On this day in 2004 – A Fender Stratocaster that Eric Clapton nicknamed ‘Blackie’ sold at a Christie’s auction for $959,500 (£564,412) in New York, making it the most expensive guitar in the world. The proceeds of the sale went towards Clapton’s Crossroads addiction clinic, which he founded in 1998.

Supertramp Continue 50th Anniversary Celebration With Third Batch Of Vinyl Reissues

Supertramp’s celebration of their 50th anniversary continues with the band releasing Brother Where You Bound and Free as a Bird, the third batch of vinyl reissues from their catalogue.
The records have been remastered at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios.
Brother Where You Bound, released in May 1985, was the band’s first release without Roger Hodgson. It reached No. 20 on the U.K. albums chart and No. 21 on the Billboard 200.
Free as a Bird, which was Supertramp’s ninth studio album, was originally released in October 1987.

On this day in 1985 – Bryan Adams started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Heaven’, his first No.1 single, it made No.35 in the UK. The song had been featured in the film ‘Night In Heaven’.
Jon Bon Jovi Says He’s ‘Fully Recovered’ Following Vocal Cord Surgery

Jon Bon Jovi says he has fully recovered following vocal cord surgery that once threatened his career.
In a new interview with People, Bon Jovi gave fans a health update.
“I’m fully recovered,” he said. “It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith.”
The 64-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist added that he spent years working with vocal coaches and doing vocal exercises to bring his voice back.
He also praised his bandmates, who waited four years for another tour to give the Bon Jovi frontman time to recuperate.
“They never doubted [me] and never looked for work or decided to retire. The sacrifices that each one of them have made to be there for me is on a whole ‘nother level,” Bon Jovi said. “They said, ‘No, we’re with you.’ Every day of every rehearsal they were there with me. My love for them has only deepened.”
The good news comes barely a month ahead of Bon Jovi’s Forever tour, which kicks off with a nine-show Madison Square Garden residency in New York City on July 7.
The legendary rock star said he is looking forward to hitting the road. “I think that this is a rebirth. It is simply about the joy,” he told People.

On this day in 1968 – The Rolling Stones scored their seventh No.1 single when ‘Jumpin Jack Flash’ hit the top of the charts. Keith Richards has stated that he and Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richards’ country house, where they were awoken one morning by the sound of gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. When Jagger asked what the noise was, Richards responded: “Oh, that’s Jack – that’s jumpin’ Jack.”
Chicago Founding Member Walter Parazaider Dead At 81

Walter Parazaider, a founding member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Chicago, has died.
The musician died on Wednesday, June 17, of complications from a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 81.
Parazaider’s death was confirmed by his daughter Felicia Parazaider on Facebook, writing, “My father, my hero, is gone. He went peacefully about 20 minutes ago. There’s no more pain. No more struggle.”
“I’m in shock and disbelief and yet not at all. This was the worst six years. The hardest season of my life. And I’m so grateful that my dad is not suffering anymore,” she added.
Parazaider was part of the original lineup of Chicago, which was formed in its namesake city in 1967. Other original members included Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Danny Seraphine.
They were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Parazaider retired from Chicago in 2017 and announced in 2021 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

On this day in 2010 – John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to The Beatles song ‘A Day In The Life’ sold for $1.2m (£810,000) at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York. The double-sided sheet of paper with notes written in felt marker and blue ink also contained some corrections and other notes penned in red ink.
Alice Cooper Box Set To Collect First Four Solo Albums

Alice Cooper will release a new box set featuring his first four solo albums with a selection of rarities on July 31.
The Studio Albums 1975-1978 is available in 5LP and 5CD configurations exclusively at rhino.com. The albums include Welcome to My Nightmare (1975), Alice Cooper Goes to Hell (1976), Lace and Whiskey (1977), and From the Inside (1978). An album of bonus material adds seven tracks, including single versions of “Welcome To My Nightmare” and “You And Me.”
Cooper’s 1975 platinum-certified solo debut, Welcome to My Nightmare, was the first of eight studio albums and the beginning of a new chapter in a legendary career that has haunted music for half a century.
The gold-certified Alice Cooper Goes to Hell introduced his biggest-selling single, “I Never Cry.”
Cooper shifted gears in 1977 on the platinum-certified Lace and Whiskey, adopting the persona of the bumbling, hard-drinking private investigator Maurice Escargot. It featured the Top 10 ballad “You And Me.”
His fourth album in four years, 1978’s From the Inside is a concept album co-written with Bernie Taupin that draws directly from Cooper’s recent experience in an asylum. Produced by David Foster, the album includes the hit single, “How You Gonna See Me Now,” which peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On this day in 2009 – 60-year-old Billy Joel and his third wife, 27-year-old Katie Lee Joel announced that were splitting up after nearly five years of marriage. Joel’s nine-year union with model Christie Brinkley ended in 1994. His nine-year marriage to Elizabeth Weber, for whom he wrote ‘Just The Way You Are’, ended in 1982. It’s believed that Billy had a prenuptial agreement to protect the millions his many hits have earned.
