On this day in 1966, filming began on The Monkees first TV series. Of the hundreds of applicants to play the “4 insane boys”, The Monkees would end up being composed of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork.
The show included improvisation, quick cuts, jump cuts, breaking the fourth wall, and free-flowing, loose narratives. Each episode contained at least one musical “romp” which sometimes had nothing to with the plot. These “romps” are very much like music videos.
