John Lennon, Yoko Ono Documentary Exploring Time As Talk Show Hosts Headed To Theaters

A documentary about the week that John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-hosted the daytime TV talk show, “The Mike Douglas Show,” in early 1972, is headed to theaters.

Kino Lorber, which has acquired North American distribution rights to Daytime Revolution, announced that the film will be released in more than 50 theaters across the U.S. on October 9. The release coincides with Lennon’s 84th birthday.

Directed by Emmy and IDA Award-winning filmmaker Erik Nelson, with creative consultation from Yoko Ono and Sean Ono Lennon, Daytime Revolution features archival footage from each of the five episodes as well as interviews with six of the original guests, all reconstructing the music, the magic, and the behind-the-scenes madness of this unprecedented and historic week of television.

The theatrical release of the film will be followed by a home video, educational, and digital release on all major platforms.

“Daytime Revolution takes us back in time, as we observe John and Yoko interacting with a transfixed studio audience in revealing Q and A sessions where John Lennon was astonishingly candid about his life after the Beatles,” says a press release. “John and Yoko also got to pick the guests, some very controversial at the time, like [anti-war activist and Yippie] Jerry Rubin and Black Panther Bobby Seale, as well as Ralph Nader and George Carlin. In addition, the shows featured blazing musical performances, including an epic duet with Chuck Berry, and a poignant rendition of the now classic ‘Imagine.’ Conceptual art events and even cooking segments were woven into the crazy fabric of the format.”

Director Erik Nelson said the team behind Daytime Revolution “made a conscious decision to hold back release until the Election fall of 2024, as we felt very strongly that the film’s optimistic and idealistic message would be a far more welcome ‘letter from home’ the closer we got to what promised to be an apocalyptic and tension filled November 5th. We were clearly right in that assumption!”
