Iowa Public Television Announces Second Season of ‘Greetings from Iowa’ Web Series

(JOHNSTON, Iowa) – After an engaging and successful first season, Iowa Public Television announced today the second installment of its online-exclusive web series, “Greetings from Iowa.” Season 2 will premiere Wednesday, April 4 on Facebook, YouTube and Iptv.org.

“Greetings from Iowa” is a dispatch from America’s heartland – a personal, firsthand exploration of the colorful people, places and stories that make Iowa great. Every episode is a friendly meeting with folks who are thriving in their own unique ways within the state’s ever-evolving culture.

The upcoming season will feature a variety of Iowans and their many talents, including unique female athletes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, artists, musicians, activists and creators. From West Liberty to Storm Lake, to Corydon and Tama, with many stops in between, episodes dive into the wide range of Iowans’ lifestyles and cultures, starting conversations across our great state.

“When we’re on the road shooting stories, some of the best conversation takes place at the in-between stops – gas stations, diners and other everyday places,” said “Greetings from Iowa” producer/director Tyler Brinegar. “I wanted to find a way to capture that common discourse and build a collage of unique Iowans with this series. Burn Scheduled for Memorial Park in Ottumwa

(OTTUMWA, Iowa) – In 2016, the City of Ottumwa initiated a water quality improvement project through a program with the Iowa DNR and the State Revolving Fund. Part of this project is the restoration of 9.5 acres of oak savannah in the northwest portion Memorial Park. Maintenance of the oak savannah requires periodic prescribed burns. Fire promotes the growth of native plants and controls the growth of unwanted woody and non-native vegetation.

According to a release sent by the City of Ottumwa, spring’s prescribed burn is scheduled for the morning of March 24, with a backup date of March 31. It will be conducted jointly by the Ottumwa and Wapello County Rural Volunteer Fire Departments.

The public is urged to be cautious of smoke, which may cause short term visibility issues on nearby roadways, and refrain from performing any outdoor tasks if there is smoke in their area. Homeowners downwind of Memorial Park should close their windows while the burn is being conducted.

One Man Dead After Police Standoff in Pella

(PELLA, Iowa) – A standoff between an Illinois man and Iowa law enforcement ended late Wednesday afternoon with the death of the man.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at approximately 6:30 pm the Pella Police Department received a report from a local citizen concerning the welfare of a man staying in the Pella area. The man, later identified as Jonathan W. Martin, 62, of Galena, IL, was located in an apartment on W. 16th Street in Pella. Upon further investigation Pella officers learned that Martin was a fugitive from the State of Illinois, wanted on felony charges with nationwide extradition authorized. Officers attempted to establish contact with Martin, but multiple efforts were rejected.

Pella officers concluded that an additional person, a female, was in the apartment with Martin. Officers were eventually able to speak with the female, but efforts to have Martin exit the unit failed.

At the request of the Pella Police Department, on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, mid-morning, negotiators from the Iowa State Patrol assumed the lead in negotiating with the occupants of the apartment. The female occupant in the apartment agreed to exit prior to noon, and was found to be uninjured. As the event played out it was clearly established that additional assets were required to successfully resolve the incident. The ISP State Tactical Unit responded to the scene and upon entering the apartment determined that Mr. Martin was deceased of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The scene and incident was turned over to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Pella Police Department Criminal Investigations for evaluation and further investigation. Martin was transferred to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, Ankeny, Iowa, where he will undergo a forensic examination.

Students Invited to Submit Artwork for ‘From the Farm to You’ Calendar

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today encouraged students from Iowa to submit artwork to be considered for inclusion in the “From the Farm to You” calendar. The calendars are distributed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at the Iowa State Fair and include artwork that emphasizes the connection between the production of Iowa’s farmers and the products used by people every day.

“These calendars do a great job of showcasing Iowa agriculture to the visitors at our booths during the Iowa State Fair. The creativity and artistic ability of these students help educate fairgoers about where their food comes from,” Naig said.

Students of all ages are invited to submit artwork. Pictures should be drawn using only black lines on plain white paper, 8 ½ by 11 inches. The pictures should not be colored. They can be submitted to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Calendar Kids, 502 E. 9th St., Des Moines, IA 50319.

Drawings must be received by May 1, 2018 to be considered.

National Agriculture Day Celebrates American Food and Fiber Production

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – March 20 is National Agriculture Day – a day designated each year by the Agriculture Council of America (ACA) to celebrate the accomplishments of agriculture.

This year’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) theme, Agriculture: Food for Life, spotlights the hard work of American farmers, ranchers and foresters who diligently work to provide food, fiber and more to the United States and countries around the world. To ensure a prosperous future for American agriculture, FSA provides continuous support to agriculturalists across the country.

FSA is rural America’s engine for economic growth, job creation and development, offering local service to millions of rural producers. In fiscal year 2017, USDA Farm Loan programs provided $6 billion in support to producers across America, the second highest total in FSA history. FSA also distributed $1.6 billion in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) payments to over 375,000 Americans to improve water quality, reduce soil erosion and increase wildlife habitat.

For agricultural producers who suffered market downturns in 2016, USDA is issuing approximately $8 billion in payments under the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs. USDA also continues to provide extensive assistance in response to natural disasters throughout the country, including last year’s hurricanes in Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, drought in the northern high plains, wildfires in the west and central plains, floods, tornados, freezes and other catastrophic weather events.

To support beginning farmers and ranchers, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue signed a Memorandum of Understanding with officials from SCORE, the nation’s largest volunteer network of expert business mentors, to support new and beginning farmers. The agreement provides new help and resources for beginning ranchers, veterans, women, socially disadvantaged Americans and others, providing new tools to help them both grow and thrive in agribusiness.

Money Smart Kid Essay Contest Deadline Extended for Iowa

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – The Iowa Money Smart Kid essay contest deadline has been extended. Iowa students now have until Friday, March 23, 2018, to enter the essay contest sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association.

Along with the extended deadline comes an increase in the number of awards offered. Five new awards have been added for contest runner-ups, so now the top ten finalists will be recognized. Award levels now include the following:

• $1,000 award to first-place winner (1 award)
• $500 award to four finalist (4 awards)
• $300 award for five runner ups (5 awards) – NEW!

Eligible students must be in grades 7-11 and can enter the contest by writing an essay addressing the following:

Please write a brief newspaper article describing the potential devastating effects of a natural disaster (fire, flood, hurricane, etc.) on a family’s financial situation. Please select only one type of natural disaster for the focus of your article. Be sure to include tips and resources for readers to help prepare them for a potential future unexpected crisis.

All essays must be 400 words or fewer and are due by March 23, 2018.

(WAVERLY, Iowa) — Wartburg College will host its inaugural TEDxWartburgCollege event April 7, from 10 AM to 5 PM, in the McCaskey Lyceum of Saemann Student Center.

TEDxWartburgCollege was designed to foster an innovative community at the college and in the Cedar Valley where new ideas can thrive. This year’s theme is “Embracing the Future.”

The event will feature talks from Samantha Pfab, a Wartburg sophomore from Dubuque; Shahzeb Jadoon, a Wartburg sophomore from Lahore, Pakistan; Cynthia Bane, a social psychologist and Wartburg College professor; Maria Munguia-Cortes, a Wartburg sophomore from Immokalee, Fla.; Jonah Stillman, an 18-year-old Gen Z keynote speaker; Johanna Kluck, a Wartburg junior from Bruning, Neb.; Nate Monson, executive director of Iowa Safe Schools; Anne Duncan, Wartburg’s environmental sustainability coordinator; and Madalynn McKelvey, a Wartburg senior from Ottumwa.

All talks will be recorded and available online following the event.

Students led the charge to obtain the licensure and approval from TEDx to host TEDxWartburgCollege. TEDx events are independently planned and coordinated on a community-by-community basis. Wartburg’s lead organizer, Alejandro Salazar, is a junior from Ibarra, Ecuador.

“I really wanted to bring TEDx to Wartburg because I know so many fellow students who have amazing ideas that are innovative and indicative of the future. They deserve a space to share those ideas and be heard,” Salazar said.

Law Enforcement Seeks Information After Commercial Burglary

(WASHINGTON COUNTY, Iowa) – Law enforcement in Washington County are looking to the public for information about individuals possessing stolen credit cards after a commercial burglary on or around March 5.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reports via a news release that the credit cards were stolen and that they were able to obtain security camera images from businesses in the Wilton and Walcott area where these credit cards were used. It is unclear if law enforcement know how the cards were stolen and no other information was made available at the time of the press release.

Anyone with any information on the identity of these individuals or a description of the vehicle they are using are urged by law enforcement to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at 319-653-2107 or their tip line at 800-847-7492.
