The cover art for The Asylum Albums (1976-1980) includes a portion of one of Mitchell’s original paintings.

Accompanying the set is a heartfelt essay penned by Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, a fan of Mitchell’s work.

She writes, “It’s not just the artifact – music and lyrics – that Joni gives us. Her artistry leaves us, ourselves, changed. She has shifted things around inside us. And that’s how artists change the world.”

The release of The Asylum Albums (1976-1980) sets the stage for Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 4, the next installment in the archival series dedicated to exploring Mitchell’s career through unreleased studio and live recordings. More details will be announced later this year.

Mitchell will perform at the Hollywood Bowl on October 19 and 20 for two highly anticipated sold-out shows.

Alternate Version Of David Bowie’s ‘Lady Stardust’ Released From Upcoming Box Set

Parlophone Records has released an alternate version of David Bowie’s “Lady Stardust” from an upcoming Box Set.

David Bowie Rock ‘N’ Roll Star!, a 5CD and 1 Blu-Ray Audio set, is scheduled for release on June 14. It explores Bowie’s journey through the creation of Ziggy Stardust, and the recording of the iconic The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album.

The hitherto unknown “Lady Stardust (Alternative Version – Take 1)” took its original producer by surprise.

Producer Ken Scott recalls, “This was a shock when I first heard it. I pulled up the faders and suddenly, what the hell? I had no recollection of it being like that originally, but I guess it was just a guide vocal. But it sounds great, is really interesting and brings a totally different feeling to the song.”

The band line-up for “Lady Stardust (Alternative Version – Take 1)” is Bowie on vocals, Mick Ronson on piano, Trevor Bolder on bass and Woody Woodmansey on drums.

Scott singles out Ronson for praise, saying, “Ronno on piano is very good indeed. The Trident Studio piano was just amazing, a Bechstein grand from around 1850 and I think the hammers had been treated with varnish or something – it was the best rock and roll piano in the whole world.”

Other unreleased highlights on Rock ‘N’ Roll Star! include an unheard version of the deep-cut classic “Shadow Man” and an up-tempo take on The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” which Bowie would later slow down and cover for the Pin-Ups album.

Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ Named Best-Selling Vinyl Album Of The 21st Century in the UK

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours has been named the best-selling vinyl album of the 21st century, from records that were released between 1970 and 1999.

Despite never sending one of its timeless tracks to No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart, Rumours is one of the most successful and enduring LPs ever released in the U.K. – it’s spent a total of 1,042 weeks inside the Official Albums Chart since its release in 1977.

Fleetwood Mac’s only U.K. No. 1 single remains 1968’s Albatross.

This week, Rumours is back inside the Top 10 of the Official Albums Chart, solidifying its status as one of the most popular records with the British public of all time.

According to Official Charts Company data, Rumours has logged 280,000 vinyl sales since the beginning of the new millennium.

Coming in at No. 2 is Pink Floyd’s 1973 magnum opus Dark Side of the Moon, considered to be one of the greatest rock albums ever made. Dark Side of the Moon still ranks as one of the Top 10 best-selling albums of all time in the U.K..

Completing the Top 5 are Nirvana’s generation-defining second album Nevermind (No. 3), Oasis’s best-selling album in the U.K., (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (No. 4) and Queen’s Greatest Hits (No. 5), which remains the best-selling album of all time in the UK.
