Day One of the 2018 High School Boys State Track Meet is over, with day two underway today. The Osky Boys team sent multiple athletes to compete. Here’s what Osky Boys Track & Field Coach Mike Sterner had to say about day one:
“What a beautiful day to run! After all the miserable weather to start our season it is especially great to have the weather we do for our kids to compete at the State CoEd meet this weekend. Today our Boys team had two races, the shuttle hurdle relay and discus.
Jaden VanRoekel continued to lead this group, as he was in the lead after nine hurdles in the shuttle hurdle relay. Unfortunately there are 10 sets. Jaden clipped the 9th, then made an incredible recovery and leap to clear hurdle 10, finishing his leg with grit, determination, and a little blood, which kept Nik Dykstra in the race for the second leg. Nik had a very strong leg setting a new PR, racing in to get our third runner, freshman Reed Brown, off and running. Reed maintained our spot, and our anchor was off and running. Dylan VanLeuven anchored a very solid leg and the team almost battled back to 3rd in the heat. Although the team was disappointed that they could not get into the finals with a time of 62.83, they felt very good about their efforts and experience on the Blue Oval today.
Casey Hill gained some great experience and now has a new normal baseline for the discus. After breaking his old PR best last week by 14 feet to throw 144’10” Today Casey maintained this new mark of expectation hitting multiple throws at the 140 feet mark. Casey finished in 19th place today with a throw of 142′ 0″.
We are excited for day 2 Friday with more beautiful weather and pride-filled performances, as Jaden VanRoekel is back to race in the 110 Hurdles and the 4×400 team of Carter Huyser, Talon Munger, Shane Hoven, and Brayden VanKampen competes Friday night.”
