MARENGO – Iowa Valley became the latest victim to the league leading North Mahaska Warhawks Friday. The Tigers fell to No. 2 ranked North Mahaska 68-23 in South Iowa Cedar League play. NM improves to 10-1 overall and 7-0 in league play.
The Tigers kept the game close in the first quarter with NM leading 15-10. North Mahaska’s relentless defense held Iowa Valley to five points in the second quarter and eight in the third period. The Tigers failed to score in the final period.
Three starters and a reserve scored in double figures for North Mahaska. Regan Grewe led with 12 and Breckyn Schilling scored 11. Sydney Andersen and reserve Libby Hargis each chipped in 10. Aly Steil added eight.
North Mahaska forced 26 turnovers including 18 steals. The Warhawks turned the ball over just four times. Schilling and Grewe led in steals with six and four respectively. Kayla Readshaw doled out six assists and Andersen had five rebounds. Nataliya Linder pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Warhawks, six of them on the defensive end.
NM shot 44.4 percent from the field but was just 7-for-16 at the foul line. Iowa Valley was limited to 22.5 percent from the floor and was 3-of-6 at the line.
Lydie Kriegel led Iowa Valley in scoring with 17 points and eight rebounds. Iowa Valley outrebounded the Warhawks 29-28.
North Mahaska hosts Baxter on Monday in nonconference play then heads to Keota Tuesday. They will finish the first run through the conference schedule when they host English Valleys on Friday.
Boys Game
North Mahaska and Iowa Valley tangled in a South Iowa Cedar League tussle that saw each team make a run at the other. NM won the first and third quarters, saw Iowa Valley tie with them in the second and held off a Tiger rally in the fourth to win 76-64 and remain undefeated in league play.
The Iowa Valley duo of Caleb Haack and Cole Long, who scored 24 and 21 points respectively, were slightly overmatched by five Warhawks who shared the ball. It was also a battle on the boards with Iowa Valley winning 36-31.
“It was a game of runs,” said North Mahaska coach Kevin Kelderman. “We were up 15 twice and they cut it back and we won by 12.”
Gabe Hora led North Mahaska with 19 points, Lucas Nunnikhoven had 17 and Jaxon VanDerVeer added 12. Asher DeBoef finished with nine and Adrian Smith out in seven. DeBoef grabbed 10 rebounds and passed out eight assists. Smith and Trenton DeBruin pulled down five rebounds.
North Mahaska moves to 10-1 on the season and 8-0 in league play.
