Prince’s estate has released Calabama, a four-track digital EP featuring alternate versions of recordings from the late musician’s archive.
Available via NPG Records, the release includes the album version of “Calabama,” “Calabama (Vault Raw)” and two previously unreleased recordings, “Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 1)” and “Prince And The Band (Vault Raw 2).” The Calabama EP is available here.
The EP follows Timeless, a posthumous album released August 28 featuring 10 previously unreleased songs recorded between 1977 and 2016.
The new release allows listeners to compare the original “Calabama” recording with the Timeless version, which features additional horn arrangements recorded after Prince’s death by Greg Boyer, Adrian Crutchfield and Lynn Grissett.
The estate also included two raw versions of “Prince And The Band” to offer further insight into Prince’s use of live horn sections and his creative process.
“Calabama” was recorded at Paisley Park on January 21, 2003, with drummer John Blackwell. The two “Prince And The Band” recordings feature different lineups of musicians.
