‘Queen in 3-D’ Retrospective Book Hitting Stores This Spring

Fans of Queen can now get a personal look at the history of the band with the release of the book, Queen in 3-D.

The book is scheduled to arrive in store on May 25th and is full of archival stereoscopic photos. It also includes guitarist Brian May’s patented OWL photo viewer, adding another personal touch to the 256-page collection of more than 300 previously unpublished photos.

Promising “a series of glimpses of life with the rock band Queen, seen from the inside for the first time,” the Queen in 3-D press release says the book is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for fans to gain a new perspective on the group’s distinguished history.

“The pictures and self-penned text tell the story of Brian’s discovery of the world of stereoscopy as a boy, and chronicle Queen from the early 1970s all the way to the present day,” it reads. “The images, from Brian’s personal archives, were taken using the various stereo cameras which Brian carried throughout his life. … they leap into stunning three-dimensional realism, giving a uniquely vivid impression of life with Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and Brian himself, alongside the people who helped to shape Queen’s amazing global adventure.”
For May, the book is a fulfillment of a personal quest to help revive stereoscopic photos with the help of the London Stereoscopic Company, whose online store will be taking orders closer to Queen in 3-D‘s publication.
“A whole new audience can enjoy the magic of immersive 3-D in their own homes, just as our ancestors did in Victorian times,” said May, who’s reportedly working with the company on more books. “We’re restoring and reissuing stereoscopic masterpieces from the 1850s, along with new 3-D wonders of the modern world.”

On this day in 1981, Blondie started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Rapture”. The single was the group’s fourth US #1 and the first #1 song in the United States to feature rap. The song was notable for name-checking hip-hop pioneers Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash.

“Rapture” was Certified Gold by the RIAA and Silver in the UK by the BPI.

POW Honor to Delgado

Oskaloosa–Jeysen Delgado (Jr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology) had a spectacular weekend and his efforts netted him Heart of America Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week laurels Monday.

Delgado claimed his first career award as he guided William Penn (14-13, 4-8 Heart) to a 3-1 record against Mount Mercy over the weekend.

The junior hit a jaw-dropping .714 (10-for-14) with one double, six runs, and two RBIs. He also walked three times (only two strikeouts) for a .765 on-base clip. A base thief as well, Delgado tallied two stolen bases.

He notched at least two hits in all four contests (twice with three) and scored two runs in three separate outings. His best effort was a 3-for-3 effort in Sunday’s opener that also included two runs, one walk, and two steals.

For the year, Delgado is hitting .375 (33-for-88) with four doubles, two triples, and two home runs. He has scored 30 runs with 15 RBIs. The junior has reached base more than half of the times he has come to the plate (.521 on-base %), having also walked 21 times and been hit-by-pitch seven times. He has stolen 20 bases out of 21 attempts as well.

The award is the first for WPU.

Aerosmith Postpone Their American Tour to Work on New Album

Aerosmith have postponed the American Leg of their upcoming tour to work on a new album.

The band has spent months talking about what could be their final tour, the Aero-Vederci Baby! tour. However, the plans to bring the tour this fall to North America has been shelved. According to Joe Perry, that’s two release more material, before hitting the road to tour until it’s over.

“We postponed the American tour we were supposed to do this fall,” he told AZ Central. “And we’re gonna go out and tour until we’re done. And we’re gonna try and hit every place we’ve ever played and never played. There’s always new places to go. New countries. I’d like to play China and the Far East. There’s a lot of places that are off the beaten path. Is this the last tour? Well, I don’t know. I don’t think so.”

Aerosmith will still play their oversea dates that start in May and keep them busy until July.

Perry said “one of the reasons we postponed [the American] tour” was to “give ourselves some time to get something done. We definitely have another record in us, if not two. But we’ll see how that goes.”

Though stating that the upcoming tour will be extensive, he couldn’t comment about it being their final tour. When asked by AZ Central if this will be a farewell tour, he said, “Not officially, no.”

“Try and picture your last meal,” he explained. “You’re only gonna eat so many times in your life. You’re gonna sit down at the table 258 million times. There’s a finite number of times you’re gonna do anything in your life. To picture a final Aerosmith gig, it’s like … I can’t do it. There’s too much of that ‘rock until you drop’ ingrained into this band. But like I said, we’re at the end, so who knows how long it’s gonna go?”

Iowa Senate OKs Estimated $1.8M Reduction to Injured Workers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Senate has approved a bill to overhaul how workers are compensated for on-the-job injuries, sending the measure to Gov. Terry Branstad.

The legislation, which passed Monday night with only Republican support, reduces benefits for employees injured at work in Iowa. It decreases some coverage for shoulder injuries and permanent injuries impacting the whole body.

The bill is expected to decrease payouts from the state Workers’ Compensation Fund by about $1.8 million annually beginning in the 2018 budget year. A new retraining program is expected to increase some state costs.

Senate Democrats have accused Republicans of cutting costs at the expense of injured workers, while Republicans say the changes are necessary to reduce unnecessary lawsuits.

If signed into law by Branstad, the changes would go into effect July 1.

Ex-ELO Drummer Bev Bevan Skipping Rock Hall Induction

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, but Bev Bevan won’t be involved.

Bevan broke the news with a recent Facebook post, citing prior commitments with U.K.’s Jasper Carrott. “These dates have been sold out for some time, and when the news broke about our induction, it was too late to change them,” wrote Bevan. “It would have been fantastic to meet up with Roy, Jeff, and Richard again.”

Bevan reflected on his career, calling the induction “a great honor”.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have had a life in the music business from my first band ‘Rocking Ronnie & The Renegades’ to Black Sabbath and all the bits in between,” he wrote. “It has been a blast and I still get a buzz every time I walk out onstage. However, I would like to add that without the support of the record-buying and concert-going public my great career could never have happened. So a huge thank you goes out to everyone who has ever purchased a record that I played on or been to any of the concerts.”

William Penn Wins Weekend Series Over Mount Mercy

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen baseball team got back on track over the weekend by taking of three of four games against Mount Mercy in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

William Penn (14-12, 4-8 Heart) won Saturday’s opener 11-6. The team then took the nightcap, which was suspended due to fog and concluded Sunday, by a score of 11-1.

On Sunday, the navy and gold dropped the first contest 7-3 before rallying to win the second outing 6-3.

WPU 11, Mount Mercy 6

The hosts opened the weekend with 15 hits, including a first-inning double by Cory Russell (Sr., El Cajon, Calif., Education) that plated Jeysen Delgado (Jr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology).

WPU then posted four runs in the second with three coming on another two-bagger, this one via Anthony Aguila (Jr., Highland, Calif., Kinesiology).

MMU (12-15, 5-7 Heart) trimmed the margin to 5-3, but the Statesmen secured the win with five tallies in the bottom of the fifth. Aguila, who was 2-for-3 with five RBIs, once again produced the big base knock, doubling in a pair of runs.

Dominik Sawyer (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Psychology and Human Services), who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, capped his effort by driving in Raskin in the sixth. The senior helped William Penn to a 15-13 triumph in hits.

Delgado, Russell, and Fabian Gutierrez (Jr., Selah, Wash., Communications) were all 2-for-4 in the win with Russell posting two RBIs. Colton Johnson (Sr., Westminster, Calif., Physical Education), Delgado, and Julian Villegas (Jr., Wilmington, Calif., Sociology) all touched home plate on two occasions each.

Nick Seipel (Jr., Rosemont, Minn., Software Engineering) went five innings in the start, permitting just one earned run on eight scattered hits. He struck out one against three walks.

WPU 11, Mount Mercy 1

A seven-run fourth frame snapped a 1-1 tie. The inning actually stretched into two days as the game was suspended in the fourth due to a thick fog that rolled in late Saturdayevening.

The Statesmen outhit the Mustangs 10-7 in the victory, but no hit was bigger than Johnson’s in the fourth as he stepped up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a grand slam over the left-field fence. The home run is his first of 2017.

Aguila matched him one inning later with a three-run shot–his third roundtripper of the year. He, Delgado, and Gutierrez all went 2-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored apiece. T.J. Murphy (Jr., Woodenville, Wash., Exercise Science) also scored two runs in the matchup.

D.J. Milam (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Business Management), who earned the win, struck out three (one walk) in four innings. He only permitted one run (earned) on five base knocks.

Scott Simpson (Jr., Berwick, Victoria, Exercise Science) took the hill to begin Sunday and kept the trend going, tossing three scoreless frames (two hits), while sitting two down on Ks (two BBs).

Mount Mercy 7, WPU 3

The home team got off to another good start, but could hold off the visitors, who scored all of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

WPU narrowly lost the hits battle 10-9 with Delgado finishing a perfect 3-for-3. Gutierrez added two more base knocks.

Trent Barnett (So., Eddyville, Iowa, Accounting) was productive in 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings. He permitted two hits, had two strikeouts, and walked one MMU hitter.

WPU 6, Mount Mercy 3

Despite playing so well Saturday, William Penn was at risk of earning only a split after dropping Sunday’s opener and then falling behind 3-0 in the nightcap.

Still down three runs at the midway point, the offense finally woke up and cranked out five runs on six hits in the fourth. Delgado brought in two on a single and Aguila capped the inning with a run-scoring double.

The Statesmen, who outhit MMU 11-8, added an insurance run in the sixth. Delgado was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Wilson Lorenzo (So., Fort Myers, Fla., Computer Science) was also 3-for-4. Jared Goodman (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif., Physical Education) contributed two more hits and Saenz touched home plate twice in pinch-running situations.

Brian Harrity (So., Castle Rock, Colo., Software Engineering) nearly went the distance, permitting three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of action. The sophomore’s three strikeouts were countered by three walks.

Milam’s short outing Saturday kept him fresh enough to come out of the bullpen and close out the win. He collected the save with three straight outs (one strikeout).

Next Up: William Penn travels to Forest City Tuesday to face Waldorf in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

On this day in 1972, Elvis Presley recorded what would be his last major hit “Burning Love”. The song would hit number two on the US chart. However, it reached #1 on Cashbox’s Top 40 Charts for the week of November 11, which gave him 20 US #1 hits.

Written by Dennis Linde and originally recorded by country soul artist Arthur Alexander, who included it on his 1972 self-titled album. It was soon covered and brought to fame by Elvis, becoming his biggest hit single in the United States since “Suspicious Minds” in 1969.

It Takes Man 33 Times To Pass Driver’s Test

If nothing else, Christian Whiteley-Mason is a very persistent man. At 42, the British man finally got his driver’s license…after an astounding 25 years of trying.

Christian first gave the test a go in 1992, but failed. Over the years, he spent $12-thousand on more than 85-lessons with 14 different instructors, but nothing worked. “I had 56 lessons with my first instructor,” Christian remembers, “and eventually he told me to just give up as I would never pass.”

After 33 tries, Christian was able to legally get behind the wheel. “I’m so proud of myself. It’s changed my life to be honest,” he says. “I felt like I’d achieved everything I really wanted to achieve, this was the one thing left I had to do.”

Doctors Remove Mushrooms That Began Growing In Woman’s Stomach

Make sure you chew your food…seriously. A 50-year-old woman went to a hospital in China complaining of stomach pain and discovered mushrooms she’d eaten had grown in her stomach.

It turns out if you don’t cook and chew dehydrated mushrooms properly, they can expand once they come in to contact with stomach acid. Doctors discovered multiple fungi had become lodged in the woman’s stomach, including a whole mushroom measuring almost an inch in length.

Surgeons removed the mushrooms piece by piece and the woman recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

PETA Grosses People Out After Telling Them To Look Inside Possums’ Pouches

Did you know possums are marsupials? That means they carry their babies in a pouch, like a kangaroo. PETA reminded us of that fun animal fact then asked us all to get more involved with those pouches than we’d ever want to.

The site published an article explaining that even when possums are dead, offspring may still be alive. So they’re asking those who come across a dead looking possum to peek inside the pouch and if the babies are alive, “rush” the animals to the nearest vet.

As you might imagine, the Internet has not accepted the challenge. While some people are simply grossed out, others point out that possums are known for playing dead and don’t want to risk touching the animal and getting bitten when they all of a sudden wake up.

Someone stole a National Guard humvee:

It’s not a good idea to steal from the National Guard. Authorities in Stow, Ohio are on the hunt for the person or people who broke into their armory and somehow managed to drive off with a humvee. Fortunately, the vehicle was found in a garage at a vacant home the next town over. So far, no arrests have been made.

Sword carrying Joker arrested:

Did you know wearing a mask in public is a felony in Virginia? Jeremy Putnam does. Authorities in Winchester have been getting calls about a man wearing a cape and carrying a sword and when they responded to the latest report, they discovered 31-year-old Putnam. As if a cape and a sword wasn’t enough, he was also dressed, makeup and all, like Heath Ledger’s Joker character from “The Dark Knight.” Putnam is being charged with wearing a mask in public, a felony punishable by up to five years in jail under Virginia law. Man arrested for eating pancakes in the middle of the street:

When he was picked up by Lakeland, Florida police, Kiaron Thomas was two things: hungry and inconsiderate. The 21-year-old decided to set up a chair and small table in the middle of a crosswalk and enjoy a stack of pancakes while blocking traffic. Thomas later admitted to police it was all a prank, but they weren’t amused. He was hit with placing an obstruction in the roadway and disrupting the free flow of traffic.

Judge Blocks Iowa Governor’s Deposition in Firing of Agent

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge says Gov. Terry Branstad doesn’t have to testify under oath in a lawsuit filed by a fired Division of Criminal Investigation agent who blames Branstad for destroying his career.

Judge William Kelly, a Branstad appointee, rejected Larry Hedlund’s request to depose Branstad in Hedlund’s wrongful termination lawsuit.

Kelly ruled Friday in favor of the Iowa attorney general’s office, which is representing Branstad and argued the governor was too busy to face a two-hour deposition. Kelly says Hedlund can seek information from Branstad in written questions but requiring the governor to be deposed “would be an incredible burden” while he’s preparing to become U.S. ambassador to China.

Hedlund is suing Branstad and Iowa Department of Public Safety officials. He contends he was defamed and fired for reporting wrongdoing, including a 2013 incident in which he reported Branstad’s speeding SUV.
