On this day in 1980 – Ringo Starr and his future wife actress Barbara Bach were involved in a car crash less than half a mile from where Marc Bolan was killed. The car was a write-off but Starr and Bach were not seriously injured. At around 60 mph, the Mercedes skidded for fifty yards and collided head-on with two lampposts. Despite a minor leg injury, Starr managed to pull Bach from the wreckage. The near-death experience drew the couple closer, and they decided they would never spend more than a few days apart. Starr famously had his wrecked luxury car crushed into a compact cube and turned into a coffee table.
