Bruce Springsteen is letting his passionate views be heard on a new track with his collaborator and longtime friend Joe Grushecky. The new track, entitled “That’s What Makes Us Great”, is an anti-Trump song that premiered on Springsteen’s Sirius XM station, E Stree Radio.
Once President Trump took office in January, Grushecky began writing the tune. He told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “[Trump] lost me the moment he started making fun of special needs people. How could a person like that be president of the United States?,” asked Grushecky, who has long worked with special needs children, calling Trump’s actions “appalling.”
Grushecky added that once he sent the song to Springsteen, he agreed to sing on it and “gave it the Bruce treatment”.
Springsteen proclaimed the E Street Band and himself were the “new American resistance” in January during the Women’s March.
In 2016, he told Rolling Stone that “the republic is under siege by a moron.” “That’s What Makes Us Great” targets various aspects of the Trump administration, including immigration and alternative facts. At one point, Springsteen sings, “Don’t tell me a lie / And sell it as a fact / I’ve been down that road before / And I ain’t goin’ back.”
