OSKALOOSA — Laila Smith (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Elementary Education) was lauded by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the NAIA all-region teams were announced recently.
Smith was named to the second team in Region VI (two teams each in the six regions, 147 total players). The award is her first from the NFCA.
The junior helped William Penn to a 27-21 record (18-10 Heart) and the No. 5 seed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship earlier this month.
Smith concluded her year with a .380 batting average (57-for-150) that included 13 doubles, two triples, and 12 home runs. She tallied 55 RBIs and scored 28 times, while posting a .733 slugging percentage and a .436 on-base clip that featured 16 walks and two hit-by-pitches.
The junior, who was chosen as a catcher, also stole four bases. She recorded 17 multi-hit games and had a season-best three hits on five occasions.
