With the Southern Iowa Fair in full swing the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway played host to the Caleb Hammond Memorial presented by Nutrien Ag Solutions, Dekalb and Asgrow. 109 race teams packed the infield for an action packed night of racing action.
For the first time in a few year the Modifieds were in action on the big half mile and a stellar field of 20 drivers took part in the action all looking to claim the $2,000 win plus bonus’. Jerod Fuller from Memphis, Missouri accepted Scotty Miller’s pole challenge and started the 30 lap feature from the tail, simply by accepting the challenge Fuller received $300 with another $700 possible by advancing into the top three finishing positions. The 30 lap main took the green with Bruce Hanford leading the field into turn one. Hanford would go on to lead the first 12 circuits before having a caution erase a comfortable lead. Cayden Carter had advanced in to the second position from a fifth row start and when the race restarted Carter pressured Hanford and took the lead before the race reached the midway point. Carter would go on to lead the last 18 laps scoring the win ahead of Todd Schute and Hanford.
The Flying Farmer, Damon Murty took the lead at the dropping of the green in the Midstate Machine Stock Car Feature and went on to lead every lap despite the constant challenges of Todd Reitzler and Cayden Carter. The three hot shoes ran in a tight bunch the entire race with second position being swapped several times. The finish saw all three cross under the checkers with less than a car length separating them.
The Oskaloosa Quality Rental Sportmods saw a stout field of 22 drivers take the green for their Caleb Hammond Memorial race. Brayton Carter drew the front row and proved to be up to the constant challenges of Logan Anderson in scoring a hard fought win. Anderson was able to show Carter his nose on several occasions but Carter drove a perfect race in taking the win.
The Parker Tree Service Hobby Stocks also saw a large field of drivers take the initial green. Mike Hughes advanced from a third row start to join the lead pack which included Christian Huffman and Clint Nelson. Hughes took over the point as the raced neared the halfway mark and went on to score the win over Nelson and Dustin Griffiths, who made a late race charge to join the leaders.
The Autocrafters Sport Compact win went to Norway, Iowa’s Nathan Chandler who made his first visit of the season to the Southern Iowa Speedway. Chandler collected a total of $600 for the win including a $100 bonus from Kris Long for being a winner in his first appearance in 2019 at SIS. Chandler advanced from his third row start taking the lead form Brandon Allison. At the checkers it was Chandler, Barry Taft and Trent Orwig taking the top three spots.
The wingless Sprints 10 lap feature saw Jonathan Hayes make a late race charge to score his second consecutive win at SIS. Hughes chased down leader Josh Most following a late race caution to score the win.
The racing season at the Southern Iowa Speedway has been extended by two weeks due to all the early season rain outs. Racing in five classes will be held on Wednesday, July 24th and Season Championships will be run on Wednesday, July 31st. Hot laps will get underway at 7 pm with racing to follow.
