Local Brewery Lands Gold, Bronze Medals for ‘Best of Craft Beer’

(Oskaloosa, IA)–NoCoast Beer Co. is leaving its mark in the craft beer world. Just over a year after opening its doors, NoCoast is competing against some of the top breweries in the world and winning medals.

NoCoast entered its Trend Bucker Dry Stout, Low Brow Brown Ale and Hooper’s Rye Barrel Aged Porter in the 2018 Best of Craft Beer Awards. It competed against 2,000 entries from breweries of all sizes throughout the United States, as well as Colombia, Canada and Belgium. Top brewers from around the world sent in their best product to be judged on a combined 156 beer styles.

Out of the 2,000 entries only 245 medals were awarded, and NoCoast took home three of them. NoCoast’s Trend Bucker Stout took home the gold in the Export Stout category. The Hooper’s Rye Barrel Aged Porter won a bronze medal in the Wood- and Barrel-Aged Dark Beer category, and the Low Brow Brown Ale won a bronze medal in the English-Style Mild Ale or Brown Ale category.

The Best of Craft Beer Awards just completed its 5th year of competition and is considered the third largest professional brewing competition in the country.

Oskaloosa Boys Bounce Back with Big Win Over Chariton

The Oskaloosa Boys’ Basketball team got back on the right track with a huge 90-59 victory over Chariton on Tuesday night.

The Indians got off to a quick 12-0 start and it was all coasting from there as they posted 90 points in a game for the first time since December 5th.

Cole Henry led the way for the Indians with 27 points. He also added 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Jarad Kruse had a rough night on Monday against Indianola but bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, posting 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Xavier Foster was also a big factor for Osky, pouring in 19 points with 9 boards, 5 dimes, 1 steal, and 2 blocked shots.

Oskaloosa finishes the regular season 18-3 overall. They will enter postseason play on Monday, February 19th. They will be hosting a doubleheader which includes Bondurant-Farrar playing Knoxville at 6:30 and then the Indians take on Saydel in the first round of Substate 6 action.

The Oskaloosa girls have their first playoff game Wednesday night on the road at Knoxville as they look to pull an upset and get into the regional semifinals. Oskaloosa Stumbles in Hoops Losses at Indianola

The Oskaloosa Basketball teams were in action but had a rough night against hot Indianola squads Monday night. The girls lost 78-28 against the #10 Class 5A team in the state while the boys blew a 13 point second half lead and fell 61-52.

The boys had a solid start with plenty of energy and strong defense in the first two quarters. Cole Henry and Xavier Foster had it going early, leading the Indians to a 29-20 halftime advantage.

Osky would score two quick buckets in the third to go up 33-20 with around 7:15 left in the 3rd quarter when Indianola Head Coach Brett Watson called a timeout. From then on, it was different game.

Indianola would close the third on a 21-6 run and got some excellent play on both ends of the floor from junior guard Quinn Vesey. Indianola would be challenged by Osky throughout the fourth, but Evan Gauger would take the game over for the home team and hit several free throws late to ice the game. The final score ended up 61-52 with Indianola getting the win.

Indianola has home wins over Norwalk and Osky this season, the only team to beat either team in the Little Hawkeye Conference. With the loss, Oskaloosa settles for a share of the Little Hawkeye Conference regular season title with Norwalk, as they both sit at 12-2 in conference play.

Osky was led by Cole Henry, who had an outstanding game with 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists, all team highs. Spencer Tucker was also in double figures with 12 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Xavier Foster was quiet after a strong first quarter, finishing with 8 points and 4 rebounds. Jarad Kruse never got going for the Indians, scoring just 3 points with 5 boards.

Gauger led the way for Indianola with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and a block in a fantastic effort. Vesey chipped in 16 big points as well. Indianola is now 13-7 on the season and finish 8-6 in the LHC.

The Osky Boys fall to 17-3 on the year and finish the regular season at home against Chariton Tuesday night. You can view that game live on radiokmzn.com or MCG Channel 7. There will be no audio of the broadcast. The beginning of the game will be shortly after 7:30 PM.

The Osky girls’ wrapped up the regular season with a very tough matchup against Indianola, who are ranked #10 in Class 5A. It was a runaway from the start, with Indianola winning 78-28. There were some good moments from Oskaloosa, however, as Mary Nelson hit a couple threes to lead the way and finished with 10 points.

Osky finishes the regular season 0-21 and 0-14 in the Little Hawkeye. Indianola finishes their year 18-3 overall and an unblemished 14-0 in the LHC.

Mini-Golfers Unite for Oskaloosa Winter Open

(Oskaloosa, Iowa)–Miniature golf can relieve stress, create lasting memories for couples and families, as well as provide entertainment for people of all ages. However, for mini golfers looking to participate in the upcoming Oskaloosa Winter Open, the sport is more than just fun and games. It’s also about helping others.

United Way of Mahaska County has partnered with 14 local non-profits to host the 7^th Annual Oskaloosa Winter Open later this month. On Feb. 23-24, golfers will step up to putt a miniature golf course inside Penn Central Mall. According to a news release from United Way of Mahaska County, each hole will feature a partner agency and business sponsor. Proceeds from the benefit will go to 2018 United Way of Mahaska County partner agencies.

With two days of mini-golfing on the books, there will be a variety of playing opportunities for both young golfers and adult golfers alike. The Oskaloosa Winter Open will kick off at noon on Friday, Feb. 23, featuring a “lunch tournament” where teams of two can compete for prizes, followed by lunch from Hy-Vee in Oskaloosa. According to the news release, the course will be open to all community members in an open play setting from 1:30-6:00 PM.

Day One of the Oskaloosa Winter Open will conclude with an “adult night” from 6:00-8:00 PM. Adult night participants must be at least 21-years-old to purchase a ticket, which includes Tassel Ridge Wine and NoCoast beer.

On Saturday morning, the course will open again for Day Two at 10:00 AM and participants may take part in open play until 5:00 PM. However, at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, children ages 6-18 will be entered into a youth tournament, with prizes for the winners of each age bracket.

Oskaloosa Boys’ Basketball Defeat Pella, Celebrate Conference Title

The Oskaloosa basketball teams were in action Tuesday and on a night where all of the seniors were honored, there were nets cut down to celebrate at least a share of a conference title.

The Osky boys got the job done with a 65-56 win over their archrival Pella at home after a stiff test from the Little Dutch. The Osky girls had moments when they played well, but a couple of sustained runs by Pella allowed the Lady Dutch to win going away, 70-32.

The boys’ game was tight throughout, as the nine-point margin that Osky would win by was the largest for either team.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that saw both teams score 14 points, Pella would jump out to a 33-26 lead with a couple of minutes left in the second. Oskaloosa would close the half strong, however. After a couple of buckets and a late turnover, Osky’s Cole Henry would nail a buzzer beating three to cap a 10-0 run that gave Osky a 36-33 halftime edge.

In the third, the Indians would increase the lead to as many as seven, but Pella bounced back. Ryan Gustafson hit a three that punctuated a Dutch run that saw them take a 47-46 lead late in the 3^rd. Another Osky buzzer beater, this time from Jarad Kruse, put Osky back in front heading to the fourth.

The last quarter proved to be Osky’s, as down the stretch baskets by Spencer Tucker and Xavier Foster helped give the Indians some breathing room. The team was 10 for 10 at the free throw line in the game and that, along with some defensive stops, helped ice the nine-point win.

The Indians were led by Jarad Kruse, who celebrated Senior Night with 21 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and was a perfect five-for-five in free throws. Fellow senior Spencer Tucker went for 15 points and 4 assists while Cole Henry added 14 points and a game-high 6 assists.

Pella also had a trio in double figures with Ryan Gustafson leading the way with 15. Nick DeJong had 14 with 6 boards and sophomore guard Logan Shetterly added 12 points with 5 dimes.

With the victory, Oskaloosa knew they had at least a share of the Little Hawkeye Conference title and were waiting on the final score from Newton as the Cardinals hosted Norwalk. Norwalk would eventually come from 20 points down to win in a thrilling triple-overtime game, 107-104, which keeps their hopes alive for sharing the LHC title with the Indians.

That would require an Osky loss on the road at Indianola on Friday while the Warriors need a win as they host Grinnell. Either way, the Indians can claim a conference title in boys’ basketball for the first time since 1996 when they were in the South Central Conference.

Oskaloosa will enter that contest at Indianola 17-2 on the year and 12-1 in the LHC. Pella falls to 10-9 on the year and 5-8 in conference action.

The girls’ game featured Pella sprinting out to a 15-0 lead with several steals with their full-court pressure and getting easy transition layups. Oskaloosa would battle throughout the game and go toe-to-toe with Pella for moments in the first half, but were unable to overcome the poor start. Pella cruised to the finish with a 70-32 victory.

Oskaloosa was led by Marleigh Denburger, who had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and one block.

Emily Holterhaus was dominant for the Lady Dutch with 29 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 steals.

Osky is now 0-20 on the year and 0-13 in conference play while Pella is 13-7 overall and 7-6 in the LHC.

The next game for Oskaloosa is Friday night as they face Indianola in the last doubleheader of the season. Offbeat News: A Missing Vacation Home, Stupid Criminals, & More

A Houston couple is reporting their vacation home missing. Jo and Lonnie Harrison say their one-bedroom cabin is missing from the property they own in Madisonville. It’s being reported that they’re likely victims of alleged financial issues of the prior owner.

The prefabricated home was on property they purchased last year. The couple reportedly hadn’t checked on the property since November. When Lonnie recently returned, the house was gone with just pipes and blocks remaining.

Sgt. Larry Shiver says the couple is most likely victims of misrepresentation of the property when they bought it. Investigators are seeking the previous owner amid concerns the structure was repossessed and not stolen.

Aldi customer Pat Bateman was shocked to find half a frozen rat in a package of frozen vegetables bought from the store. What’s more awful is she had already ate more than half the bag and even fed some to her two-year-old granddaughter. Bateman complained to the store, which offered her around $40 for the incident. She was not happy enough and took her complaints to corporate, which offered nearly $700, but she still felt entitled to more. An investigation is reportedly under way and Aldi has removed the product from sale.

Doritos has revealed plans for a new “lady-friendly” version for the chip. It will be much quieter to eat and a lot less messy. The global chief executive, Indra Nooyi says that, “women would love to crunch loudly and lick their fingers… but prefer not to do this in public.” The packaging for the chip will even be small enough to fit in women’s hand bags. Of course this received tons of backlash from women’s groups who consider the move as a “tired stereotype.”

STUPID CRIMINALS:

LAPD officers arrest a driver after finding burritos in his car with one unusual ingredient… meth. According to Fox, to the untrained eye, the foil packages look a lot like burritos, but take a closer look and its definitely drugs. Police found them during a routine traffic stop and also confiscated a gun and a huge sum of money. The driver was arrested on suspicion of transportation of narcotics.
A number of incidents heard on Philly police scanners after the Super Bowl have been released and some are downright ridiculous. Dozens of calls poured in citing masses of people climbing buildings and poles, flipping cars, and throwing bottles chanting “Meek Mill.” One man even landed in custody claiming to be an off-duty cop and another was caught jumping on top of a fire truck. One person even flew his drone over head to capture the crazy footage.
Joshua Walker was taken into custody after reportedly stealing his mother’s car and breaking into her family business. Somehow, the man evaded deputies for several hours and when found, he only had on the handcuffs and pink boxers.

Mahaska Amateur Radio Club Swapmeet

The Mahaska Amateur Radio Club will host it’s 30th annual Amateur Radio Swapmeet, on Saturday march 17, 2018. It will be held at the American Legion Hall located at 302 high avenue east ( which is one block south of highway 92 and one block east of the town square). It will run from 8:00 am until about 11:30 am. Admission is by donation, Tables may be rented for $5.00 each. There is usually used Amateur Radio equipment and accessories, used computer equipment and accessories, and occasionally a CB radio or two for sale. Soda, coffee, water, and doughnuts will be available. Oskaloosa Boys Survive Scare From Newton

The Oskaloosa basketball teams hosted Newton on Tuesday night and the two games were decided by a nail-biting five points combined. The Osky boys survived a late Newton rally by winning, 57-56, while the Indian girls battled but ultimately fell, 28-24.

The boys’ game was one where Osky hoped to get a more comfortable win after outlasting Newton in a tight 56-53 game on the road in December. But Garrett Sturtz and his All-State caliber resume would not go quietly into the Oskaloosa night.

The game was very back and forth from the start, with Newton closing the first quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 12-10 lead. In the second quarter, Osky’s offense got going and a buzzer beater layup by Cole Henry gave the Indians a 30-27 lead at the half.

After the break, things got sloppy as both teams struggled mightily to score points. Sturtz would eventually draw his fourth foul, which all came on charges offensively. Unfortunately, Osky was unable to take advantage of Sturtz being off the floor as they only increased their lead to 37-32 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The fourth was the exact opposite, as both teams lit up the gym for a combined 44 points. Many of those came from Sturtz, who would score 22 of the 24 Newton points down the stretch. Oskaloosa would counter with Spencer Tucker scoring six points late including two free throws after the Newton bench was assessed a technical foul.

As the game wore on, Sturtz got a three-point play to cut the Osky lead to one and Rian Yates was fouled by the Cardinals with just under 10 seconds to play. After Newton called a timeout to ice the shooter, Yates missed the front end of the 1-and-1 opportunity, allowing Newton a chance to win. Sturtz drove down the floor but picked up his dribble at the three-point line and pump faked. The Oskaloosa defense didn’t bite as Sturtz attempted a tough leaning shot to draw a foul. There was no whistle, and the Indians survived.

Oskaloosa got 18 points and 5 rebounds from both Cole Henry and Jarad Kruse who were vital pieces to the Osky puzzle. Spencer Tucker also was in double figures with 10 points and added 7 assists.

Sturtz led the way for the Cardinals with an impressive 42 points to go with 9 rebounds. He shot 13 for 14 from the free throw line. In two games against Oskaloosa, the Newton senior scored a combined 86 points.

With the win, the top-ranked Indians move to 16-1 overall and 11-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Newton falls to 9-6 overall and 5-6 in the LHC.

The girls’ game was equally entertaining from a competitive standpoint, as the Osky girls mounted a comeback from 14 points down to put plenty of pressure on Newton.

Marleigh Denburger, Oskaloosa’s leading scorer coming into the game, was saddled with foul trouble throughout the first half and the Cardinals built up a 22-8 halftime lead. But the Indians chipped away to head to the fourth down 27-20.

The fourth quarter saw Newton employ a stalling strategy to limit Osky’s possessions. This resulted in a slow quarter pace-wise, and forced Oskaloosa to pressure the ball as time went on. Unfortunately, the Indians couldn’t find buckets on their end to complete the comeback while Newton struggled to ice the game from the free throw line.

After the smoke cleared, Newton was outscored in a poor shooting fourth period, 4-1, but held on to beat Osky, 28-24.

Marleigh Denburger, Lindsey Holmberg, and Mary Nelson all had 6 points for Osky in the game. Nelson also had 8 rebounds. Emma Kelderman had a solid game despite going scoreless with 7 boards and 3 assists. Holmberg had 3 steals on the defensive end.

Newton was led by Taylor Ryan, who scored 8 points off the bench, all in the first half. Anna Forsyth was the engine for Newton, scoring 6 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and getting 3 steals while serving as the lead guard for the Cardinals. Marcelina Marvelli had 5 points and 4 steals and Ali Bestell had 5 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks for Newton.

Osky is now 0-18 on the year and 0-11 in the Little Hawkeye. Newton snapped a ten-game losing streak and are now 4-15 overall and 2-9 in the conference with both wins coming against Oskaloosa.

Osky has a big doubleheader on Friday on the road at Norwalk. The Indian boys dominated a very good Norwalk team early in January and the Warriors will be looking to return the favor in a matchup of highly ranked teams. The girls’ game should also be competitive as Norwalk has struggled in conference play.
