Rick Wakeman Says He’s ‘Doing Really Well’ After Undergoing Brain Surgery

Rick Wakeman has shared a positive update on his health after undergoing brain surgery, saying he is “doing really well.”

The former Yes member underwent an operation on his spinal cord earlier this year before having further surgery on his brain last week.

Writing on his official website, Wakeman said, “As many of you may be aware, a few months ago I had to reschedule my American tour because of health issues as I was diagnosed with the neurological disorder ‘normal pressure hydrocephalus’ and following hospitalised operational tests in September, I had the necessary corrective ‘shunt’ brain surgery last week.”

He went on to say he was “pleased” to confirm that the procedure was “very successful.” Wakeman added that was “now recuperating at home, being cared for by my lovely wife and our wonderful furry healing animals.”

The artist continued, “I have to take things easy for a while but have been told by my surgeon that I will be perfectly fine to travel to America for the tour with my son Oliver in March and will be fine for all future engagements after that – and I will also be fine for the 2 Saving Strays charity concerts in Norwich and Ipswich on December 19 and 20.”

“I am also pleased to say that it doesn’t seem to have affected my piano playing in any way as I still seem to be very capable of hitting the odd wrong note here and there when I lose my concentration!!”

Wakeman concluded, “Once again, I’d like to thank everybody who wished me well over the last few months for a speedy recovery, as it really did mean a lot to me. Thanks again… Rick.”

On this day in 1976 – The first day of the photo shoot for the forthcoming Pink Floyd Animals album cover took place at Battersea Power Station in London, England with a giant inflatable pig lashed between two of the structure’s tall towers. A trained marksman was hired ready to fire if the inflatable escaped, but was not needed on this, the first day. Unfortunately the following day the marksman hadn’t been rebooked, so when the inflatable broke free from its moorings, it was able to float away, eventually landing in Kent where it was recovered by a local farmer, reportedly furious that it had ‘scared his cows.’

Elton John Announced As First Headliner Of Rock In Rio 2026

Rock in Rio has announced Elton John as the first headliner of its 2026 edition, marking the legendary artist’s long-awaited return to Brazil after nearly a decade.

Taking to the Palco Mundo on September 7 for what will be his only Brazilian performance, Elton will open the countdown to one of the world’s most iconic music festivals with a show set to be both deeply moving and spectacular in scale.

Rock in Rio founder Roberto Medina describes the booking as a historic moment for the festival — one that continues its legacy of hosting some of the greatest artists of all time. Elton’s appearance follows the conclusion of his record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2023 and promises to deliver an unforgettable new chapter in his relationship with Brazilian audiences.

I’ve always had a fantastic time whenever we’ve played in Brazil,” says Elton. “I didn’t manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock In Rio asked me to play, I said yes immediately. I love my Brazilian fans, they hold such a special place in my heart.”

“The energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable,” he adds. “As a band, we’re playing brilliantly and we’re sounding as good as we ever have, and, importantly, we’re still really loving playing together. I really cannot wait to return to Brazil next summer.

Tickets for Rock in Rio Card 2026 will go on sale to the general public on December 9, exclusively via Ticketmaster Brasil. For more information, visit rockinrio.com.
