On this day in 1969, Elvis Presley began a session that took place between 4 am and 7 am. It took eight takes to produce his final US number one record, ‘Suspicious Minds’. The tracks were laid down at American Sound Studios in Memphis and marked the first time Presley had recorded in his hometown since his Sun Records days in 1956. The song was Certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

Roger Waters Takes To Instagram To Preview His First Album In 25 Years

Roger Waters decided to give his fans a little tease of his first studio album in 25 years.
The former Pink Floyd member posted a brief clip on Instagram of himself in the studio playing bass. He’s sitting at a mixing board with producer Nigel Godrich (who’s worked with Paul McCartney).

In addition to the above clip, Waters posted a photo of himself and Godrich taking a break during the album’s sessions.

William Penn Holds Off #17 Benedictine 93-90 in NAIA Game of the Week

Oskaloosa–Thursday’s NAIA Division I Game of the Week between the fourth-ranked Statesmen men’s basketball team and #17 Benedictine lived up to its billing and them some as William Penn slipped past the Ravens 93-90 in overtime.

The top-25 Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes and was not settled until the final buzzer sounded. With its win and Grand View’s loss to Mount Mercy, William Penn (14-2, 10-2 Heart) takes over sole possession of first place in the league.

The game was tied at 30 with three minutes to go until break, but the Ravens (10-6, 7-5 Heart) finished strong to lead 36-31 at halftime.

The Statesmen deficit was eight points before they found their footing, eventually going ahead by a game-high 10 points at 64-54 with seven minutes on the clock. The hosts seemed in control, but looks were definitely deceiving as BC went on a 14-5 run to draw within one inside of three minutes remaining. The Ravens never recaptured the advantage in the second stanza, but were always within striking distance.

A big trifecta from Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) with 30 seconds left allowed the home crowd to exhale for a moment with WPU up 81-77. Unfortunately, BC’s Andre Yates was a determined, one-man wrecking crew and answered with his own long ball.

A pair of Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) free throws extended the edge back to three, but the game was obviously destined for extra play. Yates’ three-pointer on the other end failed to fall, but teammate Thomas O’Connor was awarded another chance and buried his shot from the corner as the horn went off to force overtime.

WPU pulled away in the early moments of OT with five of the first six points. Not to be outdone, Benedictine answered with six straight and had the Statesmen on their heels, down one inside of the final minute.

Ellison then stepped up and added the final two points of his 29-point evening. Nick Jeffries (Jr., Altoona, Iowa, Exercise Science) finally made his mark in the last two possessions, blocking a BC shot on the opposite end, getting fouled, and draining both charity-strip attempts to make it 93-90 with seven ticks on the clock.

William Penn’s coaching staff wisely chose to implement the fouling strategy, letting Yates dribble to mid-court before fouling him with just two seconds remaining. At best, the thought was that he would only make two free throws, but his first try actually misfired and then he intentionally missed the second shot. The ball was tipped out off of a WPU player, though, providing the Ravens one last opportunity to extend the contest, but fortunately O’Connor’s deep heave was well off-line and the hosts survived.

Both squads shot fairly well with BC winning the category 49.2%-47.5%. The Ravens also fared better on the glass (39-33) and made more three-pointers (10-7). The Statesmen countered with three fewer turnovers (10-13), which led to a 15-9 margin in points off turnovers.

The difference came at the line, though, as William Penn was 28-for-36 (77.8%), while Benedictine was just 18-for-26 (69.2%).

Ellison was 8-for-11 from the field and posted six assists and two steals, but was one-upped offensively by teammate Jarvis Haywood (Sr., Charlotte, N.C., Business Management) and his 33-point effort. Haywood highlighted his performance by going a perfect 11-for-11 at the line.

The Statesmen won despite not getting double-double machine Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) into the action. The senior finished the win with only 10 points and five rebounds.

Medley managed eight points, while Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) added five in the victory.

William Penn has now won three-straight overtime games, dating back to last season; Thursday was the squad’s first overtime game of the year.

“The atmosphere in the gym was awesome tonight!” Head Coach John Henry said. “Our backcourt was amazing and carried us.”

Next Up: Saturday’s game at Missouri Valley has already been postponed due to inclement weather, so the Statesmen will be off until next Wednesday when they travel to Cedar Rapids to face Mount Mercy in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.

Man Ticketed For Leaving A Car Running In His Own Driveway

It turns out leaving your car running in your driveway is a crime in Roseville, Michigan. Nick Taylor claims he left his car on while he ran in the house, he came out five minutes later and had a $125 fine.

Taylor posted a photo of the ticket and his story on Facebook and it went viral, being shared more than 6-thousand times and received more than 5-thousand comments.

Roseville Police Chief James Berlin stands by the ticket because he calls leaving a car running a public safety issue. “A thief can just open the door, and off they go” if a car is running and doesn’t have a remote start system,” Berlin adds. “They typically flee the area at a high rate of speed, we have to chase, and that puts motorists and pedestrians at risk.”

They Need A Part-Time Hermit In Austria

A bit lazy but in need of a new job? Municipal and Roman Catholic church officials in the Austrian town of Saalfelden are in need of a part-time hermit.

The position is only open from April and November because the 350-year-old building is unheated and without running water, but it’s not as easy gig. There are specific qualities the ideal candidate must have. First of all, the person must be “a person at peace with himself.”

Second, they must have a “Christian outlook” and “be ready to greet visiting pilgrims.”

More than 50 pounds of meth found inside a snail statue:

Drug smugglers sure do have interesting taste in sculpture. Customs agents in Cincinnati, Ohio discovered 53-pounds of meth hidden inside a statue of a snail. The vessel was mailed from Mexico and was labeled “Mexican stone crafts.” After going through an X-ray machine, officers noticed the decorative snail statue had “interior anomalies” and drilled a hole inside, discovering the drugs. The package’s final destination was Georgia but at this point, no one is in custody. Source: Associated Press

Restaurant workers fight off burglar with soup ladles:

Do not mess with the people of Chen’s Garden in Brooklyn, New York. One man attempted to rob the place and came face to face employees…and the ladles and kitchen utensils they were waving at the man. If you’re going to go into a life of crime, make sure you’re not too trendy. Isaac Gettleman has was fingered as the one responsible for kicking cars and jumping on side-view mirrors leaving a trail of damage behind on a Pittsburgh street. How was Gettleman identified? His man-bun hairstyle. The 22-year-old is now facing 36 counts of criminal mischief.

Wind Farm Projects Announced

DES MOINES — In a news release, MidAmerican Energy plans to build new wind farms in Boone, Greene and Mahaska counties in Iowa. The two new wind farms will be the first Wind XI project sites selected for construction.

MidAmerican Energy plans to begin construction in April on the Beaver Creek wind project in Boone and Greene counties and the Prairie wind project in Mahaska County, with completion scheduled for the end of 2017. According to the release, the wind farms are part of MidAmerican
Energy’s Wind XI project and will add 338 megawatts of new wind generation capacity in Iowa: the Beaver Creek wind project will consist of 85
turbines, which will add 170 megawatts of wind generation capacity and the Prairie wind project will have 84 turbines and add 168 megawatts of
wind generation capacity.

MidAmerican Energy announced plans in April 2016 to invest $3.6 billion for the Wind XI project. It is the largest economic development investment in Iowa’s history. The project calls for the construction of 1,000 wind turbines that will add 2,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity in Iowa.

The company is working with developers, county officials and landowners at potential wind farm sites in other Iowa counties for the balance of the Wind XI project, according to the news release. Construction on these projects would start in 2018 and 2019, and sites will be announced at a later date. Construction on the entire Wind XI project is expected to be complete by December 2019.

“MidAmerican Energy is not asking for an increase in customer rates or financial assistance from the state to pay for the Wind XI project,” said Bill Fehrman, president and CEO of MidAmerican Energy via news release. “For our customers, the benefits of Wind XI are very clear: clean energy produced right here in Iowa, using an abundant natural resource. We believe the best way to meet the energy needs of our customers is to provide safe, reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible energy.”

The Wind XI project is expected to produce $1.2 billion in economic benefits for Iowa communities as a result of landowner easements and property tax payments over the next 40 years. Additionally, during construction thousands of jobs are expected to be added to Iowa’s economy and hundreds
of new permanent jobs will be added when the expansion is complete.According to the news

According to the news release, with its investment in the Wind XI project, MidAmerican Energy’s wind generation each year will be equal to 85 percent of the energy used by our retail customers in Iowa, bringing us within striking distance of our 100 percent renewable energy vision.

Funds Are Needed To Restore Digital Sign

The Oskaloosa Indians digital sign on A Ave. West has been dark for some time, and it will remain dark for a while longer.

Oskaloosa High School (OHS) students are about a third of the way to the $30,000 goal to get the sign functional, according to student council member Leah Van Maanen. The funds are needed to replace the obsolete inner workings of the sign. So far $11,185.70 has been raised, said business education teacher Kim Gile, who is also student council advisor.

“We’ve sent letters out to local businesses to see if they would like to contribute to our fund,” said Van Maanen. “It kind of effects the whole community.” The timeline to get the sign in working order is “as fast as possible,” she added. “It’s been a little while since we’ve done fundraising [for it].”

Van Maanen said bake sales, yard signs and the blind volleyball game in February are just a few of the ways the student council raises funds for the sign. Gile mentioned a fun new activity for the high school students to participate in.

“We’re going to do Mr. and Mrs. Cupid. We have couples — they don’t have to be a couple, but just whoever — and you can take around an ice cream bucket, and you can decorate it however and you just ask for donations,” she said. “It’s just a way to help raise money, and they can ask people in the community to help contribute and it’s all going to go toward the sign.”

Gile wanted to be sure to thank the community for helping and participating.

“They help us a lot in a lot of things,” she said. “They support us wholeheartedly when we do crazy stuff at games.”

“The Joker” reached #1 on the UK chart in 1990 after being used in a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi’s.

Ace Frehley Teases KISS Reunion

Original KISS member Ace Frehley has been asked throughout the years about a reunion with the band and the speculation has revved up through 2016 and on into 2017. The guitarist was quoted as saying “2017 seems like a ripe year. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Frehley has recently said he was open to reuniting with fellow original members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons for a potential farewell tour. “If it was handled correctly, it could be great,” he said.

In a new interview with Louder Noise, Space Ace offered a brief, positive and non-committal update. “I haven’t heard anything from Paul and Gene, but if it’s going to happen it should happen next year, I’d assume,” he said.

Frehley played his last show with KISS in April 2001. Stanley said last June that he was delighted with the “joy and satisfaction in reconnecting” with his former colleague, Paul Stanley, on Frehley’s album Origins, but when asked about a reunion he said, “I don’t see it.”

Simmons has added more fuel to the fire, posting a picture on Instagram showing the band’s original lineup.

Cop Gets Surgeon And Donated Liver To Transplant Surgery After Car Accident

When Pennsylvania cop Darrick Keppley responded to a call about a car accident last weekend, he got what he expected: finding a disabled vehicle that had skidded off the icy road. What he didn’t expect? Finding a surgeon and a donated liver inside. Turns out, the doc had been en route to a Philadelphia hospital – 60 miles away – to perform a liver transplant.

There wasn’t any time to waste – as the patient waiting for that liver was already in the operating room. So the Keppley offered to drive the doctor, the doc’s assistant, and the organ to the facility. The good news? Thanks to Keppley’s lights and sirens, everyone made it there safely.

The best news? The surgery reportedly went “very, very well.”

Man Chokes To Death On Eggs After Taking $6 Bet

David Mitchell was done in by a bet. The English man was enjoying his Saturday lunch and beer at the White Hart Inn when three construction workers came in and ended up betting him $6 he couldn’t eat four pickled eggs in one minute.

Mitchell took the bet and ended up getting all four eggs in his mouth before admitting defeat. The 66-year-old paid the men, who then left. According to bartender Barry Wiggins, he asked Mitchell if he wanted to spit out the eggs, but he refused. Then, Mitchell choked, collapsed at the bar, and died.

The craziest part? Mitchell’s wife Carol wasn’t surprised. “It was pickled eggs wasn’t it?” she reportedly told police. “It’s just the sort of thing he would do.”

Teen Locks Herself In Abandoned Jail Cell

Teenagers do stupid things all the time, but accidentally getting locked inside a jail? That’s new. A pair of teen girls crawled through a hole in the fence at the now abandoned Joliet Correctional Center to do a little exploring. Then, one of the unnamed minors managed to get herself locked inside one of the cells.

The girls called the fire department who responded and used a sledgehammer to break through a brick wall to free the girl. All in all, the teenager served 45-minutes behind bars.

Now, both the adventurous ladies will face trespassing charges.

Man drives onto median because his GPS told him to:

You should need to take an IQ test before getting behind the wheel. That’s the only way to avoid people like the man in Queens, New York who drove his car right onto a sloped concrete divider…because his GPS told him to. The man’s car had to be towed off the divider and away from the scene. Cops were on the scene, but it’s unclear if the driver, who understandably chose not to give his name, is facing any charges.

Naked man claims he broke into house to get sesame seeds for his hamburger:

Martin R. Henderson admitted to Largo, Florida police he had been smoking Spice (aka synthetic marijuana), before breaking into a house and using a butter knife to pry open the door. Oh, and he was naked at the time. Why’d he break in? Henderson told authorities he wanted to “get sesame seeds for his hamburger.”

Two crooks in Brazil who stole electronics equipment while dressed as ghosts are going viral. The two men wore white sheets over their head with eyes cut out as they made multiple trips to a waiting car with different computers and printers in their hands. New Year of Eggs & Issues Forums Kicks Off Saturday

OSKALOOSA — Area residents and the elected officials that represent them will come together again beginning Saturday when the traditional winter-time Eggs & Issues forum returns to Smokey Row.

Margaret Ratcliff, board president of the Oskaloosa Area Chamber & Development Group, recently released the lineup, dates and time for this
year’s six forums. The forum is held at 8:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of the month during January, February and March.

Ratcliff said the OACDG has been sponsoring and holding the Eggs & Issues forums for many years, and the morning talks with elected officials
usually draws a large crowd to Smokey Row.

“We want to give residents an opportunity to talk to their representatives face to face,” Ratcliff said. “It also gives those leaders an opportunity to provide an update on what’s going on in their area.”

The first edition of the Eggs & Issues is set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the forum will feature three local officials: Oskaloosa Mayor David Krutzfeldt;
Mark Doland, the chairman of the Mahaska County Board of Supervisors; and Oskaloosa Community School District Superintendent Russ Reiter.

The forums feature the invited public and elected officials speaking on issues in their areas before the forum is opened up for questions and answers, Ratcliff said. Attendees to the forum will be treated to free coffee during the one-hour forum, provided as a courtesy by MidwestOne Bank. Other guests for future Eggs & Issues forums include, State Rep. Guy Vander Linden, State Sen. Ken Rozenboom and State Rep. Larry Sheets.

Although all three of those guests are Republicans, Ratcliff said the OACDG hopes to have some alternative views represented in future forums.

“Our goal is to have differing views discussed,” she said. On Feb. 25, the invited guest is Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, which is an exciting development for the organizers of the forum, Ratcliff said. “I’m really hoping [Northey] brings some farmers to town,” she said.

The forums are very popular with residents and officials who speak, and they are covered heavily by local media, including on the internet, radio, TV and in print, Ratcliff added.

“[Public officials] Really appreciate the opportunity to have a venue and to share information,” she said. “They can bring correct information
to residents. It’s a great opportunity to clear up any misinformation.”
