Stevie Nicks, Chris Cornell on 2018 Oscar ‘Shortlist’

Next year’s Oscar ceremony could include a bittersweet honor for Chris Cornell — and another opportunity for Stevie Nicks to add to an already impressive collection of awards.

Cornell and Nicks are both among the 70 finalists vying for consideration in the Academy Awards’ list of Best Original Song nominees for the year. The Academy’s shortlist has been unveiled in advance of the Oscar polls opening on Jan. 5; voting for members will last for a week, after which the nominations will be announced on Jan. 23.

In the meantime, voters are invited to consider Cornell’s “The Promise” — the final recording he released during his lifetime and a passion project for the Soundgarden singer, who was moved to contribute the song after being inspired by the real-life story behind the movie of the same name, which dramatizes a love triangle against the backdrop of the Armenian genocide.

“I married into a Greek family and I’ve heard stories about my wife’s grandparents, who were actually refugees, as little kids, from the same conflict,” Cornell said in an interview before his death earlier this year. “So, it was partly that, and partly just the idea of being able to write a song for a film that has some emotional weight to it and some historical significance, especially on the denial side of it. In a strange way, denial can almost keep an instance like this alive, with the way that we communicate now. It’s a conflict that exists today because the denial exists.”

Nicks, meanwhile, made the shortlist thanks to “Your Hand I Will Never Let It Go,” a song she contributed to the soundtrack for Colin Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry. Like The Promise, The Book of Henry didn’t fare particularly well with critics or audiences, but it marks one of a couple studio projects Nicks made time for this year while touring behind her 24 Karat Gold solo album and booking a handful of appearances with Fleetwood Mac.

The 2018 Oscars are scheduled to be held March 4 in Los Angeles, with the ceremony telecast live on ABC.

Fleetwood Mac Announce Farewell Tour

The members of Fleetwood Mac have been busy recently, with Stevie Nicks releasing new solo music, along with Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie releasing their new collaboration Buckingham/McVie which also features Mick Fleetwood and John McVie.

The group will reunite twice this year to co-headline the Classic East and Classic West festivals alongside The Eagles. The bi-coastal jaunts will take place in New York and Los Angeles this July.

While the band may not be making new material, they are making headlines after McVie revealed a world tour on BBC’s The One Show over the weekend, “We’re going to start rehearsing in March next year, the tour is around June. It will be global.”

McVie explained the upcoming tour may be the end of the road for Fleetwood Mac. “The 2018 Tour is supposed to be a farewell tour,” the musician said. “But you take farewell tours one at a time. Somehow we always come together, this unit. We can feel it ourselves.”

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie Release Behind-the-Scenes Documentary

With their upcoming album, Buckingham/McVie, releasing on June 9th, former Fleetwood Mac members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie have released a documentary about the making of their album.

The behind-the-scenes documentary shows an inside look at the studio sessions that included former bandmates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The project originally was set to be a new Fleetwood album, before Stevie Nicks backed out. After Nicks departure, Buckingham and McVie decided to continue working on this project. They would record the album at Village Studios in Los Angeles, where Fleetwood Mac had recorded multiple albums, including Tusk.

Buckingham and McVie will embark on a short North American tour in support of Buckingham/McVie this summer. On top of that, the duo will perform with the rest of Fleetwood Mac in New York City & Los Angeles for the bi-coastal festival, Classic East and Classic West Festival.

As Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie prepare to release their new album, the duo has put out their first track “In My World”.

The song has a Fleetwood Mac feel, which isn’t surprising since the album originally was to be the follow-up to the band’s last album, Tango in the Night. The album includes John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, leaving Stevie Nicks as the only former Mac member not on the album.

Buckingham & McVie Announce Concert Together

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie have been trying to make a new Fleetwood Mac album for the last three years. After writing together for the album and Stevie Nicks’ deciding to not participate, they’re releasing it on their own. They’ve also decided to perform together outside of the group.

They are booked to play the amphitheatre at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Washington, on July 19th.
Tickets are currently on sale at Ticketmaster, and they’ll cost $59.50 for the lawn and $99.50 for the pavillion. The show will take place only three days after Fleetwood Mac perform at Classic West, a two-day festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. At this time, it’s unknown if Buckingham and McVie will announce any other dates leading up to or after Fleetwood Mac’s Classic East slot on July 30.
The duo’s album is expected to be titled Buckingham McVie.

“We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I,” Christine said, “and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us.”
Rumor has it that the album features contributions from John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Fleetwood praised the record last week.

“It came under the heading of music that had to come out. Chris is full of vim and vigor, which is mind-blowing, and I’m really happy for Lindsey, because this is what he most likes to do – putting something together. This relationship is a real expression of a musical powerhouse that’s come to the fore, and we’re all happy about that. It’s really cool. I think they’ll be walking down some red carpets with this one.”

Stevie Nicks Doesn’t See The Need For Another Fleetwood Mac Album

Stevie Nicks just doesn’t see the benefit of another Fleetwood Mac album.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Nicks said, “I don’t think there’s any reason to spend a year and an amazing amount of money on a record that, even if it has great things, isn’t going to sell.”

“I don’t think we’ll do another record. If the music business were different, I might feel different,” she added. “What we do is go on the road, do a ton of shows and make lots of money. We have a lot of fun. Making a record isn’t all that much fun.”

Nicks also explained the situation with the planned Fleetwood Mac album being turned into a side project record by Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVietha, with help from the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie.

Last year, Fleetwood said the recording of the group’s album was delayed by Nicks solo tour.

“I’ve been on the road since last September, so I don’t understand their premise,” Nicks said. “Christine was gone [from Fleetwood Mac] for 16 years and came back, did a massive tour, and then it’s like, “Now I’m just gonna go back to London and sit in my castle for two years”? She wanted to keep working.

“I will be back with them at the end of the year for, I think, another tour,” Nicks said. “I just needed my two years off. Until then, I wish them the best in whatever they do.”

“When you’re in a band, you have to be part of the team,” she told Rolling Stone. “There’s something comforting about that. But in my solo career, I get to be the boss. Having both, for a Gemini like myself, is perfect. And I knew that in 1981: that me having a solo career would only make Fleetwood Mac better.”
