Deep Purple have charged their longtime accountant of stealing $4.9 million from the band in royalties. The band’s accountant, Dipak Shanker Rao has worked with the band since 1994 and has admitted to “borrowing” at least $2.8 million, according to The Times of London.
England’s High Court froze Rao’s assets this week after the band filed suit over the alleged misappropriation of funds from Deep Purple (Overseas) Ltd. and HEC Enterprises., who control the copyrights to Deep Purple’s discography and associated acts like Rainbow and Whitesnake. Both entities are now in bankruptcy.
The band hopes to gain some financial stability with their upcoming album InFinite and a tour to follow.
