NEW SHARON — North Mahaska’s golf team teed off for its first competition Monday hosting Lynnville-Sully and Montezuma. Battling a strong, cold wind, three golfers managed to shoot a 38. Montezuma had two of them and finished with a 161. North Mahaska was second with a 171 and L-S shot 183.
“It was a good day with only five of our golfers with competition experience,” said NM coach Eric Stout. “That wind was tough, but we had some good scores.”
Nash Smith led North Mahaska’s charge with a 38 hitting seven pars and two bogies. His effort earned him the runnerup medal on the card back. Montezuma’s Cruz DeJong was medalist with a 38. His teammate Max Anderson also shot 38.
It was looking like a good day for golf until the winds picked up about 45 minutes before the boys teed off. Although the wind caused problems it was which golfers could maintain their focus.
Brock Walkup posted a 41 followed by Jaxon Vanderveer with a 44 and Nolan Andersen with a 48. Other varsity scores included Jack Kelderman with a 49 and Trace Goemaat with a 59.
Junior varsity golfers playing were Carter Lake with a 49, Ben Johannes with a 58, Jeremiah Ashman 68 and Cole Garman 71.
North Mahaska will go to Keota Thursday.
