Round One of the Iowa High School Football Playoffs were Wednesday, and there were some outstanding matchups that had surprising results.
In Class 3A, Pella held serve by dominating Fairfield, 56-7. The Little Dutch cruised to their 24th straight win and will now face Creston (6-4) at home in the second round on Monday.
Also in Class 3A, Washington squandered a 7 point lead late, and fell in overtime to Solon, 17-14.
In Class 2A, top ranked Albia jumped all over Iowa Falls-Alden en route to a 56-0 blowout win. Mid-Prairie went to Monroe and upset PCM on the road, 28-10. That sets up another all-area matchup with the Blue Demons and the Golden Hawks. That game will be in Albia on Monday.
In Class 1A, Sigourney/Keota fell to Hudson, 28-26. S/K fell behind early and couldn’t catch a break with several elements of the game. Their season ends at 6-4. Pella Christian went on the road and got a win over Wilton, 42-24. PC trailed by ten points at the half, but came out on fire in the second half to put Wilton away. Pella Christian will face unbeaten West Branch on Monday on the road.
In Class A, top ranked BGM destroyed Danville, 48-7. They will host Lisbon (8-2) on Monday in Round Two. Also in Class A, Pleasantville protected the home-field against Belmond-Klemme, getting a 27-6 victory. They will host Gladbrook-Reinbeck (8-2) in the second round on Monday.
Also in Class A, Lynnville-Sully outlasted Pekin in an instant classic, 36-34. The Hawks got off to a fast start, but Pekin held right there with them. The Panthers had a chance with one minute left to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but Lynnville-Sully stopped them and recovered the ensuing onside kick to get the upset win. Lynnville-Sully will travel to unbeaten Winfield-Mount Union for Round Two on Monday.
The last Class A matchup in the area saw Montezuma pull a big upset on the road at Maquoketa Valley. The long trip was nothing for Monte, as they pulled a rare #4 seed win over a district champion. Montezuma will be playing Denver (9-1) on the road on Monday in the second round.
Finally, in 8-Player football, Moravia pulled away from Murray after going to the half tied, resulting in a 64-26 final. Moravia will face Colo-Nesco (8-2) in a huge matchup at home in Round Two. Twin Cedars fell in their playoff game on the road at unbeaten Lenox, 60-26.
Round Two is on Monday night, with all of the area games starting at 7 PM.
