North Mahaska Boys go 5-0 at BGM Duals; Girls Finish 4th

BROOKLYN – North Mahaska took to the mats for the second day in a row and added five more dual wins to their slate at the BGM Duals Friday. North Mahaska defeated Gilbert 52-17; Des Moines North-Hoover 69-9; North Scott 47-35; BGM 54-30 and Tipton 44-30.

Five Warhawks were a perfect 5-0 on the day. Cooper Sampson at 106 had a pair of pins, Aydan Groom had four pins at 132; Luke Reed had three pins at 138, and Ryan Groom won at 144 with three pins. Chance Angle at 190 recorded four pins.

Logan VanZee at 113 was 4-1 as was Nolan Tum at 285. Each recorded two pins.

In the opening match with Gilbert, North Mahaska won 10 of the 13 contested matches. NM recorded four pins and four technical falls and two major decisions. Sampson pinned Noah Hinderaker in 47 seconds, Gage Ries pinned Philip Chitty in 1:38, Angle pinned John Beardsley in 1:26 and Tum pinned Easton Crawford in 1:29.

Tech falls were recorded by VanZee over Merek Ritland 17-1; A. Groom over Layden Verville 16-0; Max Reed over Holden Boshart 16-1, and Hunter Brisel over Elijah Sanford 17-1. L. Reed at 138 and R. Groom earned major decisions over Kody Koerner and Braeden Nees respectively.

North Mahaska dominated Des Moines with 10 pins. VanZee opened with a pin of Andres Martinez-Cruz in 2:51. Trevin Hunolt pinned Jian Estrada in 3:05 at 126. A. Groom pinned Nichaud Lewis-Walker in 53 seconds; L. Reed pinned Papi Masudi in 4 minutes at 138; R. Groom pinned Ashton Harris in 2:52; and Hunter Wernli pinned Javier Canesco-Garcia in 1:17.

Chris Long earned a fall over Khaing Zan at 157 in 3:31 followed by Angle’s pin of Courage Lowah in 3:06. Tum pinned Gavin Stone in 46 seconds. Sampson pinned Adrian Antonio Lopez in 27 seconds.

The North Scott match was more competitive. The Warhawks posted five wins by pin and a tech fall to help propel themselves to the win. A. Groom, L. Reed and R. Groom posted three consecutive pins. Aydan pinned Eric Bachtel in 1:01; Reed beat Tommy Schlichting in 1:35; and Ryan pinned Tanner Yates in 1:28.

The other two pins came by Angle over Vincent Hugaert in 2:34 and VanZee pinned Andrew Klindt in 4:58. Ries scored a tech fall over Aaron Bergfeld 15-0.

BGM, a South Iowa Cedar League foe, ceded seven matches by forfeit to the Warhawks. A. Groom and Ries recorded the lone pins in the match. Groom pinned Chase Kriegel in 42 seconds and Ries took Nathan Findlay in 1:57.

In the final match with Tipton, NM opened with three pins to take early control of the match. A. Groom pinned Zadok Barber in 1:21 then L. Reed pinned Everett Giese in 1:07. R. Groom took just 15 seconds to dispose of Brody Johnson. The other pin came by Angle in 46 seconds over Abel Dlouhy.

Sampson scored a tech fall over Ryder Fog, 18-2, and VanZee had a major decision, 12-2, over Wesley Fogg.

North Mahaska will host Knoxville and BGM on Thursday then head to Truro, I-35 on Saturday.

Girls

Eight North Mahaska wrestlers took to the mats at BGM Friday in preparation for the final run to state qualification. The Warhawk girls crowned two champions and all eight placed third or better.

Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center won the meet with 148 points and Gilbert was second with 139 followed by Lisbon with 102 and North Mahaska had 100 in the eight-team meet.

Kaylia Shipman (34-10) at 115 pounds and Macie Little (37-2) at 125 took the top spots in their respective weight classes. Addison Terpstra (100) and Lilly Briggs (110) placed second.

Shipman won all four of her matches by fall. She pinned Alyssa Lovell of Tipton in 5 minutes 14 seconds in the first round. Lisbon’s Jordyn Jarchow fell in 41 seconds. Shipman pinned Tipton’s Laylah Perrin in 1:36 and finished the night pinning Gilbert’s Emma Britcher in 1:56.

Little also pinned all five of her opponents. Chacey Lange of Tipton went down in 47 seconds followed by Allie Blankenship of BGM in 1:22. Jocelyn Freed of APGC fell in 1:41 and Gilbert’s Makenna Springer fell in 4:52. Little’s final match was a pin of Ceanna White of BCLUW-SH in 3:54.

There were three competitors in Terpstra’s 100-pound class. She pinned familiar foe Gracen MacCready of Tri-County in 1:25 then took 13 seconds to pin Lisbon’s Ann Marie Morgan. In the final match Terpstra (23-12) lost by fall to Koda Fogg in 42 seconds. 

At 105, Briggs (22-26) pinned Nadia Peach of Tipton in 1:56 then faced NM teammate Ruby Wallerich (8-19) and won in 3:15. In the final match, Briggs lost to Amiah Lint of BGM in 4:15.

Wallerich lost her opener to Lint then pinned Peach in 1:39 to earn third. Marissa Little (14-16) pinned Kalya Moorman at 155 to take third and Amara Edwards-Hinton (7-27) was third at 170.
