MOORE'S HISTORIC OUTPUT, BRUNS' FOURTH QUARTER SURGE LEADS SAVAGES TO SWEEP

Moore’s Historic Output, Bruns’ Fourth Quarter Surge Leads Savages to Sweep

By Cory Houser

Seniors helped lead the way in big spots for Sigourney’s basketball teams on Tuesday night as they wound up with a sweep of Keota, in games heard live on KMZN. It was a night that senior Josephine Moore couldn’t do anything wrong, as she and the lady Savages walloped the Eagles, 68–44. Sigourney raced out to a 20–14 lead after the first eight minutes, and a 37–19 advantage at halftime. Keota did get within five points with a big third-quarter push, but Sigourney dug their heels in and Moore put the game on her shoulders to help the team coast the rest of the way. Josephine Moore outscored the Eagles in the first half with 22 points, and almost outscored them for the game, finishing with a 41-point effort (including going 11-for-11 from the free throw line) in the win. Freshman Brynn Clarahan added 17 more as the Savage ladies improved to 10–4 on the season.

The boys’ game was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately Sigourney wound up on top, 62-55. The game was tied at 22 after two quarters, and the Savages held a slim one-point lead at the end of three. Senior Isaac Bruns was scoreless until the fourth quarter, when he came up with big buckets at big moments to help Sigourney get out to an 11-point lead with 2:40 left. Keota implemented a full-court press and quickly got back in the game, getting as close as three with a little over a minute to go. Bruns, Solon Yates, and John Berg put a halt to any comeback from the Eagles with timely shots and free throws. Berg had a team-high 19 points, Yates added 17, Bruns scored 13 (all in the fourth quarter), and Ike Molyneux dumped in 10 more, as the Savage boys improved to 10–4 on the year. They will join the girls team for another doubleheader on Thursday when they travel to WACO. You can hear both games live on KMZN and RadioKMZN.com with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 and the girls’ game tipping off at 6:00.
