On this day in 1975, Elton John was at #1 on the US singles chart with his cover of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” originally by the Beatles. This would give John his third #1 in the US.

The song featured The Beatles’ John Lennon on backing vocals and guitar by John Lennon. He used the pseudonym Dr. Winston O’Boogie (Winston being Lennon’s middle name).

The song was Certified Gold by the RIAA.

Chicago And The Doobie Brothers Heading On Tour

Chicago and the Doobie Brothers are hitting the road together this summer, as the bands share co-headlining dates.

The shows are currently scheduled to begin in early June and run through July. This isn’t the first time the bands have parented up on the road, doing multiple joint tours through the years.

Statesmen Tied for #30

Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s basketball team will open up its post-holiday slate in a favorable position as the NAIA Division I top-25 poll was released Tuesday.

The Statesmen (8-4, 6-2 Heart), who are off to their best start since 2010-2011, picked up three positions from the last ranking to be unofficially tied for 30th with eight points. It is the highest WPU has been ranked since also being #30 on February 19, 2013.

The navy and gold are one of five teams from the Heart of America Athletic Conference in the poll. MidAmerica Nazarene is #5, while #14 Baker, #16 Central Methodist, and #19 Benedictine are rated as well.

Freed Hardeman (Tenn.) continues to be #1 with 250 points and nine first-place votes. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) is second with the final top nod, while Westmont (Calif.), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), and MidAmerica Nazarene round out the top five.

A New York City firefighter found two streetcar tickest dating back to 2017 in the firehouse basement

A New York City firefighter got a blast from the past when he found two streetcar tickets in the basement of his firehouse.

The tickets, which date back to September 14th, 1917, were found inside a tin cup along with a dusty pack of cigarettes.

The person who discovered the pieces of history wants to remain anonymous, but has plans to figure out who exactly left those tickets. He’s going to cross reference the date and the journals recording all of the firemen who worked in the company and on what days they worked.

A baggage handler was stuck inside a plane’s cargo area for an entire hour-and-a-half-long flight

Reginald Gaskin did not have a good weekend. In case you missed it, the baggage handler at North Carolina’s Charlotte-Douglas Airport took an unplanned trip to Washington D.C….after he got locked inside a plane’s cargo hold.

Gaskin’s coworkers reportedly became aware he was possibly trapped inside the plane once it had already taken off. An hour-and-22-minutes later, the plane with Gaskin inside landed at Washington Dulles International Airport and the baggage handler was rescued.

He’s reportedly uninjured and an investigation has been launched.

Daredevil tried jumping from a roof to a pool, broke his legs, and set up crowdfunding page to help cover his medical bills

Youtuber 8Booth is known for his crazy stunts, most of which involve jumping off cliffs or rooftops into swimming pools or oceans. His latest jump may of been his last though. He tried to go from a hotel roof into the nearby pool but missed by a few feet. He ended up landing in the water, but not before his legs crashed into the surrounding concrete.

8Booth survived and is recovering in the hospital, but as you might expect, he’s racked up a ton of medical bills…$274-thousand worth, to be exact.

The daredevil has since set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs. As he explains, he needs $10-thousand for “a little support to keep doing what I’m doing or else I’ll be working the rest of my life to pay this off.” So far, 8Booth managed to raise over $11-hundred.

Man sick of waiting to see a doctor pulls out a gun:

Listen, no one enjoys a long wait at the doctor’s office. Still, that doesn’t mean you can pull a gun out. A 21-year-old man walked into a Cypress, Texas hospital asking for an X-ray. According to the hospital, he refused to take off his clothes for examination and left the room. Then, he pulled out his gun and fired multiple shots into the ceiling. No one was hurt, and the unidentified man fled. Later, a pair of cops found the man outside and claim instead of putting his weapon down, he pointed it at them. The perp was shot multiple times but survived. He’s expected to face multiple charges.

Two men pull guns during a fight over a parking spot:

We all know how annoying it can be to find a parking spot. For two men in Phoenix, Arizona’s Metrocenter Mall it was gunfight territory. After one of the unidentified men showed off a handgun to the guy he was arguing with, the second man brandished his own handgun. The first man fled, but police found him soon after. No charges have been filed yet, but an investigation is ongoing.

Drunk guy does a bellyflop onto a cop car windshield:

Cody James Romano knows how to do a mean bellyflop, but unfortunately for him, he decided to do one onto a cop car’s windshield. On top of that, there was a Menasha, Wisconsin officer in the car at the time and after a brief scuffle, he was able to arrest Romano. The 25-year-old admitted he had been drinking. He’s currently facing a bunch of charges including battery to a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, and criminal damage to property. As for the windshield, it was destroyed.

Mahaska Health Partnership Announces Their 2017 New Year’s Baby

MAHASKA COUNTY – Thatcher Robert Poe was born at 1:07 pm on Jan. 1, 2017, making him Mahaska Health Partnership’s 2017 New Year’s Baby.

Thatcher weighed 8 lbs., 15 oz., and was 20 ½ inches long. His parents are Elizabeth Gardner and Slater Poe of Albia. His grandparents are Vicki Gardner, Tim Gardner and Pam Poe, all of Albia. His great grandparents are John and Margaret Pasut of Albia and Ray Gardner and Carol Gardner of Albia.

Thatcher was delivered by Family Practice Physician Case Everett, MD. A week past his due date, instead of a Christmas baby he became the 2017 New Year’s Baby. But that’s OK with Mom, who got to spend her own birthday (Jan. 2) in the hospital with Thatcher.

“We have a healthy, beautiful baby boy, and it’s the best birthday gift I ever received,” Elizabeth said.

As MHP’s first baby of 2017, Thatcher received a basket full of gifts from MHP and Whispering Tree Gifts, the Hospital Auxiliary’s gift shop located just inside Entrance #4 on the MHP campus.

Heart’s Nancy Wilson Collaborating With Former New Power Generation Member

Founding Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson is launching a new side project with Liv Warfield, a former member of Prince’s backing group New Power Generation. The project will be called Roadcase.

Wilson’s posted on her Facebook page, three other Heart members — drummer Ben Smith, bassist Dan Rothchild and keyboardist Chris Joyner, will be part of the project.

Wilson and Warfield both posted a photo of them together, along with the note, “Brand new year. New friends. New music… #Roadcase.”

Flight Attendants Lose Their Minds Because Of ‘Toxic Fumes’

Back in October, news broke that on a British Airways flight from San Francisco to London, things took a weird turn when “toxic fumes” effected nearly two dozen crew members. Now, we’re getting some more details.

Thanks to those fumes getting in the cabin, flight attendants reportedly began babbling, stuffing food in their mouths and forgetting where they were. The group were given oxygen and pilots called for an emergency landing in Vancouver, Canada. Once on the ground, all attendants and three pilots were rushed to a nearby hospital.

We still don’t have any word on whether any passengers were effected, but the crew is reportedly recovered just fine.

Twins Born In Different Years Thanks To Surprise Delivery

Holly and Brandon Shay were expecting to welcome their twin boys into the world in a few weeks. Instead, they rang in 2017 in their local Glendale, Arizona hospital and thanks to the holiday, their boys not only have different birthdays, but different birth years.

Sawyer was born at 11:51pm on December 31st, 2016. Everett followed 10 minutes later at 12:01am on January 1st, 2017.

“I think Sawyer might give his brother a hard time,” says proud papa Brandon. “I think it’s mostly going to be Sawyer teasing Everett over him being the eldest.”

Tourist Bitten By An Alligator…After She Tried To Take A Selfie With It

Who says stupid selfie taking is only for millennials? A 41-year-old French woman was visiting a park in Thailand with her husband when they spotted the perfect photo op: a seemingly ‘harmless’ alligator.

In case you missed it, the couple crouched down near the gator for a selfie, ignoring multiple signs warning to stay on marked paths and not to stray. Then, the gator bit down on the woman’s leg.

The unidentified tourist was rushed to the hospital, but her current condition is unknown.

STUPID CRIMINALS:

Handcuffed, supposedly drunk teen rides off in a cop car:

Dekota Locklear was stopped at a New York City DWI checkpoint, handcuffed and put in the back of cop car. The car, by the way, had no divider between the back and front seats. And no one’s sure how, but the 18-year-old North Carolinian was able to wiggle his way to the driver’s seat and speed off. Thanks to a GPS tracker, authorities were able to find the car 12-miles away, but it still took 50 cops and search dogs to find Locklear. Now, the teen (who already has a lengthy rap sheet), is facing a whole new batch of charges, including grand larceny and reckless endangerment. The two cops at the DWI checkpoint are also under investigation.

Three people injured after they tried to dress up a dog:

If a dog’s name is Scarface, maybe that’s a hint you shouldn’t play dress up with it? Officials say three people ended up in the hospital after a 52-year-old woman tried to put the pit bull mix in a sweater. The dog attacked the woman, and her husband, who tried to pull the canine off his wife. Then, the couple’s 22-year-old son took everything a step further when he attempted to stop the dog by stabbing it. The trio managed to escape the house and call cops. Animal control officers used a tranquilizer, a bag gun and a stun gun before catching the animal. No charges have been filed at this point, but this family has probably learned its lesson.

ICYMI: Not one, but two Batmans have been caught:

Police in Ormond Beach, Florida have been trying to catch a duo dressing as Batman while holding up stores at gun point. Well, they’ve caught up with the two ‘Caped Crusaders’ and it turns out the criminals are both women. Wateka Thomason and Cassandra Raffa have both been arrested and are now facing charges.

This year’s award categories expanded to include Renewable Energy, Transportation/Complete Streets, and Placemaking/Green Space as a way for 1000 Friends of Iowa to express the fact that smart land use and sustainable communities are more than buildings. All of the nominated projects help advance sustainability across our state by considering site placement, design, water efficiency, energy management, materials and resources used, indoor environmental quality, public use, and long-term benefits.

The Best Development Award winners are selected from a pool of applicants each year and judged by an independent group of jurors. This year’s jurors were Ryan Peterson, President of Impact7G; Liz Christiansen, Director of the Office of Sustainability at the University of Iowa; Jeff Geerts, Special Projects Manager with the Community Development Division of the Iowa Economic Development Authority; Maureen Collins-Williams, an Iowa public sector professional who trains, speaks and consults with 21st century entrepreneurs and innovators; and Jeff Hanson, Community Development Operations Manager of the City of Sioux City.

Founded in 1998, 1000 Friends of Iowa is the only organization in the state focused solely on promoting responsible land use in community, state, and federal development decisions. Its mission is to unite Iowans in efforts to protect farmland and natural areas, revitalize neighborhoods, towns and cities, and improve quality of life for future generations.

Wapello County Man Charged With Burglary & Assault

On December 31^st, 2016 at approximately 7:29 a.m. the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the 5700 blk of Monroe-Wapello Rd reporting that a male had broken into the a residence and was threatening the occupants.

The Deputy arrived at the residence and the suspect ran from the residence and into a large wooded area. The suspect identified as Kelby Klicker surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody at approximately 12:08 p.m.

Klicker was charged with Burglary 2^nd, Assault while participating in a felony, violating a no contact order, 2 cts of Obstruction of an emergency communication and 2 cts of False imprisonment. Klicker is being held in the Wapello County Jail on $15,000.00 cash only bond.

The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wapello County Sheriff Reserves, the Blakesburg Fire Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
