Wednesday (9/1) was opening day for two William Penn sports teams. The Statesmen women’s golf team won their invitational at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa with a 33 over par 317 score—with a Statesmen B team coming in second, four strokes back. There was a four way tie for medalist honors with Olivia Lange of William Penn’s A team and Julia Hippely of the Statesmen B team among those who shot 77.
The Statesmen women’s volleyball team also opened their season Wednesday with a 3-0 victory at Hannibal-La Grange…winning by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21. Corrin Lepper had 14 kills to lead the Statesmen. William Penn’s women’s volleyball team will host their Labor Day tournament Saturday and Sunday (9/4 & 5).
Switching to soccer, the Statesmen men were ten minutes away from upsetting eighth-ranked Bellevue Wednesday. Then Bellevue’s Antonio Capra scored twice to tie the game at 2, then Capra scored the winner 3:18 into overtime to give Bellevue a 3-2 win. Joseph Kitengie scored both William Penn goals. The Statesmen men are now 2-2 on the year.
The Statesmen women’s soccer team doubled Waldorf 4-2 with Taylor Witthauer scoring twice and assisting on another goal. William Penn’s women are now 2-1 on the season.
