House Fire In Washington

On January 20^th, 2017 at approximately 4:20 AM the Washington County Communications Center received multiple reports of a house fire at 609 East Washington Street in Washington. The callers reported that the top level of the house was fully engulfed in flames and that someone was possibly inside the residence. Washington Fire Department personnel were dispatched along with the Ainsworth Fire Department and Washington County Ambulance. One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted. The name of the victim is being withheld and will be released at a later time. The cause of the fire is undetermined and is currently under investigation. Further information will be released as it becomes available. Also responding to the scene were personnel from the Washington Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Alliant Energy.

William Penn Men and Women Ranked in Top 25

Oskaloosa–With more than half of their seasons completed, the Statesmen bowling teams are right where they need to be to qualify for the postseason.

The men are currently ranked #17 with five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a pair of runner-up efforts. Nick Walker (So., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management) is leading the men’s charge with a 205.9 average in 43 games; the sophomore has five top-25 showings (one top-10). Stian Hoff (Sr., Orkanger, Norway, General Accounting) is next for the navy and gold at a 201.6 clip (40 games) with one top-10 effort.

On the women’s side, WPU is #21 with five top-10 finishes (high of third). The Statesmen are led by Bailey Palmer (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) with a 193.0 average in 44 games. Palmer has five top-25 performances, highlighted by three top-10s. Stephanie Adams (Sr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) is also doing well with a 188.5 mark in 38 games; she has three top-25 finishes (twice in the top 10).

William Penn travels to Addison, Ill. Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic.

Man Runs 1,300 Miles In London Alone

Costin Boldisor loves going for a jog, but after his usual trips around London, he got bored. That’s when he decided to take on the entire town.

So far, he’s run 13-hundred miles, covering almost 5000 of the city’s roads. What’s more, taking this new approach made him look forward to going out for a jog. “I really enjoyed running more than I was before, it got me out far more and meant I could explore new places,” Boldisor explains. “Sometimes I meant to run eight or nine miles and ended up doing 13. I was running like it was a game, almost like Pokemon, and it made it much easier.”

Not impressed yet? The 32-year-old computer developer even created an app, Open Street Map, to help keep track of his previous runs and mark new routes. Boldisor hopes to release the app to the public soon.

Woman Buys An Egg Online, Ends Up With A Pet Emu

Who needs a dog or cat when you can have a pet emu! Charlotte Harrison bought an emu egg online for $30 and spent 47 days nurturing and incubating the egg. Now, her whole family as a new friend: Kevin.

“Having coaxed him through the birth, I feel so protective of Kevin,” Harrison explains. “I think it’s because I nurtured him through incubation to hatching and the process has similarities to pregnancy. The feeling’s mutual, he dotes on me and follows me around the house as though I’m his mother.”

The mother-of-three explains the “placid” bird loves snuggling up or playing with her children’s toys. At the moment, Kevin is about a foot-tall. Harrison figures they’ll have to move the bird outdoors when he reaches his full grown size of six-fret. For now, he’s an indoor emu.

Woman Claims She’s Allergic To WiFi, Now Lives In A Shed

For most us, finding WiFi is a godsend. For Rachel Hinks, it’s a nightmare. The British woman claims she suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity…or, a WiFi allergy.

She claims to suffer violent shakes, burning rashes and headaches when she’s exposed to electromagnetic fields and because of her illness, she’s given up her job and home and now lives in a shed.

Hinks admits she suffers from Lupus as well, but thinks that her weakened immune systems means she may be alone in her WiFi allergy, but not for long. As she puts it, “What if I’m one of the first to suffer from these symptoms because of my weak immune system, but in a couple hundred years who knows how much more advanced technology will be and how many more people will be suffering as a result of it?”

As of now, the World Health Organization doesn’t recognize electromagnetic hypersensitivity as a valid diagnosis.

UPDATE: Woman gets jail time for biting a cop’s ear:

Here’s a life lesson – if you bite part of a cop’s ear off, you’re going to spend some time behind bars. As we previously reported, Emma Wiley bit off piece of a officer’s ear during a scuffle following a bar fight in Salem, Massachusetts. Now, the 19-year-old has been sentenced to four years in jail, two-and-a-half years for mayhem and one-and-a-half for assault and battery on a police officer.

ICYMI: Man arrested for his 14th drunk driving arrest:

If nothing else, Zenon Bialokur is predicable. The 54-year-old was arrested in Macomb County, Michigan on a drunk driving charge. Well, actually, it was his 14th DUI. As if that weren’t enough, Bialokur also has 10 convictions for driving with a suspended license and 12 “current suspensions of his driving privilege” on his record. He’s now facing felony drunk driving, driving without a license, and possessing “open intoxicants” in a motor vehicle charges.

Someone stole 488 beehives:

Someone stole 488 beehives in Yuba City, California. That’s right, beehives. Lloyd Cunniff says 190,000-plus bees were taken along with their homes overnight, leaving him without income for a year. Now he only has one hive left with about 400 bees. Law enforcement is investigating. Meanwhile Cunniff is dealing with the insurance company. So if you happen to be near Yuba City, listen for a buzzing truck.

On this day in 1988, The Beatles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. George Harrison, Ringo Starr were the only Beatles to attend. Yoko, Sean, and Julian Lennon all attended for John Lennon Posthumously. Paul McCartney did not attend, sending instead a letter stating that continuing business differences with the other ex-Beatles was the reason for his absence.

Heart’s Nancy Wilson Officially Announces Roadcase Royale

Heart‘s Nancy Wilson is taking some time off this year from the band, and she’s starting up a new project, Roadcase Royale.

The group finds Wilson and a trio of Heart vets — keyboardist Chris Joyner, bassist Dan Rothchild and drummer Ben Smith — working alongside former Prince vocalist Liv Warfield and lead guitarist Ryan Waters to produce what a press release promises is “muscular rock with some R&B/Blues and in depth ballads thrown in.”

Wilson has stressed that this band isn’t replacing Heart, but is excited to take this band as far as it can go.

“When I came up with the name Roadcase Royale, it was an interesting symbol to me,” said Wilson. “The big heavy-duty road cases that our amps, drums, and guitars travel in are much like the musicians they accompany on the road — strong and regal looking, yet all scuffed up and dented, covered in funny stickers that tell the story of a crazy traveling circus.”

Roadcase Royale’s debut single, “Get Loud,” leads off a promised EP’s worth of new material that’s set to arrive in conjunction with tour dates.

Paul McCartney Files Suit to Get the Beatles’ Songs Back

Paul McCartney is suing Sony in an effort to reclaim the copyright of The Beatles catalog that he lost in a sale to Michael Jackson.

Sony/ATV completed purchase of this cache of legendary tunes last year, just before McCartney became eligible to reassert partial ownership again based on a provision of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976. Since then, Sony/ATV has apparently ignored McCartney’s requests to discuss a future transfer.

“Paul McCartney has today filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York against Sony/ATV to confirm his ownership in his U.S. reversionary copyrights – which are granted to him by U.S. copyright law – in the songs he wrote with John Lennon and recorded with the Beatles,” a McCartney spokesperson said.

According to the Copyright Act, tracks written before 1978 – which include all of the Beatles’ output – revert back to the composers after 56 years. His earliest work with Lennon would become available in 2018, then continue reverting yearly through the anniversary of the Beatles’ dissolution in 2025.

Five In Double Figures As WPU Drops Mount Mercy 94-87

Cedar Rapids–The Statesmen and the Mustangs faced off in some memorable meetings in the old Midwest Collegiate Conference and it appears that tradition is going to continue in the Heart of America Athletic Conference as William Penn defeated Mount Mercy on the road 94-87 Wednesday.

#4 WPU (15-2, 11-2 Heart) outshot the Mustangs (10-7, 9-5 Heart) 53.4%-40.6% and had five players in double figures and it still was almost not enough to end MMU’s three-game winning streak. William Penn, which has now claimed four straight, finished the season sweep of Mount Mercy to stay one game up on Grand View in the league race.

The visitors trailed just once at 12-11, and despite holding a lead of 11 midway through the second half, they were not out of the woods until the final ticks.

The Statesmen hit 59.4% of their first-half attempts to own a 54-48 advantage. The margin grew to double digits inside of 10 minutes to go, but the Mustangs rallied to knot things up at 74-74 with 5:51 remaining. Fortunately, WPU had an answer by ripping off seven in a row. The squad then kept the hosts at bay in the waning minutes to record the victory.

The Statesmen held a 37-36 edge in rebounding, but were outscored 9-5 in second-chance points. On the flip side, the team committed two more turnovers (18-16) than MMU, yet managed a 10-0 mark in points off turnovers. The charity stripe was not kind to William Penn as it went 22-for-36, while Mount Mercy stayed in the contest at 26-for-29.

Jarvis Haywood (Sr., Charlotte, N.C., Business Management) guided the victors with 23 points, including three three-pointers and an 8-for-9 effort at the line. William Penn finished 10-for-17 from deep overall.

An injury in late November slowed down Kevin Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md., Physical Education) after a great start to his senior year, but Wednesday he showed that he might be back to his old self with 16 points and seven assists.

Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) was next with 15 points, while Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) managed 14 points and three blocks.

Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) contributed six points Wednesday.

“Winning at Mount Mercy is a great accomplishment; that is a tough place to win,” Head Coach John Henry said. “Our backcourt was special again tonight with Lionel, Jarvis, and Kevin all playing really well.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. Saturday to face Central Methodist in Heart action at 4 p.m.

Python Plays Mom To Four Stranded Puppies

Animal activists rescued four puppies that had fallen down an 80-foot well in Vadodara, India and saw the pups had made a strange friend…a six-foot-long python.

“We saw that a python was seated with four puppies (in the well). They were there for four days,” one of the people on the scene said. “The python could have eaten the puppies but it didn’t harm them, instead kept them safe and gave a mother’s love.”

The snake was released back into the wild and the pups were returned to their actual mother.

Foreclosed Mall Sells For $100

At one point, Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills was worth $190-million. Since then, the 1.1-million-square-foot mall has fallen off track, most recently appraised for $11-million. The low amount isn’t surprising considering at the time only half of the store spaces were occupied.

The mall went into foreclosure after failing to pay back a $143-million loan and in the end, someone was able to buy it for just $100.

You Can Buy A Political Movement Now

Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, you might want to do some extra research before joining any movement. The website Demand Protest claims they can manufacture a political movement.

The site claims they keep their clients private, but will “create scenes that sway public opinion.” They also offer to “expertly shape political, corporate, or public health perceptions.”

Since they keep their clients under wraps, it’s impossible to know how successful they are, but Demand Protest claims to have worked on 48 campaigns and have over 18-hundred “operatives” working for them. The site also offers testimonials from an “unnamed 2016 presidential campaign” and an “unnamed fund management.”

Driver speeding through a snowstorm claims she was going to get a new stereo:

It’s never a smart idea to speed, but when it’s snowing, that’s definitely a time you should stick to the speed limit. Anastacia Hocking figured it was more important to be on time than drive safely, though. The 21-year-old told police she was driving 91 mph because she was late for an appointment to have a new car stereo installed. She’s now facing a reckless driving charge. There’s no word on whether or not she got that new stereo, but let’s hope there’s better weather for her court date in March.

Man dressed as a beer bottle wanted in pizza theft:

A man dressed as a beer bottle walked into a Papa Johns in Wales on New Years Day and walked out without paying for his two pizzas. He was caught on security camera and local authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the man.

Pot smoker calls police when his drugs don’t arrive:

Betty Tamihana paid a dealer $40 for what was advertised as an ounce of marijuana. When the Hamilton, Australia woman realized she’d been stiffed, she called the cops. Over drugs. Tamihana thought she couldn’t be charged with anything because she never got her drugs. She was wrong. As police explained, “there is a charge of attempting to procure a drug.” It’s unclear what exactly authorities charged her with, if anything.

Rogers Officer of the Year 2016

The Oskaloosa Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Austin Rogers has been selected as the Oskaloosa Police Department’s 2016 Officer of the Year.

Officer Rogers began his career with the Oskaloosa Police Department in March 2015 and has worked as a patrol officer since joining the Department. Officer Rogers was selected because of his tremendous work ethic, professionalism, and compassion for his job and community. Officer Rogers has a passion to always give his very best no matter what the situation and always strives to go above and beyond the duty requirements.
