Jimi Hendrix’s family find themselves once again fighting for the rights to his name. On March 16th, Hendrix’s estate filed suit against Jimi’s brother Leon, and Andrew Pitsicalis, who have been using the Jimi Hendrix trademark and copyright they don’t own.

Experience Hendrix, LLC and Authentic Hendrix, LLC released a press release that states Leon and Pitscicalis’ Purple Haze Properties, LLC, ” have attempted to hijack trademarks and copyrights for their own personal gain.” They’ve done this “through the creation, development, manufacturing, promotion, advertising and sale of cannabis, edibles, food, wine, alcohol, ‘medicines,’ electronic products and other goods.”

Leon Hendrix and/or Pitsicalis have been going back and forth in lawsuits with the Hendrix Estate since 2004 when a judge shut Lion out of the business. The duo has lost many other court cases stemming from various attempts to create Jimi Hendrix-themed merchandise. The most recent case being in 2016 when Leon released a Purple Haze Liqueur using the word “Jimi” and a replication of Jimi’s signature on its bottle.

Hendrix’s father, Al was in charge of the estate from 1995 until his death in 2002. The company estate is now run by Jimi’s adopted sister, Janie.
