NEW SHARON — Four North Mahaska baseball players picked up honors from the South Iowa Cedar League coaches earlier this month. The Warhawks had a first team pick, second team selection and two honorable mentions.
Junior Jack Kelderman was selected to the first team as a utility player. He was the Warhawks’ top pitcher and also played middle infield. He was listed in the top five of the SICL according to Bound.
Kelderman led the SICL in innings pitched at 72.2 and second in mound starts with 11. He was tied with senior teammate Nolan Andersen with 13 mound appearances. Kelderman was fifth in the league for strikeouts with 75.
Junior Lucas Nunnikhoven was honored with a second team selection with his play in the outfield. He had several dives for outs, which do not show up on stat sheets. He was ninth in stolen bases with 20 offensively and had a .974 defensive average with one error on the season.
Seniors Andersen and Nate Sampson received honorable mention this season. Andersen spent time on the mound and at first base. He had the distinction of leading the league in reaching base by being hit by pitch. That occurred 10 times. He was third in the SICL in sacrifice flys with three. On the mound, as mentioned before, he was tied with Kelderman in mound appearances with 13. He was third in saves with two.
Sampson was first in the league assists with 52. He was tied for 13th in stolen bases with 19. He had a fielding percentage of .929 with six errors on the season. Sampson also saw some time as pitcher.
North Mahaska finished fifth in the league race with an 8-7 mark. The team reached the Class 1A district final before falling to No. 5 Lynnville-Sully.
North Mahaska’s softball team collected several honors from the South Iowa Cedar League coaches. Regan Grewe earned a first team nod while Olivia Ridgeway, Jocelyn Pinkerton, Kaylia Shipman, and Kayla Readshaw garnered second team honors. Madeline Doonan and Kylie Van Weelden received honorable mention.
Grewe was listed in 14 categories of offense and defense according to Bound statistics. She led the league in slugging percentage at 1.030 and tied for first in sacrifice flies with three. From the pitching circle, she was second in walks with eight and hit two batters.
Grewe was third in batting average at .463 with nine homeruns and 36 RBI. She was third in on base percentage at .524. She was third in hits allowed (48) and earned runs allowed (21).
She was fourth in runs scored (32), fourth in triples (3) and total bases (69).
Ridgeway earned second team as an infielder. She was second in the SICL in assist with 48. She was also a scary force on the base paths tying for third in stolen bases with 21.
Pinkerton earned her spot from the pitching circle. She was fifth in starts at 18 and second in hit batters with two.
Readshaw earned a spot as a utility player. She was a solid middle infielder for the Warhawks this season. She was strong at the plate placing third in triples with four. She led the league in steals with 32.
When it came to stealing bases against SICL opponents, the Warhawks, who finished fifth with an 8-7 mark, stole 69 bases. Readshaw, Ridgeway and Shipman held three of the top five spots in the stats.
Shipman was named to second team as an outfielder, but it was her offense that helped propel her onto the team. She tied for the second in runs scored with 34, She was fifth in stolen bases with 6 and fifth in double with 11.
Honorable mention went to Doonan, who was tied for fourth in triples with three and runs scored with 31. Van Weelden had a strong season behind the plate tying for second in errors with two and fourth in thrown out stealing 5.
North Mahaska reached the regional quarterfinal where they fell to eventual state qualifier Southeast Warren.
