The Oskaloosa Indians Baseball Team defeated the Winterset Huskies 8-1 in a game that ended early due to lightning on Friday night.
Lightning struck just before the top of the 7th inning leading the Huskies, facing an 8-1 deficit, to concede the game early. Oskaloosa dominated in all facets of the game, cruising to victory.
The scoring started in the bottom of the first when Senior Blake VanVeldhuizen stepped up to the plate and crushed a ball to right-center field, bringing in two runs. Oskaloosa would enter the second inning with a 4-0 lead.
The Indians would not end up needing all that insurance however, as Junior Rian Yates and Sophomore Noah VanVeldhuizen both delivered solid pitching performances.
Yates would come up with the win after pitching 4 innings and allowing 1 run to score. VanVeldhuizen came in in relief to pitch two scoreless innings.
Another highlight of the night includes Nick Harrington’s solo-shot over the left field wall to leadoff the 5th inning that gave Oskaloosa its eighth run of the ballgame.
With the win, Oskaloosa finishes an opening week in which they played six games in four days. The Indian will get a much-needed break next week however, as they don’t play again until Wednesday when they’re on the road to take on the Grinnell Tigers.
Oskaloosa’s next baseball game on the No Coast Network will be when the Dallas-Center Grimes Mustangs come to Oskaloosa for a Varsity double-header on June 1. Coverage will begin at 5:30 p.m. on 99.5 FM KMZN.
