Former Santana Lead Singer Alex Ligertwood Dead At 79

Former Santana singer Alex Ligertwood passed away at his home in Santa Monica, California, on April 30th. He was 79.

The Scottish musician, best known as the lead vocalist for the Latin rock band, died just two weeks after his last show.

“It’s with great sadness and heartache to announce the passing of my sweet dear Alex Ligertwood, my husband of 25 years, we knew each other for 36 years,” his wife, Shawn Brogan, wrote on Facebook in a post announcing the news.

“Alex passed peacefully in his sleep with his doggy Bobo by his side yesterday. Alex was loved by so many. If you knew him, you loved him. He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul. His favorite thing in life was to make music, sing, and to share his gift with us. He performed his last show just two weeks ago. I’m grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end. I will always love you, my sweet Alex. Rest in peace. Soar and sing with the angels, my love. Please keep me & his family, Lynn & Stewart Locke, Alex, Jenny, Kali, Merci & Marilo in your prayers,” she added.

Ligertwood is best known as a lead vocalist for Santana, with five different stints from 1979 to 1994, which included the US Festival in 1982 and Live Aid in 1985.

He is credited as lead vocalist on Santana songs such as “All I Ever Wanted,” “You Know That I Love You,” “Winning” and “Hold On.” He also has co-writing credits for Santana songs including “Brightest Star,” “E Papa Re,” “Make Somebody Happy,” “Somewhere in Heaven” and “The Nile.”

He additionally performed with the Jeff Beck Group and Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express.

Peter Gabriel Shares ‘Won’t Stand Down’ From Forthcoming Album ‘o\i’

Peter Gabriel recently released a new song, “Won’t Stand Down,” the fifth track from his upcoming 11th studio album, o/i.

“It’s really a song to encourage some sort of activism,” Gabriel said of the politically charged single and added that he originally wanted to create music for The Elders.org – the organization founded by Nelson Mandela that sees independent global leaders fight for justice, human rights and a more sustainable planet.

“That’s something which I wanted to talk about, write about and encourage, because it’s pretty dark out there in lots of places and I think we need people who can just nudge both us and our leaders and keep alive some basic values of justice, compassion and democracy – a hope that can help us start envisioning a just, peaceful and fairer world,” Gabriel added.

Gabriel also recalled how he believes people “generally respond much better” towards messages of hope and positivity, rather than being “bombarded and scared by negative ones,” and therefore wanted to bring that lighter feeling to his new music.

For the “Bright Side” version of “Won’t Stand Down,” he was inspired by Marvin Gaye and the “Cuban element to his song ‘Sexual Healing,'” which brought energy and movement to the song.

“A million mothers looking forward/ They’re all looking out ahead/ In the haze they can make out a planet/ Alive, or was it dead?,” Gabriel sings in the ethereal, invigorating first verse. “Moving out in so many directions/ This is not the way we want to live/ It’s not the way it has to be.”

It gradually builds towards the euphoric-yet-tranquil chorus: “But we won’t stand down/ Until there’s something better showing on the ground.”
