Anderson Remains Perfect on Musco Lighting Night

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 31st, 2017) – Wednesday Night was a picture perfect night for racing and the action on the track was just as exciting from the first green flag to the final checkered flag. Racing action finished up in 1 hour and 45 minutes with 63 cars signed in to compete in the five IMCA divisions on Musco Lighting Night.

Shannon Anderson remains perfect after picking up the Hobby Stocks feature. Curtis VanDerWal (Sport Mods) and Cayden Carter (Modifieds), each repeated from last week. New Feature Winners was Brandon Housley (Sport Compacts) and Derrick Agee (Stock Cars).

First feature was the 12 lap Kelli Steli State farm IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Billy Cain and Bryan Claussen lead the field to the green flag but it was second row starter Brandon Housley jumping to the top spot early meanwhile Cain, Claussen and Cody Van Dusen battled for the number two spot. Housley pulled away and never looked back going on to take the win ahead if Levi Heath, Nathan Moody, Cody Van Dusen and Claussen.

Oskaloosa True Value IMCA Sport Mods 16 lap feature was next to roll on to the speedway and it was Danny Brau and Jason Hall leading the field. Hall took advantage and took the top spot and appeared comfortable out front until Points Leader Curtis VanDerWal worked his way through the field from his tenth starting spot to take the lead away on lap nine. VanDerWal pulled away and had a full straight way lead to take his third straight win at his hometown track. Fellow Oskaloosa Native Carter VanDenBerg grabbed second away from Jason Hall, who settled for third. Cory Van Zante finished fourth and Jack Housley was fifth.

The feature that always seem to have the fans on the edge of the seats is the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Once again they proved the nickname of Class To Tough To Tame despite only ten cars signed in. Danny Thrasher and Dustin Griffiths started on the front row but by lap one it was Todd Reitzler taking the top spot. Reitzler and the field saw the caution come out just after lap one for Cody McClure in turn four. Reitzler knew his hands was full on the restart with Griffiths, Derrick Agee and Nathan Wood behind him but he held them off by choosing the fastest lane around the speedway. However another caution came out on lap eight and that forced another restart. This time, Reitzler was not able to off Derrick Agee as Agee grabbed the spot away. Agee held on to become the fourth different feature winner at the Southern Iowa Speedway this season. Reitzler came home second, Nathan Wood finished third, Mike Hughes was fourth and Dustin Griffiths slipped back to finish fifth.

Bradley Graham took advantage of his front row starting spot by grabbing the lead early in the KBOE Radio / Mahaska Bottling IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. Just after one lap scored the caution came out for Cody Cleghorn and Kurtis Oliver in turn four. Graham and Aaron Martin batteld for the top spot on the restart with Graham holding on to the top spot, meanwhile Shannon Anderson, started eighth was chipping his way through the field. On Lap six, Anderson would grab the lead away from Graham and began to pull away only to see the caution come out on lap 11 for Cleghorn in turn four. Anderson held on to stay perfect in Hobby Stocks at Osky. Aaron Martin, Chanse Hollatz, Bill Bonnett and Thomas Stevens rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 18 lap Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature. Shawn Ritter, Andrew Schroeder and Cayden Carter battled for the race lead early and it was Carter that took the top spot forcing the other two to battle it out early. Carter cruised on take his second win at Osky in his VanderBuilt Chassis Modified. Colt Mather finished in the number two spot, Scott Dickey came across in third but got disqualified in post-race tech moving up Andrew Schroeder to the third spot. Shawn Ritter and Todd Cooney, finished in fourth and fifth.

Next Wednesday Night is Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night and will feature, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. The Hobby Stocks will see extra $300 available to grab because of a bounty placed on Shannon Anderson in the Hobby Stocks, thanks to Edel Lawn Care, Cindy Drost and Independent Auto. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

Vince Gill Joins The Eagles for Classic East and West Festival Shows

After the passing of Glenn Frey, The Eagles were thought to be finished. Don Henley announced that the band would return with Frey’s son, Deacon Frey, stepping up to fill the vacancy.

Now it has been announced that the group will be adding another member when they take the stage at the Classic Esat and Classic West Festivals this year.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Vince Gill has joined the band, and will split vocal duties with Deacon on Glenn’s songs, as well as play guitar.

Gill has had an extraordinary career in country music and thinks his transition to rock will be easy. “In my mind, I always thought I’d have made a good Eagle,” joked Gill. “But in a million years, I never would have seen this coming. It’s pretty surreal. I turned 60 recently, and to get to be a part of this amazing legacy of songs, that’s the greatest part of all this for me.”

Gill is nos stranger to The Eagles, contributing to the Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles all-star country tribute record as well as Henley’s recent Cass County LP.

Student Has Graduation Ceremony…On The Subway

Here’s a great example of making the best of a bad situation. Jerich Marco Alcantara was all set to graduate from New York City’s Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing this week…until the subway got in his way. The graduate was on his way to the ceremony, all dressed up in his cap and gown, when he got stuck on a seriously delayed train.

His train was stuck between stations for 90-minutes before a rescue train was called. That took about 25-minutes to arrive. As if this wasn’t a bad enough commute, the rescue train stalled, too.

“Everyone seemed annoyed, and by that time, my commencement was already about an hour in,” he explains. “So I felt like lightening the mood and thanked everyone for ‘coming to my graduation.’ Told them it meant a lot to me, and they applauded it.”

A friend created a digital diploma while fellow passengers played Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).”

Italian Mayor Waters Down Hungry Tourists

If you’re planning on going to Florence, you might have to eat on the go. The city has had enough of tourists lounging, eating, and leaving a mess on cathedral steps, so they’ve come up with a plan: cleaning the steps during lunchtime.

“We’ll be experimenting with a very simple measure: pouring water over the church steps to clean the spaces, and hopefully discourage people from eating, drinking and making a mess there,” Mayor Dario Nardella explains. “If tourists want to sit there, they’ll get wet. Florence is full of cafes with outdoor seating, tables, and benches.”

Some are afraid the move will make the city come off as elitist and force tourists to pay for pricey restaurants instead of takeaway food. According to Mayor Nardella, that’s not the point. “The churches aren’t restaurants; they are religious and cultural sites,” he adds. “We’re in no way against tourists, but against those who do not respect Florence.”

Woman tries to trade her baby for Taco Bell:

One woman in Evansville, Indiana is very dedicated to her Taco Bell. According to local authorities, she tried to exchange her child for a 12-pack of tacos. It’s unclear what exactly happened to the woman, but commenters on Facebook are impressed with her creativity.

Man calls 911 just to chat:

Turns out being drunk and lonely isn’t an emergency. Larry Keiser dialed 911 and asked to speak to a police officer…who he then told there was no emergency. Keiser called 911 five more times before cops responded to his Allentown, Pennsylvania home and discovered he had been knocking back beers because he was upset about a “family situation.” Authorities explained to the 51-year-old that he shouldn’t call 911 unless there was an actual problem. Keiser said he understood…then called 911 a minute after the cops left. He’s now facing charges that include intentionally calling 911 for other than emergency purposes.

Man backs up on a highway in China:

A man in China presumably confused his fellow drivers when he not only stopped on the highway, but starting backing up. Not surprisingly, he caused multiple collisions – but in the end, was only charged the equivalent of $30. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Scholar-Athlete Award Given to LaMotte

Oskaloosa–Molly LaMotte (Sr., Enumclaw, Wash., Exercise Science) was honored for her excellence in the classroom as she was named a 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athlete Wednesday.

LaMotte owned a 3.67 Grade Point Average entering this spring. The award is the first of her career. She is among 395 softball athletes from within the NAIA to be awarded the laurel.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must be of at least junior academic standing, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, and have attended the nominating institution for at least one full academic year.

Mahaska County Man Wins $17,572.85 Progressive Jackpot Prize

CLIVE, Iowa – A Mahaska County man has claimed a $17,572.85 progressive jackpot prize.

Larry Shepherd of Fremont won the prize playing “Cherry Twist Progressive InstaPlay,” a $2 game. Cherry Twist Progressive is a progressive jackpot game where the top prize starts at $2,000 and grows with each ticket sold statewide until someone wins it.

Shepherd bought his winning ticket Friday at Casey’s, 203 E. Main St. in Fremont, and claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery’s headquarters in Clive.

InstaPlay combines features from instant-scratch and lotto games and gives players a new option with no numbers to pick, playslips to fill out or wait for a drawing. InstaPlay tickets are “scratchless” because they have no security coating that needs to be removed to determine the prize won. And rather than having supplies of tickets printed in advance like those in traditional scratch and pull-tab games, InstaPlay tickets are printed on demand from the lottery terminal, as in lotto games like Powerball^® and Mega Millions^®. On this day in 1966, filming began on The Monkees first TV series. Of the hundreds of applicants to play the “4 insane boys”, The Monkees would end up being composed of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork.

The show included improvisation, quick cuts, jump cuts, breaking the fourth wall, and free-flowing, loose narratives. Each episode contained at least one musical “romp” which sometimes had nothing to with the plot. These “romps” are very much like music videos.

Gregg Allman’s Unreleased Album Is ‘Big, Special’ According to Manager

Greg Allman passed away on May 27th at the age of 69. Though Allman left the music world, he did leave behind one final project. Allman’s upcoming album, Southern Blood, doesn’t have a set release date, but is a masterpiece, according to his manager Michael Lehman.

Though Allman was in poor health for quite some time, he continued his work on the record over the past few years.

Lehman recently told Yahoo!: “It’s composed of a bunch of really cool covers and a couple of original tunes. I can’t say much more – Gregg really wanted to keep tight, and I have to respect his wishes.

“He wanted to surprise his friends and fans. I think it’s a record that everyone’s going to be excited to hear. His vocals are so compelling. Knowing where he was on his life’s journey, it’s just chilling, honestly.

“As we knew his life was coming to a close, we started talking about preserving his legacy. It was my goal to make sure it was a big, special album. It became clear that Gregg wasn’t necessarily going to be able to promote it, even if he was here, and that was something we were prepared for.”

WWII Grenades Bought At Flea Market Explode In The Heat

Much like hairspray, you should keep your flea market grenades in a cool dry place. A 51-year-old in Hennef, Germany found that out the hard way after WWII era grenades and other weapons he bought at a flea market and stored in his garage started exploding in the summer-like heat.

An area around the man’s home, including a stretch of railway and highway, had to be evacuated and shut down as experts were brought in. In the end, the man’s entire stash was destroyed in a controlled explosion.

Now the unnamed man, who claims to have bought a “crate” of munitions, is under investigation and could face weapons law violations.

Newborn Starts Walking Minutes After Leaving The Womb

Every parent thinks their kid is special, but trying to walk minutes out the womb? That seems remarkable. Video has surfaced from a hospital in southern Brazil seemingly showing a newborn trying to walk as a doctor holds under her arms.

In the clip, the baby is seen taking steps as amazed nurses and doctors look on. It turns out this isn’t as rare as it seems, though. This is an example of the baby girl’s nervous system kicking into gear. Called the “walking” or “stepping reflex,” an infant loses the instinct after two months then gets it back at about a year-old when they learn to walk for good.

Doctors Remove Pen Cap From Man’s Lung Decades After He Inhaled It

You’d think if you had inhaled a pen cap as a kid, that memory would stick with you. Not for a man in China, who is only identified by his surname Wang. In case you missed it, Mr. Wang went to the hospital after he began coughing up blood. It was then doctors discovered, and Wang remembered, he has had a pen cap lodged in his lung for the last 20 years.

Surgeons were able to remove the half-dissolved pen cap, which it turns out had caused Wang medical issues his whole life. He says despite having lung infections and a chronic cough, he hadn’t connected the dots.

Subway performer attacked with his own hula hoop:

Jean Loup Wolfman is a subway performer in New York City, which means he’s seen a lot. Even still, when he witnessed a dance group threatening an elderly couple at the Union Square station after they didn’t leave a tip, Wolfman stepped in to try and calm the situation down. That’s when the trio of dancers started chasing their fellow subway performer and when they caught him – even allegedly Wolfman’s own hula hoop in the assault! So far, a 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault, which left Wolfman requiring stitches and staples. Our subway hero won’t be stopped, however. Wolfman says he would do it again to help someone in need.

Woman bites off part of son-in-law’s finger:

This’ll make Thanksgiving a little more complicated. A Munich woman allegedly bit off part of her son-in-law’s finger – and she’s not the bag guy in this story! The 35-year-old man allegedly told his 52-year-old mother-in-law that he wanted to kill her. Then, things got physical when he grabbed her by the neck and ripped off her necklace. The unnamed man reportedly punched her in the face – and then choked her with both of his hands. In retaliation, the woman bit his finger. The cops were called and sided with the mom, arresting her daughter’s husband. Speaking of the daughter – there’s no word yet on if divorce papers are also a part of this equation.

Man caught with marijuana in his car has the exact mug shot you’d expect:

Selket Taylor, a 27-year-old from Danville, New Hampshire, was pulled over for using his cell phone while driving. That’s when cops found a bag of pot in his cup holder. Taylor told police he “only smokes it in Massachusetts,” but that wasn’t enough for officers. Taylor was charged with possession of a controlled drug, transporting a controlled drug in a motor vehicle and use of an electronic mobile device. The best part? He decided to take a ridiculous mugshot, which you can check out on the Bob’s Morning Brew facebook page.

Iowa Kids Raise Collapsed Shed Roof, Drag Dad to Safety

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — A central Iowa man is expressing a special pride in his children, who rescued him from under the roof of a shed that collapsed on him.

Matt Gannaway and his children had started to take down a wobbly old shed Tuesday morning at his mother’s Marshalltown home when the shed roof fell, pinning him to the ground and knocking him unconscious.

His children sprang in to action. His 13-year-old, Ethan, called 911. Then he and 9-year-old Addison and 11-year-old Payton lifted the roof high enough that Payton could drag her dad to safety as firefighters and medics arrived.

Gannaway suffered a broken shoulder blade and some facial cuts. He told the Marshalltown Times-Republican that when he heard his kids had saved him, “I couldn’t have had a prouder moment.”

On this day in 1968, The Beatles began recording what would become their ninth studio album, The Beatles, also known as The White Album. The album was the first Beatles record to be released on the Apple label.

The Beatles achieved huge success in the US, selling 3.3 million copies in its first four days. It spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart.

The Beatles has since become the most certified album for the group, becoming 19x Platinum.
