NEW SHARON – North Mahaska got the bats rattling when they needed and forced BGM into errors to hold off the prowling Bears 3-1 in South Iowa Cedar League play. BGM took the early lead in the top of third inning then NM scored two in the third and another in the fourth to secure the win.
While NM coach Ashley Schroeder was pleased with the outcome, she said her team left too many runs on base and especially in scoring position.
“We did what we needed to do to win, but we need to get better at the plate,” said Schroeder. We left too many runners in scoring position.
“Our defense was solid. We fielded our positions up and down the lineup.”
BGM was limited to three hits by sophomore hurler Regan Grewe. The defense behind her played well with no errors recorded. Four of BGM’s errors resulted in runners reaching base. That added to a couple stolen bases allowed NM to hold on for the win. On the downside, NM stranded six runners on base. They left two on base twice, four runners were left at third or second.
Grewe struck out three and walked four while yielding just three hits.
Olivia Ridgeway, Madeline Doonan, and Cali Sampson hit singles. Kayla Readshaw had the lone NM extra base hit with a double. Jalayna Shipley and Ridgeway each recorded a stolen base.
North Mahaska improves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League. They played at Colfax-Mingo Wednesday and will host Iowa Valley on Friday. They will conclude the busy week with games at the Oskaloosa tournament Saturday. They will face Oskaloosa and Newton.
BGM falls to 2-3 and 1-3.
