On this day in 1985, Dire Straits started a nine-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 album chart with, Brothers in Arms. The album is Certified Nine-Times Platinum in the United States, and is one of the world’s best-selling albums, having sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

The album won two Grammy Awards in 1986, and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. This would be the band’s final album until they reunited and recorded 1991’s On Every Street.

Yoko Ono to Be Added to Songwriting Credit for “Imagine”

Efforts are underway to change the songwriting credits of “Imagine” by John Lennon to include Yoko Ono’s name as well.

This news comes from the National Music Publishers Associations (NMPA) annual meeting, where Ono was on hand with her son, Sean Ono Lennon, to accept the association’s Centennial Song Award for “Imagine”, on John Lennon’s behalf.

During the meeting, video footage was shown from 1980 where Lennon said Ono deserved co-writing credit due to her “influence and inspiration”. It appears that those wishes will now be fulfilled.

The change to the credits is not a simple process, with many factors to be considered. The change should happen quicker than most cases, however, as Ono is the beneficiary to Lennon’s estate.

There currently is no quote from Ono on the decision.

Dog Survives Being Picked Up By A Tornado

Duke is one strong dog. The pup was picked up and thrown one thousand feet by a tornado in North Carolina and managed to survive.

The owner, Lewis Vannoy, says Duke was tossed “just like a rag doll” and was left with his leg broken in multiple places and his retina damaged. After multiple surgeries and some time at the vet, Duke is recuperating at home.

Woman Turns Her Garden Into A Portrait Of Her Son

Think your mom is a bit over the top? Meet Michelle Foley. The British art student has been turning her garden into a family portrait. So far, she’s shaped her 12-foot-tall bushes to look like her 21-year-old son, Brennan Black, and her partner Andrew Batterham.

“I’m really interested in gardening too so when I had to cut my hedges it only seemed natural that heads came out,” Michelle explains. “Andrew looks uncannily like him and Brennan is perhaps not quite recognizable because the glasses aren’t on yet.” She’s working on creating glasses out of plastic and thinks once they’re on, you “won’t be able to tell them apart.”

We don’t know how exactly her son or her boo feels about the foliage tribute, but one person who’s not thrilled? Michelle’s daughter. She’s still waiting for her face to make it to the garden. Guess we know who the favorite child is.

Man Leads Police On Slow Chase Because He Can’t Drive Stick Shift

If you’re going to get into the world of stealing cars, you’ve got to learn how to drive shift. Alabama man Randy Dewayne Vert found that out the hard way when when he stole a flatbed delivery truck and tried to flee. Instead, he led police on a low speed chase because he couldn’t get the vehicle out of first gear.

The truck traveled at speeds of 25 to 30 mph until the transmission seized and the truck stopped. Vert is now facing charges of first-degree theft of property, reckless endangerment, attempting to elude and resisting arrest.

Men chuck fruit at deli employee:

Police in New York City are looking for the two men who walked into a deli and after getting into a tiff with an employee over their food order, started chucking fruit at the guy. The angry customers must have had some arm on them because the employee was left with a broken jaw and cuts on his face.

Husband who robbed a bank to avoid wife gets house arrest:

Lawrence John Ripple made the news back in January when he pleaded guilty to bank robbery and told the local Kansas City cops that he did it in order to avoid his wife. According to the 71-year-old, he wrote the robbery note in front of his missus, telling her he’d rather be in jail than with her. The judge must have a great sense of humor because he has sentenced Ripple to six months of home confinement. He was also slapped with three years of supervised probation and a fine. The silver lining? Ripple says he was suffering from depression at the time but has found the right medication and is back to his old self.

Naked man goes on a tear inside antique store:

Sean Morisette had a weird day yesterday. The 50-year-old walked into Antiques Marketplace in Putnam, Connecticut completely naked and started knocking over display cases and smashing items. It’s unclear what exactly Morisette has against the antiquities, but he’s now facing third-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief.

Woman Convicted of Voluntary Manslaughter for Killing Mate

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A jury has convicted an Ames woman of voluntary manslaughter for killing her husband.

The Story County jury returned the verdict Wednesday against 36-year-old Candace Cummings in the second day of deliberations. Cummings was charged with first-degree murder for killing 36-year-old Harland “Jesse” Cummings. Prosecutors say she shot him as he slept.

Her sentencing is scheduled for July 17.

Candace Cummings told investigators she killed her husband because of stress in their marriage and the years of abuse she’d suffered at his hands.

Anderson Denied the Bounty Again to Claim 300th IMCA win on Kraig Ford Night

Oskaloosa, Iowa (June 14th, 2017) – Wednesday Night was Kraig Ford Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway and 45 cars signed in to tame the monster half mile. The Kids got to get up close to the drivers as there was a Driver’s Autograph session at intermission for the youngsters behind the flag stand. Meanwhile in the Hobby Stocks the $300 bounty on Shannon Anderson was again up for grabs thanks to Edel Lawn Service, Cindy Drost and Independent Auto of Marshalltown.

Shannon Anderson would get a milestone win in the Hobby Stocks keeping him perfect on the season. Bryan Claussen (Sport Compacts), Nathan Wood (Stock Cars), Curtis VanDerWal (SportMods) and Scott Dickey (Modifieds).

First feature of the night was the 8 lap Kelli Steli State Farm IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Five cars signed in to race and after the intial start called back, they tried to get a lap completed. Before lap one was in the books, the caution came out when Levi Heath and Brandon Housley, both came to a stop in turn one. On the restart, Daniel Fellows grabbed the lead away and never looked back. However Fellows didn’t report to tech so that gave Bryan Claussen the win ahead of Clayton Webster. Fellows was given third ahead of Heath and Housley.

Oskaloosa True Value IMCA Sport Mods 14 lap feature was next to roll on the speedway and it was Brayton Carter that grabbed the top spot early. Carter looked comfortable out front until the caution came out on lap four for Logan Anderson in turn two and Carter VanDenBerg on the back stretch. On the restart, Curtis VanDerWal made the right move and got by Jason Hall, Colton Livezey and Carter to take the lead. VanDerWal led the remaining laps to take his fourth win of the season at Osky. Jason McDaniel wrestled second away, Brayton Carter was third, Colton Livezey was fourth and Austin Paul was fifth.

Scott Dickey led all 14 laps of the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature event to take his first win in 2017 at the monster half mile. Colt Mather tried to chase him down but ran out of time and settled with a second place finish. Todd Cooney was third, Cayden Carter was fourth and Jason Murray was fifth.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 14 lap feature event, it was Danny Thrasher leading lap one but on lap two, it was Nathan Wood taking the top spot away. Wood saw several challenges from Derrick Agee but it was Wood hanging on to take his third win at Osky ahead of Agee. Mike Hughes, Todd Reitzler and Thrasher rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the KBOE Radio / Mahaska Bottling IMCA Hobby Stocks 14 lap feature. Jared Stephens and Ryan Wells led the field to the green and it was Stephens taking the early race lead. Meanwhile Mike Kincaid, started sixth, and Shannon Anderson, started ninth, worked their way through the field. Kincaid took the spot away on lap six edging out Anderson to the line but it was Anderson taking the lead away on lap seven. Anderson began to pull away and not even lap traffic would slow him down. Anderson went on to take his sixth win at Osky, 18th win of the season and 300th IMCA Hobby Stock feature win. Mike Kincaid fell short and finished second, Steve Allen was third. Stephens fell back to fourth and Bill Bonnett was fifth.

Next Wednesday Night is Yaw’s Auto Salvage Night. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts are all taking to the monster half mile. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

Osky Softball Battles but Falls Short to PC on the Road

The Oskaloosa softball team battled gamely, but ultimately fell to a very underrated Pella Christian team on the road Wednesday night, 6-5.

The game got off to a hot offensive start despite the game featuring two of the state’s most decorated pitchers.

Osky scratched across a run in the top of the first off senior Emma Schnell on an Aubrey Miller RBI double. PC came right back in the bottom half of the first, plating five runs off of Alexis Groet. The highlights were a three-run homer by Elizabeth Van Manen and a two-run single by Ivy Terpstra.

Groet would settle in and post five consecutive scoreless innings with the help of some fantastic defense, namely by Ashley Kindley in right field and Ava VandeWall at first base.

After Kindley scored on a Josie Bunnell sacrifice fly in the 3^rd, Osky came up with three in the top of the 6^th to tie the game. VandeWall would smack a two-run homer after a Bunnell lead-off single to bring the Indians within one. Aubrey Miller would follow with a double, then was sacrified to third by Taylor Wills. After a Meghan Moorman fly-out to left, Schnell uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the tying run to score.

Groet and Schnell would quickly retire the side in the bottom of the 6^th and the top of the 7^th, respectively. PC would send Elizabeth Van Manen to the plate once again to lead off the bottom of the 7^th. On a 2-2 pitch, Van Manen crushed a ball over the centerfield wall for a walk-off solo homer, her second of the night and 6^th of the season.

With the loss, Osky falls to 13-7 overall on the year and 4-6 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Pella Christian improves to 13-2 overall and continues to lead the LHC with a 7-1 conference mark. The two teams will play again next Thursday in a doubleheader in Oskaloosa.

Oskaloosa will face Grinnell on Friday in a conference doubleheader on the road. First pitch is schedule for 6 PM.

The next summer sports broadcast on the No Coast Network is Friday night in Grinnell as the Oskaloosa baseball team looks to get the season sweep with a doubleheader against the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for5:30 PM, and the broadcast will begin at 5:15 on 99.5 FM/740 AM KMZN, radiokmzn.com, and KMZN mobile app.

On this day in 1987, Madonna played the first date on her Who’s That Girl World Tour at the Osaka Stadium in Osaka, Japan. This tour was the second concert tour for Madonna and her first ever world tour.

The tour supported her third studio album True Blue, as well as the soundtrack to Madonna’s film Who’s That Girl. Who’s That Girl was a box office failure, but its soundtrack proved to be a commercial success.

Who’s That Girl tour footage was broadcast in a number of international television channels and was released on VHS as Ciao Italia: Live from Italy.

The tour became the highest-grossing tour ever, grossing over $20 million.

Bob Dylan Accused of Plagiarizing SparkNotes for Nobel Lecture

Bob Dylan has been accused of plagiarism after accepting his Nobel Prize for Literature. The lecture drew on literary themes, but portions of it seemed to take from SparkNotes, an online equivalent to cliff notes.

Andrea Pitzer on Slate was the first to come out with this story, as Pitzer uncovered the similarities between the SparkNotes entry on Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Pitzer dove into the story after writer Ben Greenman noted that Dylan might have made up a quote from Moby-Dick.

The quote in question is “Some men who receive injuries are led to God, others are led to bitterness.”

Pitzer began digging and soon, her research turned up many parallels between Dylan’s speech and the SparkNotes from the book. It seemed many of the phrases from the notes were lifted for his speech, a number of which don’t appear in the actual book.

Dylan’s management nor his label reps were available for comment.

Couple Admits To Hoarding Dogs

Christine Calvert and Mark Vattimo have one of the cuter hoarding problems. The Poway, California couple pleaded guilty to animal neglect after they were found to have more than 170 Yorkshire terriers and Yorkie mixes.

While definitely a fan of Yorkies, Calvert and Vattimo were awful dog owners. The pups were found in terrible condition, but luckily were able to be put up for adoption. Now, the couple faces probation and counseling and can’t own pets for a decade.

Woman Unexpectedly Gives Birth On The Street

A friend was on her way to drive Christine Harvey to the hospital after the Malden, Massachusetts woman complained of being in severe pain. But before her ride could arrive, Harvey went into labor and gave birth to a baby girl on her sidewalk.

“I thought it was her daughter’s doll,” one neighbor said. “No, it’s a baby, a baby.” The neighbors weren’t the only ones surprised by the new arrival. Harvey herself didn’t know she was pregnant.

According to Harvey’s boyfriend Doug Rogers, both mom and baby are doing well. What’s more, neighbors are pitching in to help the new parents who had no time to prepare for their new edition. Congrats to the shell-shocked parents!

Real Life Spider-Man Climbs Hotel Without Ropes

Alain Robert went to the penthouse of Melia Barcelona Sky hotel, but he didn’t use an elevator. Instead, the urban climber, known as the “French Spider-Man,” scaled to the top of the 29-story Spanish hotel without any ropes or harnesses.

Police questioned 54-year-old Robert once he reached the top, but was released without charges. No word yet on what his next climb will be.

Dispute over dog poop gets violent:

Ricardo Garcia Sanchez works, or probably worked, as a property maintenance worker in West Palm Beach, Florida and when he saw a tenant that he thought wasn’t cleaning up after his dog, Sanchez got angry. He grabbed the victim by the neck and began punching him before bringing out a knife. Sanchez ended up slicing his victim on the hand. The unidentified victim was taken to the hospital while Sanchez was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Woman attacks her husband with a glass cross:

This is certainly not what Jesus would do. Tina Abrams was fed up with her husband but instead of talking to him like the 49-year-old she is, the St. Petersburg, Florida resident clobbered her hubby with their glass cross. She reportedly hit her boo multiple times on the head with the religious symbol. He suffered cuts to his right temple and the upper left side of his head. It’s unclear what exactly Abrams was mad about, but she is now facing a felony domestic battery charge.

ICYMI: Woman claims she shoplifted as part of her kleptomania study:

Lydia Marie Cormaney gets an A for effort. The 23-year-old was caught with nearly $1,900 worth of merchandise she was attempting to steal from a Gillette, Washington Walmart. In case you missed it, authorities then found thousands of dollars worth of stolen items in her dorm room. Her excuse? She was working on a term paper on kleptomania. Cops didn’t buy it. Cormaney is now facing three felony shoplifting charges.

Road Worker Killed in Southern Iowa, Authorities Say

CHARITON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a road construction worker has been killed in southern Iowa.

The accident occurred Tuesday in northern Lucas County. The Iowa State Patrol says a motorist didn’t see 48-year-old Barbarella Moore, who was preparing to flag vehicles while another worker cut concrete.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene. She lived in Waterloo.

The motorist was identified as 32-year-old Brady Rasmus, who lives in Chariton.
