Petersen Selected by Nationals in 8th Round of MLB Draft

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa junior Sam Petersen was selected by the Washington Nationals on Monday in the 8th Round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft. Petersen was the 230th pick overall.

Petersen is the 31st player drafted under head coach Rick Heller.

The Huxley, Iowa, native hit .333 in 33 games for the Hawkeyes this season. Petersen tallied 42 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, and five home runs. He plated 27 RBIs and was 17 of 18 on stolen base attempts.

Petersen appeared in 133 career games for Iowa with a .305 batting average. He recorded 134 hits, scored 123 runs, hit 27 doubles and had 22 home runs. Petersen had 107 RBIs and 40 stolen bases.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2024 season with a 31-23 overall record. Iowa finished fourth in the Big Ten regular season standings and made its ninth straight Big Ten Tournament appearance.
