DALLAS, TX — Jayson Miner (Sr., Silvis, Ill., Business Management) has extended his individual collegiate playing career to one final tournament after qualifying for nationals at the USBC Singles Sectionals Friday.
Miner placed second out of 177 total competitors in the Dallas Sectional, tallying 1,359 pins in six games. He managed five games in the 200s with a high round of 265.
The senior becomes the fifth Statesmen in school history to qualify for the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships. It is also the third year in a row that William Penn has a national qualifier. Nationals begins April 18 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The top five individuals from Dallas qualified with Vincent Luong of Fresno State (Calif.) topping the standings with 1,395 pins.
Former Statesmen national qualifier Aleksander Kostric (Grad., Koper, Slovenia, Master’s of Sports Management) was next for William Penn, placing 10th with 1,271 pins.
Conor Fetherston (Fr., Dublin, Ireland), with 1,162 pins, Bryce Keykal (So., Princeton, Minn., Education), with 1,120 pins, and Jared Smith (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting), with 1,061 pins, also eclipsed the 1,000-pin mark for the day.
Jake Cook (Sr., Keokuk, Iowa, Physical Education) (999) and Coleton Jacobson (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Exercise Science) (977) also battled in the Lonestar State.
Several reserve players, who did not make the trek to Dallas, also competed in a sectional, doing so in the Addison event. Justen Dostal (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) headlined the crew with 1,120 pins.
Spencer Fleming (So., Greensboro, N.C., Business Management) was the next-best roller with 1,095 pins, while Connor Rissi (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Undecided) had 1,070 pins to his credit. Garraty Richmond (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Digital Communication) also finished above 1,000 pins (1,024), while Blaise Hubler (Jr., Columbia, Iowa, Psychology) (978) and Caleb Sterbenz (Jr., West Liberty, Iowa, Applied Computer Science) (876) were on the lanes as well.
