Girls Game
NEW SHARON – No. 7 in Class 2A North Mahaska held on for a 41-39 win over 14th-ranked in Class 1A Lynnville-Sully. Add in that the two schools are South Iowa Cedar League Conference rivals and you have the making of an instant classic.
North Mahaska won the first half, and the visiting Hawks won the second, but NM made just enough shots to secure the victory.
North Mahaska jumped out to an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The defense stiffened and limited Lynnville-Sully to just two points in the second period to lead 20-10 at halftime. The differential would ultimately be enough on a night of low point production.
North Mahaska shot just 26.9 percent from the field and hit 11-of-21 free throws. They collected 13 steals but turned the ball over 14 times to the Hawks’ defense.
Breckyn Schilling was the lone Warhawk in double figures scoring. She scored 10 points. She also blocked two shots. Regan Grewe scored eight points with five steals and two assists. Kayla Readshaw had seven points with three steals. Sydney Andersen and Libby Hargis each scored six points.
North Mahaska will play five games over the next 12 days to complete the pre-holiday season including back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday of next week. The Warhawks host PCM Monday in a nonconference tilt before heading to Colfax-Mingo Tuesday. They will close out the week hosting Moravia in another nonconference game. They will close out December at Belle Plaine and Sigourney.
Boys Game
North Mahaska and Lynnville-Sully had another one of those classic battles on the basketball court Friday. The Hawks of Lynnville-Sully edged North Mahaska 71-69 in overtime to remain undefeated on the season.
The game was close throughout with Lynnville-Sully leading 23-22 at halftime. North Mahaska had a strong third quarter and led 43-39 entering the final frame of regulation. L-S rallied to tie the game then outscored the Warhawks 12-10 in the extra period.
The two teams were nearly identical in most every statistical category. North Mahaska had the best field goal percentage shooting 45.5 percent while L-S shot 35.6. The Hawks made one more 3-pointer than North Mahaska (3-2). NM shot 10-for-18 free throws while L-S went 9-of-20. L-S held the rebounding edge 44-39 and turned the ball over 11 times. North Mahaska had 18 turnovers.
Junior Gabe Hora led North Mahaska in scoring with 25 points. Junior Asher DeBoef scored a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Nolan Andersen scored nine points, Lucas Nunnikhoven had six and Jack Kelderman had five.
Lynnville-Sully’s Mitchell Miller also scored 25 points in the contest. Lucas Sleck scored 10 and Klayton Van Dyke and Hendrick Lowry each added nine.
North Mahaska will host PCM Monday then travel to Colfax-Mingo Tuesday. They will host Tri-County on Friday.
