Orwig Wins Thriller At SIS, Carter, Griffiths & Vanderwal Also Winners
Oskaloosa, Iowa: Wednesday May, 15th saw the return of racing to the Musco Lighting Southern Iowa Speedway. After four rain outs in the first five nights of the 2019 season the weatherman provided a perfect night for racing on Mahaska and Kool Seamless Gutter Kids night a the races. The kids were given rides in race cars before the races and a huge candy scramble sent the kids home with loads of candy.
The ten lap Autocrafters Sport compact feature provided the fans with a photo finish to decide the winner. The early leader, Brandon Wilson was challenged the entire main event by 5th starting Trent Orwig. The two leaders traded paint and raced side by side lap after lap. Coming to the checkers the leaders were dead even, as the two crossed under the checkers it was determined that Orwig scored the win by the narrowest of margins.
The Oskaloosa Quality Rentals Sportmods main event took the green with Cory VanZante leading the field into turn one. Jason Hall quickly overtook VanZante for the point position only to be overtaken by Curtis Vanderwal, who advanced from the third row. Vanderwal went on to score a comfortable win over Carter VanDenberg and Blaine Webster.
The Midstate Machine Stock Cars ran flag to flag on Wednesday night and when the checkered flag fell it was the familiar 10CC of Cayden Carter scoring the win. Carter started fifth and quickly worked to the front easily out distancing the second place finisher of Derrick Agee.
The Parker Tree Service Hobby Stocks capped off an exciting night of racing with a hotly contested feature event. Dustin Griffiths started back in the fifth row and steadily worked his way to the front to take part in the battle for the lead that included Derek Kirkland and Clint Nelson. The three ran in a tightly bunched pack as the laps wound down. At the checkers it was Griffiths taking the hard fought win ahead of Kirkland.
The SIS continues to provide a very affordable night at the races and the show is run very quickly. The entire race program was only slowed by two caution flags the entire night and was completed at 9:15 pm.
Wednesday, May 22nd will be KBOE radio Bike night a the Speedway with all youngsters having an opportunity to win a new bicycle. Hot laps will take to the track at 7 pm with racing to follow hot laps.
