Iowa Man Sentenced For Lying to Cold Case Investigators

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man has been sentenced for lying during the investigation of the 1985 killing of his estranged wife’s paramour.

Anthony Burtch of Iowa City initially was charged with murder for the slaying of Lance DeWoody. New testing of DNA evidence in the cold case didn’t implicate him, so the murder charge was dropped.

The 58-year-old Burtch was given six months in jail at his sentencing Thursday and given credit for six months already served. He’d pleaded guilty to obstructing prosecution. He acknowledged lying about being harassed by three men.

Roger Waters on Donald Trump: ‘Hopefully He Can Be Removed From Office’

Roger Waters has always let his opinion on war be known, especially in his music. In Pink Floyd, Waters brought up the effects of war with The Wall and The Final Cut albums. He has now shifted his political views on the new US President, Donald Trump, the world is heading down a similar and frightening path.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Waters said “fighting is always about cash. War is hugely profitable. It creates so much money because it’s so easy to spend money very fast. There are huge fortunes to be made.”

And he’s worried that Trump sees war as a lucrative reason for building up the U.S.’ armed forces.

“All the Donald cares about is business,” he said. “He cares about winning and losing at business. He just wants to be the strongest country in the world and to dictate what he believes to everybody else, and he is trying to do so and will continue to try to do so until the resistance grows to the point where hopefully he can be removed from office.”

Waters has also suggested staging The Wall at the U.S.-Mexico border in protest of Trump’s proposed wall. If that doesn’t end up happening, he hopes his upcoming tour will help anyway. “We have to organize our love in such a way that it becomes a potent and powerful enough tour to resist their narcissism and their greed and their callous disregard for the feelings of others and their absolute lack of the ability to empathize with anybody,” he told Rolling Stone. “It’s a lack of empathy that creates a true sociopath like Donald Trump.”

On this day in 1978, Fleetwood Mac was awarded the Album of the Year at the 20th Annual Grammy Awards, for their album Rumours. The album has sold 45 million copies worldwide and produced four singles with “Go Your Own Way”, “Dreams”, “Don’t Stop”, and “You Make Loving Fun”.

Rumours has received diamond certifications in several countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia.

Iconic Rock Illustrator Alan Aldridge Dead at 73

Alan Aldridge, the iconic illustrator for the best-selling book The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics, as well as for classic albums by Elton John and The Who, has passed away at the age of 73.

After working for the Sunday Times Magazine and Penguin Books, he started his own art firm, INK, in association with the Beatles’ Apple Corps.

Born in London on June 1, 1943, Aldridge started his design career at the Sunday Times Magazine before moving to Penguin Books, where he rose through the ranks and ultimately became the company’s art director. By the late ’60s, he’d started his own firm, INK, which opened an association with the Beatles’ Apple Corps.

By the mid-’70s, he designed the cover for the Who’s A Quick One, produced the artwork on Elton John‘s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy LP, and filled the Beatles’ Illustrated Lyrics with his signature style.

Beyond the world of rock n’ roll, Aldridge lent his talents to multiple bestselling books and created the Hard Rock Cafe’s logo.

The details of Aldridge’s death have not been made public. News of his passing is confirmed by his daughter Lily, who shared her sadness in an Instagram post that includes the farewell, “thank you for the years of magic.”

Treasurer Accused of Stealing From High School Booster Club

MANLY, Iowa (AP) — A woman has been accused of stealing more than $9,300 from a northern Iowa high school athletics booster club when she was treasurer.

Online court records say 37-year-old Autumn Dillavou is charged with theft. Authorities say she took the money from the Central Springs High School Athletic Booster Club in Manly from May through December 2016.

A public phone listed for Dillavou was not in service Thursday. Attempts to reach her attorney were unsuccessful.

Woman Had The Hiccups For Eight Years

Danielle Kirkland woke up with the hiccups in March 2008 and didn’t shake them until last year. During those eight years, she went to gastric, ear, nose and throat, and lung specialists in hopes of kicking the annoyance, but it wasn’t until 2016 she found a medicine that worked.

While Kirkland was on a quest to kick her hiccups, they ended up seriously infringing on her life. She claims she was kicked out of nursing school for being “disruptive” in class, had a hiccup fit during a funeral, and had a hard time finding love. After suffering through years of boys making fun of her chronic hiccups, Kirkland met Scott McCracken in 2014 and they’ve been together ever since.

With her love life sorted out, Kirkland continued her mission to end her hiccups, which including trying plenty of medications, some of which had negative side effects like muscle spasms. Eventually, she settled on a muscle relaxant that helps. “I’m basically back to normal,” Kirkland says. “No longer do hiccups interfere with my life.”

Boston Bars Might Ban Glassware Because Of All The Bar Fights

Bar fights are nothing new, but apparently they’re a real problem in Boston. So much so, the city’s Liquor Licensing Board is considering banning glassware in certain bars to avoid serious injuries.

The plan would be for bars with histories of glass-related violence to be forces to use plastic cups, regardless of how fancy the establishment may be. As Christine Puglini, the board’s chairwoman, explains, “You may be high-end, but you’re not acting high-end.”

As you might imagine, not all business owners are thrilled at the idea of gaining plastic. “It makes no sense to offer a legal drug — alcohol — and blame the outcome on packaging,” bar/restaurant manager Michael Anthony explains. “That’s just asinine.”

Japanese App Will Help People Find Nearest Available Toilet

Sick of searching for a bathroom or even worse having to wait in line? Japanese company KDDI Corp. is here to help. They’ve created an app listing the nearest available toilet.

The service will first be targets at office buildings before moving on to public toilets. “People often waste time by looking around for an available toilet on various floors or by waiting until one becomes available,” KDDI spokesman Daisuke Maruo explains. “We believe this service will help people waste less time.”

There is one creepy aspect of the app. For offices, managers will be alerted if a stall is closed for too long. According to KDDI, that’s to “deal with any possible accidents or troubles that may occur.”

Make fakes kidnapping to quicken search for his stolen car:

Marcus Fletcher was working a shift as a pizza delivery man in Philadelphia when his car was stolen. He reported the incident to police, but made up one extra little lie: his four-year-old nephew was in the car. Naturally, police intensified the search and found the car soon after…with no kid inside. Eventually, it became clear 22-year-old Fletcher had lied. He was thrown in jail for making a false report to police but authorities are still investigating the robbery. Source: Associated Press

Man falls through ice because he used a 4-wheeler to check conditions:

Word to the wise: if you’re unsure how thick ice is, don’t use a 4-wheeler to “check it out.” A fisherman in Escanaba, Michigan fell into the water after he used his vehicle to check the conditions. He was able to pull himself out, but according to local authorities, his vehicle has yet to be retrieved. While he may not be a criminal, the unidentified fisherman probably feels pretty stupid.

Crowdfunding Campaign Launched to Erect A Giant Lightning Bolt In David Bowie’s Hometown

A crowdfunding campaign has launched and if you’re a David Bowie fan, you might want to join in.

The campaign is looking to pay tribute to Bowie by erecting a 30-foot lightning bolt statue in his hometown to pay tribute to his life and legacy.

BBC reports that the “ZiggyZag” would be across the street from the town’s public transit station, making it “likely… the first thing visitors to Brixton would see when completed.” The project comes courtesy of This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll, the same group previously responsible for the “Brixton Pound,” Bowie-emblazoned currency developed to support local businesses.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the international David Bowie community to come together to deliver a heartfelt thank you,” This Ain’t Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Charlie Whitehouse says. “A thank you to a man who changed our lives – and changed the world. A thank you not from government, nor from industry, but from us. The people. The fans. Us ordinary weirdos who were never quite the same again after meeting the Thin White Duke.”

The campaign has gotten off to a quick start, but the tab for the memorial won’t be cheap — the organizers are hoping to round up roughly $1.2 million over the course of a month, which might be a little more than “bold and ambitious.” Still, if the plan does come together, it’ll pay a suitably striking tribute to a one-of-a-kind artist. The band’s album AWB also hit #1 on the US Chart.

Grace Slick Explains Her Surprise Decision to Lend a Starship Hit to Chick-Fil-A

Grace Slick is known for her progressive politics and her feeling towards conservatives. That hasn’t stopped her from licensing one of her biggest hits to Chick-Fil-A, which parent company is known for their conservative views.

The Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship singer said her initial reaction about the company using Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” was “F— no,” Slick singles out Chick-Fil-A’s “well-documented history of funding organizations, through their philanthropic foundation WinShape, that are against gay marriage” as a major reason she was opposed to lending the song to a promotional campaign for the restaurant.

“In interviews, CEO Dan T. Cathy has critiqued gay-rights supporters who ‘have the audacity to define marriage’ and said they are bringing ‘God’s judgment’ upon the nation,” writes Slick. “I firmly believe that men should be able to marry men and women women. I am passionately against anyone who would try to suppress this basic human right.”

Slick realized, however, that she had an opportunity to put the company’s money to use for a cause she supports — Lambda Legal, an organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of the LGBTQ community.

“Admittedly,” Slick continues, “it’s not the millions that WinShape has given to organizations that define marriage as heterosexual. But instead of them replacing my song with someone else’s and losing this opportunity to strike back at anti-LGBTQ forces, I decided to spend the cash in direct opposition to ‘Check’-fil-A’s causes – and to make a public example of them, too. We’re going to take some of their money, and pay it back.”

As Slick goes on to explain, it’s all of a piece with the artistic integrity she identifies with her formative years — a time when “a time when artists didn’t just sell their soul to the highest bidder, when musicians took a stand, when the message of songs was ‘feed your head,’ not ‘feed your wallet.’” Saying she hopes to set an example for artists by proving “we can use our gifts to help stop the forces of bigotry,” she quips, “Nothing’s gonna stop us now.”

Arrest Made in Foxhole Firearm Theft

On Thursday, February 16, 2017, at approximately 10:45 a.m., the Ottumwa Police Department responded to Foxhole Firearms, located at 2603 Roemer, Ottumwa, on a report that a theft of a firearm had just occurred.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department located and arrested Ryan Sidney Comer, age 28, of Ottumwa, and recovered the stolen firearm.

Comer was charged with the following offenses:

Interference with Official Acts (Enhanced), a Class “D” Felony
Carrying Weapons, an Aggravated Misdemeanor
Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs, a Serious Misdemeanor
Violation of a No Contact Order (warrant), a Simple Misdemeanor

This investigation into the theft of the firearm is ongoing.

Please note the following pursuant to recent Supreme Court rulings: “A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
