A Child left something very valuable, and illegal, behind. According to authorities, the bag also included 60 small bags of marijuana, worth about $11-hundred.

Police took to social media to ask the “genius” who “accidentally donated” the drugs to come forward. So far, no ones come forward

Kid narcs on his dad for having a stash of drugs:

Kids say the darnedest, and the most incriminating, things. An 11-year-old in Lawrence, Massachusetts called the police and informed them that his dad had a stash of drugs in his luggage and had sold narcotics earlier in the day. When police investigated, they found more than 200 grams of heroin and the opioid fentanyl, worth about $8,500, in the suitcase. Dad Yamil Mercado, is now facing trafficking heroin and reckless endangerment of a child charges.

Woman accused of trying to sell her baby:

We have another contender for the worst mom of 2017. Keanaendigo M. James has been arrested after she reportedly tried to sell her newborn daughter. The price of a baby according to the 22-year-old? $17-hundred. Montoursville, Pennsylvania police also charged James with driving without a license and operating a vehicle out of inspection.

Police officer steals package of hamburger he shoved down his pants:

Matthew Barthelmass was caught with hamburger down his pants. Seriously. The 36-year-old Kentwood, Missouri man was spotted with a $30 package of meat down his pants after he tried to walk out of the store without paying. The real twist? Barthelmass is a police sergeant. Well he was. The 15-year veteran of the force resigned and is now facing a shoplifting charge.

Ottumwa Library Announces Summer Reading Program

May 18, 2017 – Ottumwa, Iowa – The Ottumwa Public Library is excited to announce that we will again be having our Summer Reading Program. As in previous years, we will have a program for all ages with the theme “Build a Better World.” All of our programs run May 30-August 11, 2017.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: Children ages 0-14 can sign up at the library. After registering, they will receive a reading log to complete. They then turn in their reading logs at the end of June, July, and shortened August months. With each completed log returned, kids will receive a goodie bag of prizes and be entered in the grand prize drawing for their age group. Grand prizes for the three children’s age groups include: a large Lego Duplo set or a Build & Grow Prize pack for the Infant/Toddler/Preschool ages; a Lego Minecraft Fortress Building kit or a Build a Better World Prize pack for the K-5^th grades; and an Amazon gift card or Build a Better World Prize pack for the 6^th-8^th grades.

The Summer Reading Program will also have 12 programs scheduled this summer to entertain children of all ages. This year they are scheduled at different times in an attempt to accommodate parents’ varying work schedules. We have daytime, evening and weekend performances scheduled.

The Library would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for hosting our programs which include: Dizzy’s Summer Reading Kick Off on June 8^th at 10:30 am. Information about the other programs is available at the library and on our website. TEEN PROGRAM: There is also a Summer Reading Program for teens. If you are a teen (9^th-12^th grade) and love to read, OPL wants you to sign up today for this year’s program. All you have to do is sign up at the Children’s Desk on the first floor of the library and pick up a reading log. There will be reading logs for June, July and the beginning of August. When you return the log you receive a prize bag and your name will be entered into the drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card.

We will also be having events for Teens throughout the summer including: Choose Your Own Book Club, Teen Graphic Novel Book Club, a Teen Writers Club and on Saturday, August 12 from 3-5pm, there will be a Teen Trivia Party to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program at the library.

ADULT PROGRAM: Summer reading programs are not just for kids! If you’re an avid adult reader (age 18+), OPL wants you to be a part of our Adult Summer Reading program. Sign up at the Reference Desk and, just for signing up, you’ll receive a watering can flower pot. Read three books before August 11^th and submit your form and you’ll earn a tape measure and will be entered into a

drawing for other great prizes, including gift certificates to O’Hara Hardware, Edd the Florist, Inc., and Earl May Garden Center.

On this day in 1978, Dire Straits released their first major label single “Sultans of Swing”. The song did not hit the charts in 1978, but following a re-issue in 1979, the song hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Though they weren’t awarded with Certification in the US by the RIAA, the song was Certified Silver in the UK, Gold in Canada, and Platinum in Italy.

Roger Waters has been teasing his new album for quite some time now. In gearing up for the release, Waters has officially released a music video for his new song “The Last Refugee”.

“The Last Refugee” is expected to be the third and final pre-release track from Is This the Life We Really Want?. Waters unveiled the first single “Smell the Roses” a week after announcing the album, and followed up two weeks later with teasing the track, “Deja Vu.”

Is This the Life We Really Want? will be his fifth studio album. The new LP is due out June 2nd, and will continue Water’s socially conscious rock n’ roll style. In the press release announcing the album, it is described as an “unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times” — a promise upheld by the video for “The Last Refugee,” which seeks to humanize the displaced by depicting them in the act of creation, expression and reflection.

This album snaps a 25-year drought between studio LPs from the former Pink Floyd frontman.
