The State high school softball tournament is under way in Fort Dodge. In Class 1A, Newell-Fonda defeated Lynnville-Sully7-5 Monday (7/22) in the quarterfinals. Carson Fisk and Mallory Loftus had two hits and two RBI apiece for the Hawks. The Hawks also committed four errors that led to three unearned runs. Denali Conover was the losing pitcher. Lynnville-Sully is now 26-9 on the season. The Hawks will play Gehlen Catholic Tuesday (7/23) in a consolation game.
In Class 3A Monday night, Waterloo Columbus Catholic defeated Albia 8-5. Columbus scoring three times in the top of the sixth inning for the victory. Alex Beard hit a grand slam for the Lady D’s; Makenna Jones was the losing pitcher. Albia is now 27-5 on the year; they’ll wrap up their season this afternoon against Algona in the consolation round.
Tuesday afternoon, the Oskaloosa Indians will get their turn at State. The Indians take on North Scott in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Indians Coach Jay Harms talks about North Scott.
“Look at their stats, very similar to us. They play in a very tough conference, They play a lot of 5A schools in their conference. Another softball tradition. We played North Scott many times at Iowa City over the years. It’s a team that likes to put pressure on the defense. They like to run, they’re very aggressive, they have some hitters, they have some power hitters.”
