The Oskaloosa baseball team had one more chance to beat Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday night and due to a clutch hit from a senior and clutch pitching from two underclassmen, the Indians got the job done in a 7-3 victory.
DCG would score first on a three-run home run from junior catcher Brandon Risius in the top of the second inning. The hit was the third in a row off of sophomore starting pitcher Rian Yates, but Yates wouldn’t allow another base knock for the rest of his five innings of work.
While Yates settled in, the Osky offense came alive in the bottom of the third, plating three runs. Blake VanVeldhuizen had a two-run double and Nick Harrington hit an RBI fielder’s choice to knot up the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior Ethan Arnold came up with runners on the corners and just one out. Although he’s had some struggles, that wasn’t the case on this night, as Arnold blasted a three-run homer over the centerfield wall to give Osky a 6-3 lead. That’s his second home run of the season.
Osky would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 7-3. Freshman Noah VanVeldhuizen would pitch the last two innings and would not allow a run to finish the job.
With the win, Osky moves to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in Little Hawkeye Conference play, while DCG is now 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the LHC.
Oskaloosa Baseball is back in action Tuesday night in a non-conference single varsity game against Knoxville at home. First pitch for the varsity team is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
