NEW SHARON – Thursday was a great night for North Mahaska tracksters. Temperatures were moderate and winds relatively calm as teams from eight schools competed in the Steve Ehret Relays hosted by North Mahaska.
The North Mahaska boys broke two meet records and edged Pella Christian by 2.5 points to win 148-146.5. Iowa Valley ran third with 109.5. North Mahaska girls placed second behind Pella Christian 124.5-123. Colfax-Mingo was in the chase with 121 points.
North Mahaska powered their way to the crown winning six events and set two meet marks in the distance relays. The 3,200-meter relay team of Lane Harmon, Brayden Veiseth, Ben Yang and Nate Sampson powered the baton around the track in 8 minutes 55 seconds to break a five year mark of 9:07.42 set by Pella Christian in 2018.
North Mahaska followed that win up with a record in the distance medley in 3:58.60, that mark was also set by Pella Christian, in 2019. PC ran in 3:59.19 that year. Hunter Wernli, Gage Ries, Kaleb Stout and Harmon carried the baton.
North Mahaska boys also added a win in the 3,200 meters in 11:08.8 by Asher DeBoef. Andy Knockel won the 200 in 23.7 and Veiseth took the 1,600 in 5:04.50. Teammate Ben Yang ran sixth in the event in 5:19.70.
Sampson and Yang nabbed a one-three finish in the 800 meters. Sampson finished in 2:16.60 while Yang clocked a 2:20.70.
Lucas Nunnikhoven took second in the long jump with a leap of 18-feet 5-inches. Kaleb Stout took fifth with a jump of 16-8. Pella Christian’s Luke Nikkel won with a jump of 20-2.75. Nunnikhoven was runnerup in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.1 and Clay Thompson tied for seventh.
Gage VandeVoort took second in the discus with a throw of 129-1.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Max Reed, Thompson, Charlie Goemaat and Nunnikhoven was third in 1:12.50.
North Mahaska’s girls picked up three firsts and four seconds and double in three events. Emmerson Jedlicka picked up the first win of the day with a 12:28.10 time in the 3,000. She would add a runnerup finish in the 1,500 in 5:50.8.
The other wins came in the field events. Sydney Andersen won the shot with a put of 34-3. Hannah Wernli and Breckyn Schilling added a first and third finish in the long jump. Wernli had a leap of 15-0 feet while Schilling jumped 14-4.
Aly Steil was the runnerup in the 800 meters in 2:46.50. Kayla Readshaw and Steil took second and fifth in the 400. Readshaw ran 1:07.5 while Steil clocked a 1:10.7.
Ally Livezey, Regan Grewe, Readshaw and Alivia Schock earned second in the sprint medley in 2:06.20.
Ava Huffman was third in the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and Marissa Little took third in the discus with a throw of 83-11. Wernli and Schilling went 3-5 in the 100 hurdles. Wernli ran 17.38 while Schilling finished in 18.72.
North Mahaska girls run at Iowa Valley Monday while the boys go to Iowa Valley on Tuesday.
