COLFAX – North Mahaska found the going tough Wednesday when they faced the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks in a baseball-softball doubleheader. The CM softball team won 5-0 while the baseball team won 11-8.
North Mahaska was limited to two hits, singles by Regan Grewe and Madeline Doonan. The Warhawks walked five times and was hit by pitch twice but could not score the runs.
CM scored two runs in each of the second and third innings then added an insurance tally in the fifth.
Grewe took the loss from the circle allowing four runs on four hits, and a walk. She struck out one. Olivia Ridgeway tossed 2 1/3 innings giving up a run on one hot and five walks.
In the boys’ contest, Colfax-Mingo rallied from a 5-0 deficit to score the South Iowa Cedar League victory. North Mahaska scored four runs right out of the box and added another in the top of the third. The host Tigerhawks then scored a run and NM answered with three more in the top of the fourth for an 8-1 advantage.
CM cut the lead with four in the bottom of the fourth to trail 8-5. NM could not add anymore but the Tigerhawks tallied six in the sixth inning.
North Mahaska’s downfall was the issuance of 12 bases on balls and a hit batsman. Nolan Andersen started and tossed four innings allowing five runs on four hits with four walks, a hit batsman and four strikeouts. Drake Hall and Nate Sampson each tossed an inning with each walking four batters.
Andersen led the team in batting with a homerun and three RBI. Sampson and Ben Johannes each hit a single and a double to drive in a run.
Both North Mahaska teams will be back in action Friday when they host Iowa Valley.
