Smith, Huff Claim Both Heart POW Honors

OSKALOOSA — Laila Smith (So., Olympia, Wash., Elementary Education) and Chelsey Huff (Sr., Douds, Iowa, Exercise Science) performed at a high level during William Penn’s spring break trip, and for their efforts they won Heart of America Athletic Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards Monday, presented by Musco.

Smith won her second career Player laurel (first this year), while Huff earned her third weekly Pitcher accolade (all three have come this season).  The duo helped the Statesmen to a 6-2 record last week.

Smith was selected because of her .429 batting average (12-for-28) that included two doubles, three home runs, 15 RBIs, and eight runs scored.  She owned an .821 slugging percentage, and along with four walks, she posted a .500 on-base mark.

The sophomore tallied six multi-hit games with four coming against Nelson (Ariz.) last Friday.  After a slow start with no RBIs through her first three contests, Smith tallied at least two RBIs in each of her final five matchups (high of four twice).  She scored in seven of her eight games, and got on base in all eight contests.

For the year, Smith is hitting .373 (28-for-75) with eight doubles, five home runs, 26 RBIs, and 14 runs scored.  She has a .680 slugging percentage and a .427 on-base clip (7 walks).

Over the span of five appearances in the circle (17 1/3 innings), Huff went 1-0 (one save) with a 0.81 Earned Run Average.  The senior struck out 16 batters against only two walks, while opponents hit just .224 against her.

Huff did not allow a run in four of her outings, and managed at least one strikeout in all five games with a high of seven against Dickinson State last Thursday.

For the year, Huff is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA.  In 57 2/3 innings of work, she has struck out 72 and walked 16, while opponents have hit just .247 against her.  The senior also has one save to her credit.

William Penn has now claimed six weekly awards this season.
