OACDG Scholarship applications available

The Oskaloosa Area Chamber & Development Group is happy to announce that scholarships will again be available through its Chamber Scholars program, now in its 21st year.

High school seniors living in Mahaska County and attending any high school are eligible to apply. Pick up an application from your school counselor, from the Oskaloosa Area Chamber office or at www.oacdg.org. Scholarships will be offered in the amounts of $500 and up, and are sponsored by area businesses and industries. Last year $9,000 was distributed to 18 students. There were 29 applications from Mahaska County students from several different schools.

The application requests such information as participation in school and community activities, as well as a short essay. Typed Chamber Scholars applications and school transcripts are due at the Chamber no later than Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

“Businesses and individuals are encouraged to contribute to the scholarship fund as well. Each year we’ve maintained our level of giving. This year we would like to increase this level. It’s important to support our youth and make it easier for them to attend college,” stated Deb Bruxvoort of the OACDG. “Perhaps you can contribute financially to the fund, or perhaps participate in the annual OACDG Golf outing set for Friday, May 12. The golf outing raises additional funds for scholarships.”

Bob Dylan Releasing A New Three-CD Set, ‘Triplicate’

Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature last year and is following that up with a three-CD project, Triplicate, that consists almost entirely of songs recorded by Frank Sinatra.

The album includes 30 songs that are divided thematically over the course of three discs. Standards like “September of My Years,” “Stormy Weather,” “As Time Goes By,” “The Best Is Yet to Come” and “Stardust” are featured. The discs are titled ‘Til the Sun Goes Down, Devil Dolls and Comin’ Home Late.

Triplicate will be released as three CDs, a three-LP vinyl set, a deluxe vinyl limited-edition package in a numbered case and digitally, and is available for pre-order now.

Oskaloosa Girls Receive Home Playoff Game in Regional Pairing

The regional pairing for the Oskaloosa girls’ basketball team came out on Monday afternoon, and the Indians should be excited with the draw.

Oskaloosa will get to host the first round of Class 4A Region 8 against Bondurant-Farrar on Wednesday, February 15^th, at 7 PM.

Although the Indians are just 2-14 on the season, they should be considered the favorite against Bondurant-Farrar, as B-F has a winless record of 0-17 this year. They only have one senior and one junior on the varsity roster, and are relying heavily on large freshman and sophomore classes.

While Oskaloosa is only focusing on that home matchup with B-F, #4 Pella is waiting in the semifinals after being awarded a bye.

The Lady Dutch have been #1 all season until this week, and despite being 13-4 on the year, it could be said they haven’t quite found their groove. Pella will play the winner of Osky and B-F at home on Saturday, February 18^th, at 7 PM.

On the other side, #11 Ballard (12-4) received a bye. They’ll face either ADM (6-11) or Harlan (5-9) in the semifinals at home.

William Penn Beats Baker In Double-Overtime

Oskaloosa–William Penn again had big troubles with Baker, but this time around the Statesmen men’s basketball team produced just enough positive plays over 50 minutes of action to come away with a 95-93 double-overtime victory in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.

The fourth-ranked Statesmen (18-2, 14-2 Heart) improved to 2-0 in overtime games this year (four straight, dating back to last year) and matched their longest winning streak of the campaign at seven.

The hosts, who fell to BU 88-85 in Kansas back in November, looked like revenge would come easy as they stormed out to a 46-32 halftime advantage.

Unfortunately, Baker roared out of the locker room and scored at will in the second stanza. The Wildcats tied the score at 59-59 at the 10:23 mark and then expanded their own lead to as much as seven at 73-66 with 4:55 remaining in regulation.

The Statesmen finally caught enough traction on both ends and knotted the game at 76-76 with 2:33 to go. Baker recaptured the edge at 80-79 in the final minute, but could not add to the margin in the waning seconds. That left the door open for the Statesmen and Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) was fouled with only eight seconds left. He knocked down one of two shots to tie the game at 80-80 and the defense denied a pair of close-range BU shots to force overtime.

Fouls began to mount late in the regulation and into overtime, forcing both sides to go deep into their benches as a total of six players (three on each team) fouled out. The home squad held the largest lead of the initial extra session at three when Kevin Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md., Physical Education) picked the pocket of a Baker player and went the distance. He missed his fast-break layup, but Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) was right there for the putback, making it 87-84 with 24 ticks remaining.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats answered with a three-point play only a few seconds later. Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology), who was one of three Statesmen with a double-double, had a chance to get WPU back on top, but his layup was just short, and Baker’s desperation heave misfired and a second OT ensued.

WPU was either tied or in the lead during all but 14 seconds of the latter overtime and likely could have iced the game had it not struggled so mightily at the line. Ahead three with 13 seconds left, the Statesmen missed their final three free throws (31-for-49 overall), while Baker hit one on their end to close to within two at 95-93. The last William Penn miss, with 5.6 seconds on the clock, was pulled down by the Wildcats but they were unable to get the ball ahead with ease and had to settle for a near half-court launch that caught the rafters, allowing William Penn to survive.

The squad will not have much time to relish the win as it is headed for a big matchup in Des Moines on Monday as the Statesmen take on second place Grand View at 7:30 p.m. WPU is 1.5 games up on the Vikings.

The navy and gold won despite being outshot 40.6%-36.4%. WPU did outrebound BU 52-50, including a 16-9 offensive mark which was good for an 18-11 edge in second-chance points. The victors also committed six fewer turnovers (13-19), but the Wildcats actually managed to outscore the Statesmen 16-12 in points off mistakes.

Jones had the best overall performance with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Knowles was next with a near double-double of 18 points and eight rebounds. Ellison, with 14 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals, and Smith, with 12 points and 10 rebounds, were not denied double-doubles however.

Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) tallied eight points and Jeremy Postell (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) added five more.

“Our fans really helped in the win today,” Head Coach John Henry said. “We struggled most of the game, but the crowd was loud and electric. I want to thank them all so much.”

“Chuck (Charles Knowles) is having a great senior season; I am very happy and proud of him,” Henry added.

State Senator Needed A Raise, Switches Parties

Queens state Senator, Jose Peralta, made the announcement that he’s joining the Independent Democratic Conference, which is aligned with the GOP. But according to sources, his real cause for leaving the party is because he needs a bigger paycheck.

Apparently, Peralta owes between $20,000 and $50,000 on Citibank and AT&T cards, between $5,000 and $20,000 on a car loan for a Mercedes, and more. By switching his political loyalties, he’s set himself up to get a new position and a stipend of up to $27,500.

D.C. spokeswoman, Candice Giove, said Democrats are “fleeing the Senate Democratic Conference because of its failed leadership, not finances.”

Principal Hides Disruptive Students In Trailer

Rachelle Legions, the principal of PS 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, appears to have gone overboard in order to earn her school a better quality review. During the last two visits from the district superintendent, Legions allegedly gathered students she thought were the most disruptive and hid them in a trailer in the schoolyard.

The kids were said to be stashed out of earshot while District 27 Superintendent, Mary Barton, checked out the classrooms to evaluate the troubled school, which happens to also be on a state watch list for low test scores.

The ploy worked, but now staffers are speaking up saying parents were would be shocked to learn their kids were isolated. Legions is avoiding reporters, and the Department of Education says they plan to look into the allegations.

Woman Stages Wedding Around Pizza

Christine Wagner loves pizza so much, she married it. Well, kinda.

After coming across her grandmother’s vintage wedding dress, the 18-year-old put it on and posted a shot while eating her favorite pizza with the caption: “Wearing grandma’s wedding dress…I’m getting married but it’s to pizza. Sorry boys, I’m a taken woman!”

When former high school photographer, Marcy Harris, saw the post, she suggested creating a full scale wedding shoot around Wagner’s love for pepperoni pizza. The two planned Christine’s dream wedding, made a bow tie for the pizza and even brought in a candy ring pop for the lavish (but short lived) ceremony.

Man uses deer defense in trying to get out of a ticket:

We’ve probably all used a non-conventional excuse to get out of a traffic ticket at one time or another. But Denis Sayers of Massachusetts presented a totally unbelievable defense when trying to argue his traffic ticket: he told the judge the officer’s radar gun may have picked up a deer. Sayers was clocked going 40-mph in 30-mph zone. In court, he asked Officer Royster Johnson if he was “100 percent sure” his radar captured him, or if a deer could have been in the vicinity. Needless to say, the fine was upheld.

Sheriff: Volusia deputy stole from wallets of DUI suspects:

A Florida sheriff’s deputy was doing his job and arresting drunk drivers. The only problems is what happened next: he would turn off his body camera and take money from suspects her arrested. Deputy John Braman was put on paid administrative leave when four people involved in DUI arrests complained that money was missing from their wallets. The decision to suspend the Grinch of a cop was made after a Florida Department of Law Enforcement criminal investigation. Apparently, Braman told those he arrested each of that he was turning off his body camera for “police tactics” just before swiping their cash. Braman, who was paid $60,000 in 2016, was once praised for his bravery after being shot by a suspect during an arrest.

Man drunk-dials police, gets arrested for outstanding warrant:

Drunk dialing is usually reserved for exes and enemies, which is why a man in Canada is surely regretting picking up the phone and calling 911 to snitch on himself. Apparently, the man had a warrant for his arrest. After a hard night of hitting the sauce, he drunk dialed the cops “for no apparent reason other than he was intoxicated,” police said in a release. When officers responded to the call, they discovered the drunken dude had a warrant and hauled him off to the slammer.

Neil Young Says There’s ‘Every Chance’ of a CSNY Reunion

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young has always been an on again, off again band, with most notably in 2016 Nash announcing that Crosby, Stills & Nash would never perform again.

But if you ask Neil Young, he says there’s still “every chance” the foursome could reunite at some point.

“I think CSNY has every chance of getting together again. I’m not against it,” said Young. “There’s been a lot of bad things happen among us, and a lot of things have to be settled. But that’s what brothers and families are all about. We’ll see what happens. I’m open. I don’t think I’m a major obstacle.”

He may not be a major obstacle, but the matter of the recent war of words between David Crosby and Graham Nash — although Nash has also signaled a willingness to let bygones be bygones. As Nash put it last August, “There have been times when I’ve been so pissed at us all for wasting time and not getting on with the job that I wouldn’t talk to any of them. But if Crosby came and played me four songs that knocked me on my ass, what the f— am I supposed to do as a musician, no matter how pissed we are at each other?”

On this day in 1973, ‘”Superstition” the lead single from TaStevie Wonder’s Talking Book album gave him his second #1 single in the US, 10 years after his first #1.

Jeff Beck created the original drum beat while in the studio with Wonder. After writing the song, Wonder offered it to Beck to record, but at the insistence of Berry Gordy, Wonder himself recorded it first. Beck was instead offered ‘Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers’, which he recorded on his Blow by Blow album in 1975.

Husband Successfully Gives His Wife A Kidney For Their 20th Anniversary

Men out there, good luck topping Scott Chafian’s anniversary present. The Suffolk, Virginia man gave his wife Cindy a kidney.

Cindy suffers from polycystic kidney disease, which is when excessive cyst growth shuts down kidneys. Cindy has been on dialysis for two years but when her health began to deteriorate, her hubby found out he was a match and decided to donate his kidney to his wife, right in time for their 20th anniversary.

The couple went under the knife and the surgery was a success. Both Cindy and Scott are doing well and have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the surgery.

Kid Surfer Gets Photobombed By A Shark

A member of the Hassen family got up close and personal with a shark during a trip to the beach in Australia and only knew it thanks to dad Chris Hassen’s photography skills. He was snapping pictures of his 10-year-old son Eden surfing the waves of off Samurai Beach when he noticed something menacing in one of the shots.

What might have been a small great white shark photobombed Eden. “I saw the second photo and (thought) – no way,” Chris remembers. “I quickly called him in and whistled.” As for Eden, he told his dad he saw something in the water but figured it was seaweed.

The close encounter didn’t keep the Hassens out of the water for long. Chris, Eden, and his 12 and five-year-old siblings were back in the water the next day.

Woman Thinks She Can Give Sight To The Blind By Licking Their Eyeball

Hava Celebic has an unusual talent. The 80-year-old from rural Bosnia claims her tongue has healing properties. More specifically, nana Hava as she known, believes she can cure blindness by licking patients’ eyeballs.

So far Hava says she’s helped 5-thousnad people from around the world by removing foreign objects from their eyes…again, with the tongue.

Unfortunately, her kids won’t be going into the family business. As she explains, “Unfortunately I can not pass this to my descendants, because my children are too disgusted to put their tongue on someone’s eye.” Fair enough. And if it’s not already gross enough, , Hava says she’s heard people are going to cut out her tongue when she dies so they continue to treat people.

Man pleads guilty to taking a temporary break from gambling to go rob a bank:

As we previously reported, Kerry Johnson was charged with leaving the South Carolina casino he was gambling at to go rob a bank…then going back to Mardi Gras Casino to continue playing blackjack. Now, he’s owning up to it. Johnson says most of the day was a “blur,” but the 52-year-old ended up pleading guilty to second-degree robbery. He faces between five and 18 years in prison.

Thief breaks through wall of a house to get to a safe:

Why go through the door when you can take down the whole wall? Police in Buende, Germany are looking for the thief or thieves that knocked down the wall of a house, grabbed the safe inside, and fled. The home’s residents weren’t harmed, but police aren’t saying what’s inside the safe because the investigation is still ongoing.

Driver leaves a camel behind at a toll booth:

A driver in China disagreed with a toll booth employee over payment. Naturally, he responded by leaving the camel he was transporting behind at the booth. That caused a bit of a traffic jam but eventually, police found the driver, forced him to remove the animal, and pay the fine.

David Bowie and Mick Jagger have been the butt of jokes for decades for their video of their cover of “Dancing in the Street”. That looks to come to an end, as they have now been immortalized in an amazing Lego remake.

As most Bowie and Jagger fans know, the original “Dancing in the Street” clip was made on the fly immediately after the duo tracked their version of the song for the Live Aid charity. The director, David Mallet, reportedly got the call for the gig only the day before it was scheduled to film.

The Lego rendition is the work of stop-motion animator William Osborne, who says he started working in the field in 2014. This has been his most successful video to date. You can check out his other work at his Vimeo page.
