Statesmen Grouped with Faulkner, Taylor in Opening Rounds of Nationals

Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s golf team will bring the most experience in its group as the pairings for the 23rd NAIA National Championships were announced Friday.

#24 nationally-ranked WPU is making its fourth-ever trip to nationals (fourth straight) which will be held Tuesday-Friday, May 23-26 at PGA National Golf Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

For the first two rounds, the Statesmen will be paired with #17 Faulkner (Ala.) and unranked Taylor (Ind.), both of which earned their first berths in program history. The squads will open nationals by teeing off on Hole #1 at 1:45 p.m. (Eastern). The trio will then return to action Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., teeing off on Hole #10.

William Penn, which won last week’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships, owns a current team average of 313.7 (low of 302–tied school record). Elise Warne (So., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) is 38th in GolfStat’s rankings with a 78.29 stroke average (GolfStat average). Courtney Cunningham (Sr., Muskogee, Okla., Computer Science) is next in 53rd (79.05), while Jodi Saito (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii, Education) (69th, 79.87), Helene Larsen (So., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management) (79th, 80.50), Brittany Evans (Fr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management, (83rd, 80.61), and Miranda Keeler (Jr., Plattsmouth, Neb., Communications) (84th, 80.63) are also in GolfStat’s top 100.

The Statesmen won seven tournament titles and are rated #25 in GolfStat.

Faulkner, coached by Brooke Fuller, placed third at the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, but still earned an at-large bid. Three players rank in GolfStat’s top 100, headlined by Hannah Sager in 10th at 76.17. Anna Reid (15th, 76.67) and Hali Lyle (92nd, 80.89) are in the rating as well. The Eagles, who are rated #18 in the GolfStat’s ranking, won three tourney crowns, including twice going under 300 (low of 294–school record).

Taylor, coached by Cameron Andry, are #47 in GolfStat’s rankings and earned an automatic bid to nationals by winning the Crossroads League Tournament crown. Maddie Thomas is pacing TU with an 81.00 scoring average, ranking 95th in the GolfStat rating. The Trojans won four tournaments this year and carded scores of 320 or lower five times with a season-best 299.

It will be the first time William Penn will see either team this season.

EBFHS Concert Band Places 1st at Worlds of Fun Contest

On Sunday, May 7th, The Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Concert Band competed in the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music in Kansas City, Missouri. The EBFHS Band placed 1 st in class 2A competition.

The band also earned a Division I rating for the 2 nd time in EBF Band history at this prestigious contest.

There are 82 students in the concert band this year and they are directed by Joe Overton. Bands from 7 different states compete in this festival. The judges are nationally renowned college band directors and composers. This year, the band had the privilege of performing for Dr. Timothy Rhea from Texas A & M University, Composer and Educator Dr. Johnnie Vinson from Auburn University and Dennis Zeisler from Old Dominion University. On this day in 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young went to No.1 on the US Billboard 200 album chart with Deja Vu. The album was the second by Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the groups first in the quartet configuration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The album featured three Top 40 singles: “Teach Your Children:, “Our House”, and “Woodstock”. The record would go on to be Certified 7x Platinum by the RIAA.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 148 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

E.B.F.H.S. Concert Band Earns Division I Rating

On Saturday, May 6th , the Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont Concert Band, and EBF Rocket Chorale performed at State Large Group Contest at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman. Bands and choirs at the contest were evaluated in several categories by a panel of three judges. The music groups were rated on their performances using a scale of 1 through 5. An I rating indicates a superior performance.

The EBF Concert Band earned an I rating and the choir was one point away from an I rating. The band had the honor of performing for two former Iowa Bandmasters Association presidents and also the president-elect of the Iowa Bandmasters Association.

The EBFHS Concert Band received straight division I ratings and a perfect score from one judge. The choir performance was amazing. Everyone should be very proud of our band and choir.

The EBFHS Band is directed by Joe Overton and the EBFHS Choir is directed by Chris Ellerston.

Kansas Cancels European Tour

After concerns of “safety and security warnings”, Kansas has decided to cancel their upcoming European tour. The tour was scheduled to begin in June to support the band’s latest album, The Prelude Implicit.

The band via BraveWords announced that the tour had been scrapped.“The cancellation is based on safety and security warnings issued by the United States government and various U.S. law enforcement agencies concerning Americans traveling in Europe this summer. Kansas is extremely saddened that the band will not be able to perform for its European fans this year.”

The band will continue their current shows in the U.S., and resume touring the states in August.

2nd Teen Charged With Murder in Davenport Boy’s Slaying

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have arrested a second teen suspected in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy in Davenport.

The 16-year-old boy is charged with murder and robbery in Friday’s slaying of 17-year-old Akeim Hill. Another 17-year-old boy was arrested Saturday and also is charged with murder and robbery. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes.

Police say the two boys met Hill in a parking lot just before noon Friday. A fight broke out, and Hill was shot twice. He was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

On this day in 1982, Asia was #1 on the Billboard US Album Chart with their self-titled debut studio album. The record spent a total of nine weeks at #1 and became the best-selling album of 1982. Asia contains their biggest hit “Heat of the Moment”, which reached #4 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The album was Certified 4x-Platinum in the US by the RIAA and has sold over ten million copies.

Paul McCartney Shows Off His ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Look

Paul McCartney took to his social media Saturday and showed off his look for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

McCartney filmed a cameo for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the Johnny Depp-led saga, which is set for release on May 26.

E Online reported that the former Beatle will play a jail guard in the film.

Of course, McCartney isn’t the first rock star from the British Invasion to show up in the Pirates Saga. Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards has played Jack Sparrow’s (Depp’s) father, Captain Teague, in two of the films.

Man Gets World Record For Extinguishing Matches On His Tongue

Ashrita Furman has 200 world records to his name so now, he has to get a bit more creative. For number 201, the 61-year-old putout matches on his tongue. A lot of matches.

Furman put out 37 matches in just a minute. He had to extinguish one match at a time and was prohibited from using his breath to blow them out.

What’s more, Furman has just bested his own record. He previously extinguished 30 matches in his last attempt.

Woman Tastes Food When She Hears Certain Words

For Kathryn Jackson, conversations can be delicious. The 22-year-old English woman suffers from lexical-gustatory synesthesia, a very rare condition which causes her to taste certain foods when she hears certain words.

“I can taste words when I hear or see them. Sometimes a word sounds like a food item, which can trigger me to taste it,” Jackson explains. “So for example when I hear the name ‘Lola’ I can taste lollipops.” She also tastes carrots when she hears the name “Rory” and stuffing when she hears “impossible.”

But wait, there’s more! Jackson not only tastes the flavor but can also feel a food’s textures and smell the scent.

Topless cleaning service owner arrested for stealing underwear:

Police in Bangor, Maine arrested a woman for stealing underwear from stores around town and discovered she was the woman behind a business called Topless Cleaning. The business offers, you guessed it, cleaning services performed by topless women. Authorities saw the irony in the situation. As Police Sergeant Tim Cotton puts it, the unidentified woman “had stolen garments that would fully cover, support, and contain much of what her business title promised her customers.”

Man disguises himself as a senior citizen during bank robberies:

Abraham Maghen is a bank robber who doesn’t act his age. Instead, the 26-year-old Florida man dressed up as a senior citizen while holding up two banks. Maghen really dove into his character during the second heist, where he allegedly told the teller, “My grandson is sick. I need $40,000 now. Hurry up, he’s going to die.” Police eventually tracked the man down to the house where Maghen was renting a room. He’s due in court this week.

Stolen snack truck found:

Nobody panic, the 16-foot trailer containing thousands of dollars’ worth of Little Debbie snack cakes has been found. The trailer went missing from outside a storage unit in Jonesboro, Arkansas and was discovered later that same night during a traffic stop. To no one’s surprise, it’s hard to be stealth when you’re driving a massive stolen truck. Two female suspects were taken into custody. The craziest part? The snacks were untouched.

Near Misses at Last Chance Meet

Naperville, Ill.–The William Penn track and field teams came up a bit shy of adding any more national qualifiers as the Statesmen competed at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central Thursday and Friday.

Discus qualifier Derek Robinson (Jr., Jenks, Okla., Communications) had a pair of top-10 efforts, including placing fifth in the discus at 155-10 and seventh in the hammer at 164-10. Robinson fell short of adding the hammer to his qualifying list by just 10 inches.

Three-time qualifier (discus, hammer, shot put) Derek Seddon (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) used the meet more as a final practice session, finishing third in the discus at 168-0.

Vashti Nwagbaraocha (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science) tied for sixth in the women’s high jump at 5-2.5, missing the qualifying height by 2.5 inches.

Like Seddon, Tristen Elmore (Fr., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education) was also in practice mode, ending up 12th in the 100-meter dash in 10.96 seconds.
